I still use FCP because I bought it 8 or 9 years ago and have received every software update since for free. In the software world that’s the best $300 investment I’ve made. The Option+T keyboard shortcut to apply a cross fade between clips is a fantastic time saver.

Recently found your channel through the DJI camera reviews, but this was just perfect timing as I'd been reconsidering my Premiere Pro subscription after a year. It's quite unnerving to see that the subscription for a year is almost as much as a FCP license. So, I'll likely trial it soon, thanks for that friendly nudge! I also love your video style and aesthetic so the fact that you can make GoPro footage look as good as you do with the tools you recommended is very inspiring. - Angel

Ah thank you 😊 And yeah, it’s well worth giving the trial a go as you get something like 90 days which gives you a really decent amount of time to figure out if you like it or not. CineMatch and FilmConvert Nitrate are awesome. It would take me twice as long to correct and grade footage without them, especially the GoPro footage because I really don’t like that over-saturated crispy look, but grading the Flat footage freehand is a bit of a nightmare without those plugins, so they’re a massive lifesaver.

I gave up on Premiere two years ago because of the same issues with instability and just how slow it’s gotten. I personally use DaVinci Resolve and absolutely love it, but Final Cut is a great editor too, and the magnetic timeline is its best feature. I’d really love to see Resolve have a magnetic timeline. However, since I do some advanced compositing and effects I need Resolve. I know a lot of people will do advanced compositing in After Effects and import their renders into Final Cut. What I think would really put Final Cut on a competitive advantage is if they had tabbed workflows and would marry Motion and FCP into one app. In Resolve there’s an edit page, a page dedicated to compositing called Fusion, and a page dedicated to rendering called the deliver page. It’s all-in-one application so there’s no need for round-tripping. I know Final Cut has come a long way over the years and would be my next editor of choice if it weren’t for Resolve.
Very useful video if you're in that point of your life when you feel the need to forget about premiere and move on... you yt channel is awesome! 👏

Hi Tamara. I'm relatively new to editing and don't do it that often but have been using Premier and am pretty frustrated with it. Just wondering, if after a few months since this video you still rate FCP?
@TamaraGabrielUK
10 ай бұрын
Hey. Yeah, 100%. I love FCPX.
15 or more years ago, I used a “cut down” version of Final Cut Pro - “Final Cut Express” on a not very powerful MAC - and it worked seamlessly. I’m going to purchase, soon, Final Cut Pro - I like the idea of avoiding annual subscriptions ! One thing to bear in mind about the various editing software packages is that there’s a certain number of users of them who are very “techy” and they can usually get to grips with problems (Premiere is a very widely used piece of software and I’d be surprised if there are any really “unsolvable problems” with it). Many users - by contrast - like myself - do not have the time or inclination to bone up on some highly technical matters to “fix things”. I count myself as reasonably “computer literate” and that’s it - I suspect Apple sussed marrying a MAC operating system with video editing software specifically designed to work on it would keep people like me happy!
Any thoughts on Apple Motion versus After Effects? I made the switch from Premiere to Final Cut a few years ago, just as a hobbyist, and when I couldn't figure something out I always found great, free tutorials over the years, but I haven't been as lucky with Motion. I've always found really good info and tutorials on AE, and not to say Motion info isn't out there, but I guess it just doesn't have the user-base to be covered as much as AE.
I owned a copy of FCP for 10 years but never used it because I have been a Premiere my entire career. Once Premiere started crashing on every project I did, I bit the bullet and started learning FCP and now I am so angry at myself for not using it back when I bought it. Would have saved me so many long hours of renders that crash and lost projects.
@dex4sure361

Not to mention how much money you would've saved. Let's face it, Premiere + After Effects and other bunch it is quite expensive considering DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro are just one time purchases... And well Resolve has free version as well which is really capable as well.
Great video! Im debating if i should get my first mac for video editing because premiere is always slow or just crashing. Plus the new M2 chip with 16GB sounds like a good deal to me!

