I love getting dressed up and that's what you generally see from me here on the channel. But there are some real life situations where that isn't practical or advisable. Like, I'm not wearing a tuxedo to play with the dog. And I'm not putting on a suit to lift weights at the gym!
Believe it or not, athleisure and athleisure wear are a part of my style on most days. So if you're mostly used to seeing me in a suit and tie, this video might come as something of a shock to you--especially if you remember my thoughts on athleisure from back in the day! But, men's style is a journey and our personal styles evolve over time. I hope you enjoy this peek inside my "real life" outfits with an athleisure lookbook and Public Rec review.

I love that you could reflect on your past and have a perspective on it. You are right, style changes as you evolve. I've been interested in menswear since 10 years back now and I would for sure say my style has become more casual over the years. I started out like many, only wanting to wear suits and ties and while it's a great look its not always fitting. I really enjoy finding casual style and making it look timeless. Really love to wear shawl cardigans, suede jackets, layering. There is a lot you can play around with on the casual end but still making it look really stylish.

Love your comment. You totally get it. I often find that people who have a negative and visceral reaction when I post something casual--or "REAL"!!--are likely at a different point on their own style journey. Like you so wonderfully acknowledge, we all start off on this journey really focusing in on the dapper and tailored side of our wardrobes. And we go deep. It's an important part of the process and almost necessary to shun other forms of dressing so you can fully immerse yourself in what is "right". But as I point out in the very beginning of this video, it's just not practical all the time! If you're saying you wear a suit and tie or slacks and a sport coat around the house, I really think you're lying to the world about who you really are. I'm a real person and don't play a character for viewers on the channel--that, to me, is creative expression and a chance to connect with other real people.
What I love about each article of clothing shown is the fact that not ONE piece screams labels/logo. 👏

I think what you said at 0:26 bears repeating, and really resonates with me, both as a 40 y/o and someone who’s settled outside of a major city. I love being conspicuously dressed up for things - when I show up for work without a jacket of some kind, my coworkers wonder if something happened to me! - but life in the suburbs/exurbs really doesn’t allow for opportunities to be formally dressed, and often you’ll stand out in a bad way if you’re not careful. I think evolving your style, especially as you age, is important, and frankly, there’s a lot more artfulness to elevating a casual wardrobe than the dress-by-numbers approach you often need to do for wearing suits for work.

"but life in the suburbs/exurbs really doesn’t allow for opportunities to be formally dressed, and often you’ll stand out in a bad way if you’re not careful." Amen to that! I find that where I am, stylish everyday wear allows me to stand out some while I fit in.
I like how you made the effort with those clips of you at the gym, taking out the trash etc... I know how much work it is to make just a couple second clip like that, but it made a big difference to the video! Thanks for making the content you do, I find it informative, inspirational and entertaining :-)

Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this. I’ve been adjusting my look too, from tailoring to casual, without (hopefully) looking sloppy. I think it’s worth saying that there is more at play than an individual style evolution. As much as I love tailoring, the world has changed and I’m not going to wear a suit and tie taking zoom calls from my dining table. I try to find occasions to wear the tailoring I love, but I have to wear something else at other times.

Public Rec is fantastic. Their henleys and Politan hoodie are the best in this sphere.
As Sabaton once mused: 'It's the nature of time that the old ways must give in, the new ways come in sin. When new meets the old it always ends the ancient ways.' Not surprised at the 'hesitation to acceptance' arc. It's always a fun one to see.
In the infantry, we always talked about METT-TC: mission, enemy, terrain/weather, troops/support available, time available, and civil considerations. Essentially the situation dictates our actions, uniforms, equipment, and courses of action. I think that’s how you’ve illustrated your approach. Your “uniform” and equipment will be dependent on your activity, your friends, the weather, civil considerations. One weird thing about Oregon: people seem to hate umbrellas here, for some reason. No matter the civil considerations, I usually have my umbrella because I have a nice one with a whangee handle I bought at an estate sale for $10.

Z! Exactly. Great to hear from you.
I have recently struck a very comfortable balance in my wardrobe where the clothing I'm most comfortable wearing usually include slacks and button ups, and other things that you'd find hovering around the nebulous "smart casual" label. I have jeans and tees, and I have suits and tuxedos, and I'm able to recognize that situations exist that call for those. The majority of the time, though, I find somewhere in the middle to be best, because it allows me to pull from and show off my knowledge of sartorial style and streetwear/modern fashion to look not so stuffy or casual as each respective method would imply in a vacuum.

I think athleisure, when done right, looks really nice. Also, it's comfortable. When I'm dressed up, I am always conscious about what I'm doing, my posture, etc, which gets tiring. When I'm in athleisure, I am far less conscious of things and more relaxed. However, one of the things I don't really like about it is that it's very common, and i don't really like to be in similar outfits with most others. I like #4 the most because of the colours and the balance in the outfit. #5 is nice too, but the hoodie isn't for me personally. And I would avoid mixing dressy clothes with athleisure looks for myself.

