Final Cut Pro vs. Premiere Pro (Why I switched)

After many years I did what I thought would be impossible... switching my main editing program. I still use some software from the old days, but I'm mostly converted. Here's why.

5:26 This is exactly my feeling. After 20 year as a professional editor I have fallen in love with editing again. The two things I was most skeptical about - the magnetic timeline and the trackless system - is actually FCP's biggest strength, and it makes totally sense in a digital world. I have edited on Avid MC and Premiere for years (and still is) and they are actually stuck in an analogue way of thinking. The biggest problem with FCP, imo, is that the industry that I work in is very reluctant to embrace FCP since the catastrophic launch in 2011 (and it doesn't help that the icon/UI looks a bit too cute)

Extremely insightful. I've used premiere pro since 2014 and I particularly enjoy the media encoder and the dynamic link especially when animating (AI & AE). But the biggest drawback is the monthly/yearly subscription, especially because I reside in Nigeria. Now, why this is a gigantic issue for Nigerians is because our local currency (naira) cards can't make dollar transactions, therefore we need to purchase dollar in cash from the Blackmarket at an exchange rate of 750 NGN to 1 USD, that is an insane amount! When I did the maths paying for Adobe suite, I could have built a villa by now! With Final cut pro, I see that I can purchase the app one time from the app store in my local currency. So, Adobe, I love you guys, but its not favourable for many Nigerians.

Fun fact. If you use show in finder on any PSD graphic clip used in FCPX, open, edit and save. It will update the changes in FCPX. Also Motion is a very affordable easy to grasp alternative to After Effects. And envato is outstanding for grabbing some quick title packs, logo openers, stock footage, etc. Great Video this VS argument never gets old. At the end of the day no matter the tool you do you!!!

yes, totally agree with all your comments. Doesn't worry me if everyone uses a particular app, I will buy and use the apps that I like but I guess I was in a huge team and they were all using Premiere, my thoughts maybe different. FCP / Motion etc are so much faster to use, Premiere is quite clunky at times.

Oh for me it's not even a comparison. I was stuck on Premiere for a while because a new Mac wasn't in my price range, but after editing became my job I was able to justify getting a 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro. It's a game changer. I can sit in a cafe and not drop a single frame and get up to 8hrs of battery life in FCP. Unbelievable stuff. On an XPS I doubt you could get 2 hours in Premiere and all while it will drop frames constantly... SUCH a long list of pro's for FCP and cons for PP. And what you said about "no more crashes... just editing" resonates with me SO SO MUCH. The amount of time I spent on reddit trying to solve constant crashing and bugs etc. and even trying to find dumb default settings buried in preferences was outrageous. Basically haven't ever crashed with FCP.

I have used Premiere on one (1) feature documentary (92m) shot in 2k (back in 2014) and spent about 30% of my time with crashed and adjustments to what Premiere SAID it could do, but then couldn't. On paper, it's the more potent and feature-rich EDL, no doubt. In real life though - it isn't. The next film came and I switched to FCPX - and it gave me back the feeling that I was working ON A FILM, not as an Adobe beta tester. And man, working with music in FCPX is so much more intuitive and easy, too. And then (last story) there was this moment when I was stranded in Saudi Arabia (duh) with a project to deliver, and my Mac broke down because of the heat, in a place where there was no service for hundreds of miles. I had to use an office iMac to do the project. With FCPS 10… dot2 maybe or dot3. And what can I tell you… it went almost flawlessly. Apple's software-hardware integration between even an older iMac with 8GB Ram, no SSD and my project was so good (and still is) that I would never, ever switch back. So, Taylor: "welcome back" and happy editing!

Im so on the fence after watching this video. I own a Media Company and I started a KZread channel myself featuring local businesses in my area, mainly restaurants. I'm starting to do review more cameras and gear, plus tutorials on how I operate. I have used Premiere Pro for over 7 years now and recently downloaded FCPX 90 day demo. I'm one week into the demo. It is driving me crazy with the magnetic timeline. I don't know why!! But it feels like FCPX has a mind of its own. Also, I love the ability to control my exports VBR rates, CBR rates etc. I have not found out how to do this yet in FCPX. Recently Premiere Pro has added the ability to REMIX songs on the timeline. Yep, change the duration of a song and the song will stop at the right moment after Premiere remixes the song for you on the timeline. Way cool. So features like this keep me coming back to Premiere Pro. Yes, all your points are valid. I have had Premiere crash on myemany time. It is is frustrating as F*&#! But I do like that Adobe is constantly adding new features like Remix. Just my opinion. I plan to stick it out with FCPX on my new 16" MacBook Pro M1 PRO. I do love the speed of FCPX on my laptop. And that is what keeps me coming back to FCPX. All of this to say. I'm in a world of hurt trying to figure out what to do. LOL Thanks for the video. It got me thinking again!