It’s definitely one of its strong points; how easy it is to get up and running!
Love your style :) your dreads look freshhhh Btw look up some shortcuts for final cut. If you press or hold P u can then move stuff around. And hold tilda key when deleting clips to turn off magnetic feature then. So I think once u learn it, it is great. And you will save money in the long run. Adobe is getting expensive once you look back and see how long you have been paying for their licenses
I'm just a hobbyist where video editing is concerned and use it mainly for editing drone/Osmo footage. I found Premiere probably the easiest to use (slider based controls), but also experienced crashing and other niggles, plus the cost of subscription is high for hobbyist use. I've always found FCP to be quite unintuitive myself, if honest, but that's maybe because I haven't taken time to learn it properly! My MacBook has an M1 chip, so I suppose FCP been optimised specifically for this. I started to use Resolve - initially the free version - then got a free licence to Studio, when I purchased the Speed Editor. They say it has a steep learning curve, but it's also quite easy to just get up and running, plus all the plugins you mention are available for that platform too. Not trying to promote Resolve here you understand - just sharing my personal experiences.

As a heavy Adobe user I've always been curious (but have never actively looked into this), what's your workflow when creating/editing and importing graphics or images into fcp/resolve or when you have to tweak your audio a little more than your video editing SW is able to do?

It depends on the size of my project. When I shoot with my A7s III I tend to shoot in 10-Bit 4:22, 4K, Slog3, so the files can get very big. At that point I edit off my external SSD. Otherwise, if my project is smaller because I've used an action camera (even though I still shoot in 4K or 5.3K with a GoPro) then I have enough space.
I started editing in FCP then moved to Premiere Pro. But now I'm bouncing between Premiere and DaVinci. Do you do your color grade and graphics in FCPX, or do you use Motion?

Nice tour. No one likes Adobe's subscription fee. My bro has has been using FCP for 13 years. I've been using Corel VideoStudio 17+ years and I dread moving to a new editing environment. My secret with VS is 5+ years between upgrades and keep expectations low.
I have worked with Premiere for really long time since 1.0 and original Final cut pro. My guess is the crashes may be the 3rd party plugins. I have red giant and when I started to use one of the plugins, Premiere crashed. Also Morph can also cause crashes. So I try to stay away from 3rd party’s plugins. I do like the power of being able to work with After effects and Premiere which make it nice to edit and work with motion graphics. I remember using autoduck to do the same but Premiere is a better. They are both fine editing system as well as LUMAFUSION for ipads. Also you may want to give Davinci Resolve 18, really good color grading and editor tool. Yeah, I used the autosave feature with Premiere but it’s not as frequent as FCPX. FCPX is instant so you won’t lose any work at all, but with Premiere you could do a whole chunk before it saves and then it crashes and you’ve just lost all that stuff because the save was maybe 5 minutes ago.

Yup! Final Cut is the best editing software for creative storytellers! It gets the complicated UI nonsense of other systems out of the way and streamlines the entire workflow and editing process. At the same time it’s also a much deeper and feature rich app than one would think at first glance. Premiere has better advertising and has had a ton of features added to it. Because I wanted to try FCPX and when I did I really liked it
The "QuickTime Gamma Shift" issue, where exported video looks washed out in QuickTime Player, Safari, and Chrome is more of an Apple issue. Adobe uses the standard gamma of 2.4, the television broadcast standard for exported video. FireFox, ironically doesn't suffer from this issue as it doesn't use ColorSync, so video viewed in FireFox would look exactly like how it looks in your Premiere timeline. This long-standing problem can be tackled in three ways: 1. Do nothing: Use the exported video file as-is, knowing that it'll look fine on most TVs and computer displays. 2. Export gamma-corrected video for Mac viewing: Use Adobe's free QuickTime Gamma Compensation LUT on export to make the video look similar to the Premiere timeline in color-managed Mac applications. Which would have an impact on how it's viewed on non Macs. 3. Add contrast to the Premiere timeline: Use an adjustment layer to increase contrast in Premiere, making the exported video look better on computer displays, which use a brighter gamma value. The root of this issue lies in Apple's use of a non-standard gamma value of 1.96 for displaying Rec.709 video, causing the washed-out appearance. This problem won't be resolved until Apple addresses it. For now, video editors can grade for Rec.709, calibrate their displays, and try not to stress over the inconsistency. Yeah, but the constant crashing might be a bit of a deal breaker ^^

