The Layout is fairly simple - you just add your different text boxes, then you draw in dividers between them - the trick is using AutoText and Layers to get your title block to show up on every page.
Let’s start by just drawing a very rough title block - line on the right, box at the lower right hand corner, then we’ll start adding some text. Before we do that, I need to introduce you to the concept of AutoText. AutoText is text that Layout will automatically fill in for you based on information that is set in your model - it’s almost like the text version of a component from SketchUp.
You can see what AutoText information is available by going up to “File,” “Document Setup,” “Auto-Text.” These are the Items that are already in as AutoText, and you can adjust their values within this area. For example, let’s add our Address to our title bar.
To start, add a text box with the value "Address" in it to your title bar.
Now, change your address in the AutoText section. Notice that the text in your actual document changes to match what you’ve entered in your Document Setup.
You can adjust the style of your text within the “Text Style Section.”
Now, let’s add a logo in the upper right hand corner - just go to “File,” “Insert,” and find your logo image.
In this case, we’re going to use the AutoText for "Page Number", along with a letter and a pair of numbers.
You can add a page description section, dates, and other information in here as well. Notice that you can create a border around a text box by selecting “Stroke” in the “Shape Style” section.
You can draw lines to separate your various sections, and adjust the way they look using the “Stroke” option in your Shape Style section of your tray.
Now, let’s talk about getting this to show up on all your pages (or at least most of your pages).
First, you’re going to want to select all of this. You can group it or not - I’d probably group it. Then, you need to add a layer for Title Block, and put all this geometry on that layer. You can check it by toggling it on or off. You should be able to drag it down near the bottom. Then, assuming you want this to show up on every page, you need to click the option for Share Layer Across Pages. This will result on this layer showing up in the same location across every page.
You may want to click the lock button to keep from accidentally editing your title block.
However, sometimes you have pages you don’t want this to show up on - simply turn the layer off on those pages!
Now, let’s adjust our page numbering so numbering doesn’t start until after the first page. Simply go up to your Document Setup again and use the drop down to select the page you’d like your numbering to begin on.
Finally, you can save this block as a template so you can use it in future projects by simply going up to “File,” “Save as Template,” and saving it under your “My Templates” folder.

This is exactly what I needed to know! I love to have some more simple videos like this that show just basic features. Right now for example I'm having a ton of trouble navigating through my scenes, and I need to learn how to make layers in SketchUp.
Thx Justin... Everytime u amaze me with your new ideas ..... Really incredible watching your videos. Terse and telling
This is the best Sketchup video I have ever watched!!!! Holy heck! You are amazing! I cannot begin to thank you for this help!
Awesome as always. Full of information but to the point, not much wasted time in his videos.
AHA! Your video was the perfect answer to my questions on assigning start page numbering, etc. THANK YOU!
Thank you Justin! Great help!
Thank you!!! Good Explanations!
Thanks Justin. I'm an architect who is in the process of integrating 3D more completely in to my practice. I've chosen SketchUp to do this with. Seems like there is less tutorial content out there for LayOut so I especially appreciate your LayOut videos.

Hi Justin, great tutorial! I wonder if there's any way we can make the drawing scale as auto text? So when we change the scale of any layout, the "scale" text in drawing title is automatically updated.
Tank you very much

nice info...
I was looking for a way to have a company logo appear on every page of Layout without having to manually paste it on to every page. Starting at 13:00 in the video you show how to do this using a combination of groups, layers, "control whether this layer is shared across all pages" and document set-up. Thanks so much for showing how to accomplish important tasks when Sketchup and Layout defy intuition.
@Thesketchupessentials

I don't know that they defy intuition - they're just like anything else though - you've got to learn how to use the features to be able to utilize the features. Glad it helped!
Hi, I am just a starter in this SketchUp as I need to do some design drawings for my design works, and I need to do it the right way at the start and making a title Block is a good way to Start. Thanks

Informative, useful and easy to understand like all of your videos, particularly TheSketchUpEssentials Course. I purchased your course and it is extremely helpful. On the topic of title blocks that you use over and over is the topic of custom standard details that you use over and over in your layout drawings. For example, if you build decks you may use the same footing detail, stair connection detail, house ledger connection detail etc. in all or many of your drawings. Can these details be stored on a page in your saved template? If so then, for example, when you select your custom template all of your details will already be on say page 3. I look forward to your videos on Layout.

