MOST IMPORTANT TIPS for working in Layout
In this video, I figured I’d make a video summing up some of the most important content so far for modeling for creating architectural drawings in Layout.
Before I get started, I do want to thank my newest supporter on Patreon, William Fowler. Patreon is the website where you can support creators that you like on KZread, so if you like what I’m doing on this channel, please check out that link in the notes down below.
If you’re looking for more information on Layout, please make sure to check out thesketchupessentials.com/layout - I’m building that into a hub of information and resources about layout, so if you’re looking for more tutorials and other Layout information, that’s the place to go. Also, leave a comment below and let me know what resources/tutorials you’d like to see on that page.
Tip 1 - Turn off Perspective
When working in a SketchUp model, by default it has a perspective camera view, meaning that all the sight lines in the model run to a vanishing point. This is great for 3D views, but when you’re trying to create floor plans and elevations, you just want to have a straight up and down view. Go to the camera menu, then select “Parallel Projection” to turn off perspective to get the proper view for those floor plans.
Tip 2 - Understand the difference between Raster, Vector, and Hybrid
Layout has 3 different ways that it can render your images, and each has its own benefits. Vector rendering renders your lines so that they’re crisp and smooth, but does not render things like materials, so they’ll show up just as shaded colors. Raster renders complex materials, but your lines will show up choppy in your images. Finally, hybrid is a combination of both, allowing you to generate smooth lines and materials, but it comes at the cost of increasing rendering times on your PC. Knowing the difference can save you a lot of time in your models.
Tip 3 - Use the preserve scale on resize check box
One of the things that can be a little frustrating for new users of Layout is trying to resize and place drawings in your models. The reason for this is that often when bringing a new image into Layout, the images often lose their scale if you try to resize them. However, if you look in the SketchUp Model tab, make sure to check the “Preserve Scale on Resize” button to lock in your scale, so you can resize viewports without changing the scale of your models
Tip 4 - Layer Views by unchecking the box for “Background”
The way that you create your plans in Layout is by layering views on top of each other. However, sometimes you’ll try to drop a view on top of another view and you’ll find that it blocks the view beneath it. However, if you go into the styles viewport and uncheck the box for “Background,” Layout will make the background of your view transparent so you can stack it on top of your other layers.
Tip 5 - Organize your model properly
There’s probably no more important tip for working in layout than making sure that your model is organized properly. Because of the way that Layout works, you need to be able to turn layers and groups on and off to generate the plans that you’re looking for. If you start organizing your model as soon as you start modeling, this can be a fairly painless process.
That’s where I’m going to end this video - leave a comment below and let me know what you thought. What tips do you have for working in Layout?

A good tip would be to customize the toolbar to bring out other useful tools that don't show up by default, some of the most useful of those tools are grid snap and object snap. i find them very helpful and use them all the time when resizing things precisely without auto snapping to the grid or other objects. great video btw.

Depends on the look you're going for - Layout dimensions are far more customizable and can look a lot more professional if you're creating plans. It's a lot faster to just dump them in SketchUp, so...it depends?

Fantastic demos... loving it. Question i have please is, is there a ready way to save layout settings for future use within a template. E.g. Layer groups like within a Cad program such as Archicad. Finding the transition from Layer Groups to just scenes with little layer control challenging. Is there a way to save Layer groups, e.g, specific Layers for Layouts, specific Layers for electrical plan, floor plan, elevations etc...i understand you can use outliner to group items, thou there's no quick way to turn multiple layers on and off for each view. E.g Layouts group for room elevations, id like furniture off, and materials off, but as well as layee switching, id like it to jump to viewport settings such as styles. I simply want to be able to select a page like in archicad, that recalls layers, recalls styles etc....etc

You could create a template with all these layers built in - you'd probably just have to place the objects you'd like on those layers when you import them

Has Layout 2020 eliminted the need to stack views (viewports) on top of one another? That looks like an extremely arguous task. The end results look fantastic of course. In fact, Sketchup looks like it produces the best overall finished drawings based on what I've seen browsing the net.

Yes that is possible but it is very hard/tricky (annoying) to have to keep trying to re size and line up each time. It also means that any text or additional line/scrapbook items drawn on Layout will need to be resized. Ive watched a couple of your other videos and I've seen now how you can put hatching in sketchUp model first which is very clever :) Thanks

The door swings are modeled so that when you create 2D plans, they'll show up on the plan sheet. They're on their own layer, so you can turn them on and off as you'd like. Thanks!

  • @dreamsbuilt

    @dreamsbuilt

    6 жыл бұрын

i personally use 2 layers inside the door as a group...one being "door plan"....turned on when you wish to show a floor plan (door and swing shown as opened)...the other being " door elev" which used when the plan your working on needs to show the door closed, the actual door being a component so any changes to the door style will be addressed in one move. i do this and save in my scrap book, so every door you inset into a drawing comes with this as a normal function of each door. the other trick i like to use is all my section cuts are already made in my sketch up templete...it saves time making section cuts such as floor background...lines and such, i keep a few handy (1 story, 2 story, basement 1 story.....)..it sounds complicated....but is a HUGE time saver..... the breakdown: 1.) 2 files are created....one is to a reusable file i call "to layout" the other being the actually working model "model" 2,) in the "to layout" model, create a rectangle whereas most of your projects will fit inside of then push/pull to a ave height of your projects . I use 300' X 300' X 100' tall ( i deal with some pretty big projects). group the box and call it something you can get to real quick in both layout and sketchup ( i use ZVP, Z (View Port) which puts it at the bottom of the list, making it easy to find by clicking descending order on my layers tab. outside the group i do my main section cuts, inside the group i make all my back cuts back cuts: (section cuts one may need to limit how far behind an object you wish you client to see) the rectangle: the reason for the rectangle is to allow you to zoom extents on all scenes making having to move your scene to line up with the other scenes required to make a project happen in layout. 3.) copy / paste in place the rectangle into the file "model" whereas you try to make the rectangle the absolute center of your project,. (this box should be locked so it remains in the same place all the time on both "model" and " to layout" 4.) complete your project in the "model" file,. once completed and inside the group created with the rectangle copy / paste in place to the "to layout file" whereas all your typical sections are already made with such things as vector / raster, fog...line weight already set . (you may have to add a few section cuts depending on the project.) if you use the same section line ID's all the time, such as "floor cuts" consisting of several scenes your layout is 90 % is done when you "send to layout". (I have made several layout templates set up for such as floor plan, foundation, elevations, and such which have pre-made scenes already in the layout template) which also allows you to not have to have an incredible amounts of "scenes" so far this method has proven to be a HUGE time saver in my world. Justin: feel free to use this example, if you wish too, as something for a future video

I don't know a lot about the way Max creates geometry, so I really don't have an answer to this one

could you tell me how to make wall texture look more real

Generally speaking, if you want the wall texture to look more real, you're going to need to use a higher resolution texture. You can find those at places like SketchUp Texture Club - more info in this video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKChzaOyaLjehrw.html - Thanks!

That's going to depend largely on how your model is set up...

@@Thesketchupessentials i used the standard ''position camera'' method to make the sections for plan & elevations - i dint use the section tool.

Smaller model, don't use hybrid rendering, less viewports,etc...your PC speed doesn't affect this nearly as much as your model and layout setup

Generally I recommend that for most documents, you control the actual camera in the viewport from within SketchUp, but if you need a simple view for something, this method is fine

I'm not sure what this means, but it sounds like you're setting your scale or dimensions up wrong - nothing to do with Layout...