Yep, I saw a thread about all those solutions, but I didn’t want the inconsistency of videos looking overly saturated or contrasty in some scenarios and not others so FCPX was the best solution, haha. I don’t regret switching at all 😅
could you do a video for a beginners tutorial for FCP?

What about Davinci, a brilliant program.

When you're on MAC: FCP optimized, one time payment, user friendly, rendering is so fast! 💯

Yeah, it’s great. I’m still enjoying using it.
I use Final Cut simply for two reasons. No subscription hell like with Adobe and usually Apple made products like that run best on the Mac silicone. When adobe made it $60/month and locked me into a year contract, I couldn't take it anymore.
FCPX rarely crashes over the 10 years I have been using it.
OMG I thought the Gamma shift was just me, I was wondering what was going on when I was exporting or even editing. This is BS, OK, time to change to Final Cut?

@@TamaraGabrielUK yep, I asked a whole bunch of people on Reddit what was going on with my footage, they all blamed me. Thanks for confirming this gamut issue is an issue with Premiere. It's so annoying though, especially that you said it was a Mac specific issue. i'm pretty much done with Adobe, there are other Mac specific issues with Photoshop also.

Oh yeah? I’ve not had issues with Photoshop, just Premiere.
I love Final Cut I really wish I could use it on pc ;(
Probably the 1000 time with this question but, have you tried Davinci Resolve?

Not yet, I keep meaning to but with the 90-day free trial of Final Cut I thought I’d give that a go, then I was pulled in and loved it 😆

@@TamaraGabrielUK fair enough! I thought since you're definitely proficient in color grading you'd enjoy playing around with Color Management and/or ACES with your A7s3 Slog3 10bit footage 😊

Yeah, I’ll definitely give it a go when I’ve got some down time, as it seems to be popular for colour grading.
that dam gammma exporting thing still really bugs me .....great video .... i think I'll still stick with PR just because it's like second nature when editing on it..... but yeaaah FCP does look cool
Mac are very good the only problem his the cost of upgrades and getting repairs ,, very expensive .. wish you well

Thanks
premiere has this gamma shift since 10 years, unbelievable they still did not fix it, so glad I switched to final cut 2019
You forgot the main reason. You don't need to pay monthly for it, you buy it once and own it forever. That's the only reason why I'd change to FCP cause I honestly really like premiere pro, I just feel the monthly payments are a ripoff.

@@TamaraGabrielUK why is that ? I am contemplating on getting 2TB , but some of these reviews can be so overwhelming… some advise not to increase SSD but instead go for an external drive , some say 1TB is already an overkill for basic YT videos with 1080p & 4K rendering , and that the price of 2TB ain’t worth it , especially if you do not do any 3D work . What can you advise?
@TamaraGabrielUK

I wish I got 2TB because I’m often working on several videos at a time so run out of space quickly and sometimes it’s a pain having to use an external hard drive whilst I’m working just because I don’t like having something dangling out that could get disconnected whilst I’m editing, because I’m not usually just sitting at my desk. But that’s just my personal experience, 1TB is enough for other people.

I’ve heard that it is, but I’ve not personally used it. Check out Terry Warfield, he’s done a few videos about it.
Long term FCP user - ironically FCP crashes on me more than premiere! But I LOVE editing in fox, premiere is just… slower!
i have been using premier for 10 years and just tried to switch to final cut. it is not a easy transition final cut doesn't allow you to transition any of your skills over
When Adobe officially rolls out ai editing on premiere .. it’s going to make a lot of editors jump to premiere .. they’re already showing it off .. Mac hasn’t even mentioned the word ai yet. I do want to give FC a true chance and will be when I receive my Mac book