Hi Robert - Thank you very much! I really appreciate that you liked the course. I have not done a video quite yet on custom standard details, but that's a very good topic idea - I may actually put something like this together the week after next. The answer to your question is yes, they can be stored, but I'd recommend storing them in a scrapbook rather than in a page template. You probably don't want all of your standard details getting brought in to every new project you make (that would create some pretty large template files). Instead, if you save them within a scrapbook, you could drag over the details you need into your plans whenever you need them. I haven't really talked about scrapbooks too much on the channel yet, but they're very useful. Did that make sense? More to come in the next couple weeks. Thanks!
very useful...

Thanks Justin, very helpful. I have had some problems with scenes repeating on each page of a layout. Is this because of the layers on each page ?

Thx a lot it help me to find out the way for 5 years. By the way, can we use the auto cad title box put in the layout to make it mix with the team in using autocad drawing

Hi Justin, Thank you so much for such a great tutorial! Could I ask a question? I set up the title block on A3 plain paper. Now that it is saved as a template, I learned that I need to change the units to feet and inches. Is there a way to do this? Thank you!
@Thesketchupessentials

You should be able to change this in your document setup - "File," "Document Setup," "Units"
Can you export an existing CAD TB to layout?
hi there. Loving these bud. trying to create a contents page currently... any suggestions??
@Thesketchupessentials

Generally I create a table inside of Excel, then import that table - makes managing the information a lot easier. You can control the format in Layout
GREAT VIDEO! how do I crop a detail of a DWG file (After imported it) inside Layout? Thanks
@Thesketchupessentials
6 жыл бұрын
You could crop it by creating a clipping mask - I'll get that added to my list of vids to make - you'd basically draw over the section of the DWG you'd like to show, then select the objects you drew and go up to "Edit," "Create Clipping Mask." That should clip out all the areas of your DWG that aren't within your shape. Thanks!
hi, new to layout. I am using layout for drawings. but the dimensioning tool is not accurate. Is there any setting that I missed?

Hi Justin! Your Video's are very good! Easy to follow and easy to understand :) But i have a question; If you are finished with the "Titel Block", everything you do and mark in Layout is changing from Blue to Red? Can you tell me why and also how to change it? Best Regards ;)
@Thesketchupessentials
5 жыл бұрын
I think that red indicates that it's on a layer that's being duplicated across multiple pages - not 100% sure though
heelo brother from indonesia
Is this only for the paid version of sketch up or can i apply it to the free version?
I changed the sheet size to A2 the border of the template changed but the white background still as the original, how to fill the white background to the new format A2?
Hello Justin. I have not experimented with LayOut what so ever yet. For someone who's plate is Full, is there any Templates that are available to download, plug in or however, just to quickly Modify?

Hi Jim - what kind of templates specifically are you looking for? I think there are some scrapbook files here - sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=49829 , but I don't think I fully get what you're trying to do...

@@Thesketchupessentials Hey Justin. I actually opened up Layout for the 1st time 2 days ago. Templates are right there. Obviously the user we need to change them to there liking. I will just refer to your Video. No big deal. Thanks buddy!
Hi Justin, can you use existing cad title block in layout?
@Thesketchupessentials
2 жыл бұрын
I believe you can import DWG files to Layout, so most likely yes
Justin, I have also had trouble with scenes which were created in Sketchup not being transferred correctly to Layout. e.g. I created a floor plan,saved it as a scene and inserted into Layout, but it showed up as a 3D view of the model with the wall heights cut off. Why does this happen ?
@Thesketchupessentials

It sounds like you didn't actually select the scene for the viewport in Layout?

Woah! It’s better than AutoCAD!
Trying to add a page text block to a template that is included with new page, but editable (with different text) for each page. The idea is to have a common page,description location, but different text. When I add a text box to a template and have it automatically placed on every page, and change the text on one page, it changes on every page, not allowing me to have different page descriptions.

For the layer section, if you click the little image of the 2 pieces of paper, this will change it so that that layer doesn't repeat on multiple pages
Why is the quality of my sketchup drawings a bit blocky, edgy in layout. How can I make it finer.