Dockers Alpha collection is great for comfortable pants that you can wear out
Little late, but I would highly recommend the brand Rhone. They're more on the casual end but their 'chinos' look like really high end chinos yet they're super comfortable and fit just like suit pants would. Their T-shirts and polos (long and short sleeves) are super comfortable as well. They also have outerwear that fits REALLY well.
When your in your 40s it's a weird space, but I use my favorite style and color and stay monochromatic to pull off looks and I get compliments from ladies, guys and younger guys who are inspired. Going to A couple countries means a blend of casual and comfort in a limited wardrobe is essential.

For me, it's the health tracking stuff--HR, workouts, etc. And one of my other favorite parts about it is that it dislodges me from my phone. I hate typing with my fingers so I love just being able to respond to texts via speaking to the watch, which also keeps me focused and less likely to bounce to another app once I'm done.

Hello Brian! I've been following your work from quite a time, I'm glad how you reflect and feel now. You will always be a style and class reference, just like you I like to suit up any chance I have but being realistic it's quite difficult to do it in every single activity you make on a day. You look very elegant, I mean you have jeans and a blazer, your accesories, everything look very good and with quality. Keep going forward, the only scenario I've lived is the trash one 😂 because I was already dressed. Last time I had an outdoors activity during the morning on the evening I suited up and went to the cinema and a coffee shop, you can dress up any chance and people instead of judge should try it! You look very nice and attractive through the years, congrats ! Keep inspiring.

I would love to know the brand/where to find the jacket you wore in outfit no.1. Been looking for that herringbone textured grey jacket for a while now.
Personally I just dress for the occasion and try to insert my own style into whatever dress code/norm at the time. When I'm not at work, it's mainly dress for the weather.
I was hard core, nothing but selvedge jeans and boots 365 days a year 10 years ago. I have loosened up over the years. I embrace shorts in the summer, loafers year round, and sweats. Still dont like athleisure, butter soft is something I'd like to describe my frosting on a cake and not my pants lol. Have you tried any of the thinner knitted wool hoodies? I think those are quite nice and a little more elevated than a regular one. There are many options but I have the "pascal hoodie" from oscar jacobson which I like, it also doesnt have the kangaroo pounch which is a plus in my opinion.
@hespokestyle
Жыл бұрын
Awesome. This particular hoodie might be a good choice for you as it lacks the front pocket, which tends to make the overall feel more casual. I would also recommend looking into a thinner cashmere or wool/cashmere blend in hoodie form. They exist! I'll actually be featuring one on the channel next Thursday so stay tuned1
I honestly don't agree with your view, but hey it's nice to hear another point of view. I do believe you are correct that wearing a suit to run a general run at target might be over the top. However, I feel the other spectrum is just as bad. You can look good on any side of the spectrum, and I feel that people don't want to put in the least amount of effort. A pair of chinos 98 cotton or 100 jeans are comfortable enough , i don't see the point of garments that try to give the illusion of something more refained when they simply are not .

Those outfits are actually very casual, and in almost all the outfits you can swap the sneakers for a leather derby, or a chukka boot and looks better and be still comfy. The only outfit that I didn’t like it is the first, for me the hoody is too sporty I cannot see with a blazer or a sport jacket. I will definitely suggest the same look with one of the options that you wear in the other outfits or a Barbour waxed jacket.

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants.” Karl Lagerfeld. I think you’re familiar with the quote, as you sort of mentioned it. A very slippery slope here. I tend to agree with 2015-you. The pants are nice but this is still very very casual clothing. I believe the (sorry) trend has been revived with the hideous work-from-home culture, where we all dress in “elevated” pajamas for the entire work week. 🤦♂️ Fine for taking out the trash, hiding from the paparazzi and … that’s it. I really think hoodies with sport coats or any other comparatively dressy coat is going to look really dated in the coming decades. I don’t think it looks bad, but I think it’s definitely today. Same for colorful sneakers and suits.
Well, I must say we must evolve along with our lifestyle. From very young age, just as I was able to afford decent shoes, I used to wear most on leather soles. As time has passed, I do realise rubber sole is much more practical in most scenarios. Honestly, I only keep leather soles for special occasions and evening shoes.
Mr Sacawa, I desperately want some new clothes. I’d love to have your opinion on where to buy chinos, shackets, and linen shirts. You got me really excited and I bought the Public Rec pants. Waited for them to go on Black Friday sale and everything, and I must say that I was extremely underwhelmed and even disappointed with the quality. Nothing special, and definitely did not warrant the $100+ MSRP price tag for me. I genuinely felt "influenced" by this video. I sent them back. To me, they were average quality and I went and bought a generic brand of similar pants off Amazon that I felt was higher quality for like $30. Genuinely happy with those. Not going to name the brand because I have nothing to gain!
I think everyone goes through cycles; periods that you want to dress up to feel better, confident, etc and periods that you want to feel comfortable and concentrate your efforts to things, activities that require more thought and 'processing power'. That's just my opinion.