Listen man, I get it! I was in premiere for over 5 years, and I am currently going back and forth for some projects as occasionally I’m required to use PP. At the end of the day, they’re both awesome, and I’ve been severely hindered in my animation ability switching to final cut, and that’s been on my mind a lot. I think if you’re comfortable on PP, there’s no real reason to change, but for me the stability has been the reason for switching. FCPX has me enjoying editing again, and that was worth it for me, but keep in mind my client funnel is slim and I spend a lot of time on a few projects, which means less stress on exporting workflows. When it comes to bitrate, you can change it if you have the program Compressor, but for me I’ve really enjoyed the results coming out of the default, 1080p for social, and 4K settings. At the end of the day, I think it would be a fun challenge as an editor to learn it in your free time, and then choose one project to try it out when you have time to go slow and not rush, and see how the results change! I’ve only been freelance for 4 years, but typically making changes to my workflow improves my work almost always as it pushes me to rethink everything. Good luck Mike!

@@tkthree I have been using FCPX on my new MacBook 16" M1 Pro laptop. It does run extremely smooth! I have watched a few tutorials on the "magnetic timeline" and can say that I got the hang of it. Yes, it is different, but on a laptop it really is much faster. The only issue I have run across now is that when FCPX exports to MP4 files, in H.264, it can take a long time! I have read up on some comments on Apple supporting talking about this and it seems to be a known issue. So I have been checking out other ways in wich to export it. I have not tried the facebook / youtube export option yet. I did see compressor, but have not purchased it yet since I;m still going back and forth. I think, in the end, I will pick up FCPX for my laptop and quick videos, but for my more larger projects, I will. most likely stick with Premiere. We shall see! Thanks again for the response and the great video. It really inspired me to check out FCPX. :) BTW, my first video edited n FCPX will be coming out tomorrow. I was happy with it!!

Just saying, you can virtually have a magnetic timeline in premiere if you know the tools in the program. Ripple delete, ripple edit tool, insert tool, ripple paste. If you only use these, bam, you're working in a magnetic timeline. Not to say there isn't value in having it built into the way the timeline works but I think there's also value in being able to decide how you work. Lack of magnetic timeline is a common complaint ppl have about premiere but if you know aaaalllllll of the tools, you can do...whatever you want.

Does that cost extra? lol I see your perspective & agree hardware & cost-wise, but is starting as a Mac user... build a pc for video editing and your speed & crashing issues go away. You argue that you're "..down to like only 3 crashes a month on final cut!" The multiple Windows 10 Intel/Nvidia Adobe edit systems we use don't crash, and are blazing fast. Also, I am always perplexed when I see supposed Premiere Pro editors gush about FCP gapless, magnetic timeline. Premiere has had the ripple editing tools right there at your fingertips forever. shift+delete closes gaps, hold shift while you trim a clip & it closes gaps..... Do a lot of editors not use Premiere's Ripple tools? I think they are essential. And I don't get why FCPs ripple by default would be a better option than ripple editing when I choose? I Need to do more FCP stuff to compare.

@@jakobklentz No we are not communicating well. You - "PPro will overwrite sound clips if they are on the same track before you do the ripple. " No, that's an insert, that's insert editing. And this "And if you unlock the tracks the fx. dialog will not be in sync anymore."... Yeah, don't do that. Why would you do that? You know, should kinda be aware of your tracks & use them with intention. If an editor decides that's just bloat & clutter they don't need to be aware of, how do you make a fair comparison to FCP's experience?

I stick with Premiere Pro 2022. I have Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 as well. Both are good, but Adobe wins. Sorry!

I’m a video editor and vfx artist and I’m using Adobe products for about 5 years. The points that you’re saying was frequent in maybe 2017 or 2018. But in 2022 I see little to no crash and hiccups. Because these are Ram hungry programs, you should give them adequate amount of Ram and you’ll be fine. Only thing that Final Cut Pro does way better than premiere pro is render and playback. Other than that I see many bells and whistles are missing in Final Cut Pro which I use in a daily basis. But the point for me is the dynamic link in Adobe which makes my life easier.

Adobe is WAY overpriced! I will always choose a stand-alone one time purchase application over a subscription model, especially given that Adobe is one of THE MOST expensive subscriptions for this type of suite.
