Like a lot of the commenters said below, your top 5 were spot on. For a long time I was at a motorcycle dealer, first as a mechanic then service manager. The only real difference in the customer is that riding is a sport. As service manager, it was my policy to help new riders as much as possible, to help keep them in the sport. Get this: A young female bought her first bike. In the first year, she had two flat tires, ran out of gas twice, and had a no-start because she left the lights on. Each time we rescued her (40 mile drive) and never billed her. At one point she had a legitimate warranty claim (oil leak). When she came to pick it up she brought her loudmouth boyfriend. He was bitching because we didn't change the oil (wtf? - never covered by warranty.). We changed the oil for free instead of me beating that punk 's ass. I did the same as you when money flows in the wrong direction. I told her to never come back. Loved the video, Bryan

Customer supplying the parts, that is cutting your profits and labor.Plus no warranty on the parts.I replaced an engine in a car,the customer whom is a cop asked us what we did to the transmission.Did not get inside the transmission at all when I changed the engine

Absolutely you lose money in this way. On top of that they always bring you the wrong part and makes the job more difficult. And a good 60% of these situations the customer misdiagnosed their own vehicle and still have the same issue after you install the part they bring you!

The customer is basically using the parts cannon throwing parts at their car that are not needed. That is why diagnosing the problem is done before replacing the part. One I found was with a 2008 Dodge Nitro with an air bag light was on,no part was not needed. The right front crash sensor was unplugged and the air bag light went out after I plugged it in.

My favorite customer was the one who INSISTED he was driving a Pontiac Gooole, called me a dumbass when I told him Pontiac made no such model. He then said he had the car in the parking lot, of course I had to see this, maybe it was an experimental supercar. As he spelled out letter by letter pointing out each one I was trying my best not to laugh. Yes, it was a 6000 LE

As someone who is not a mechanic, I can agree with all you said here. When I ask shops or mechanics to swap some parts in my car, I make sure I did my good research as to what could be the part(s) that need replacing and what quality i buy. If I buy cheap aftermarket parts, I buy them knowing that since i cheaped out, they may fail. I do not hold those who replace them accountable for something that may be and is probably my fault. Luckily, I have not had a big enough issue where I need to get a proper "diagnosis".

And that’s why I don’t need a mechanic, last time I seen a shop on the inside was 8 years ago. I am self taught, worth every tool and time I put into it. I don’t trust anyone else with my trucks or cars. I do the work, log it , keep up with them and one just hit 270k miles. Still looks like new inside and out !

Bryan, I have a good one. I had a customer commission me to diagnose his 01 MB no start issue. It turned out to be the typical EIS ignition module, so I sent it off to be rebuilt and I got it back and it’s came with two pretty new keys and his old ones were dead. Well I got his car running for him, hand him his new keys ect. And I get a called asking me what the hell is he to do with all the keys………like it was some big problem

I can sometimes be like that with the Mr diagnosis part because I don't trust some mechanics but at the same time I let the mechanic give me an idea on what is wrong then I might let them do all the work depending on their price but some shops double charge for parts.

DAILYGRIND you shouldn’t trust them , most are quacks themselves. I had a girl coming to me with her Chevy Silverado.. she came from a shop and her brakes did not feel right. Het friend is a guy I know, so he called me if they could come by. I jacked it up, and saw that the the shop she came from?! Hung her caliper (driver side) on the suspension!! Was of the rotor, pads gone, pistons pushed out . Fluid ever the fuck where... I put I back together, she got some pads and bolts and done. I made pics, prior work and after work performed. I told her to sue the fuck out of them.. I asked 0 for the work..

The customer who drops their vehicle off and ten minutes or less call and ask what you found on their vehicle. Well I have twenty on the lot, pick one. The red one, well I only have three of them. They try to be cage plus with that many vehicles at the start of the day and only three techs, chances are it isn’t looked at as of yet. Or the customer that calls up and “can you tell me what is wrong with my car?” (Realize this is in the days before cell phones) sure I can, can you move the phone closer to the car? I always liked doing that to them, my only revenge.

You gotta do what you gotta do when you start your business but you have to train the customers. The customers that can’t be trained or you just have to fight with to make money need to be weeded out. I definitely never try to bash another shop even if they did something not so right I try to nicely say hey everyone is human they might have made an honest mistake and missed that. If I am doing a major job like replacing an engine I look the entire car over so when they spend 3 grand for an engine to be installed they know they still have other things that need to be fixed and just because I am installing an engine this doesn’t mean your car will be brand new. I definitely try to not use customer installed parts because generally those customers are the pain in the ass people and your not going to be making as much off the job as you should be in the first place then you have to deal with them coming back when their 20 dollar brake pads start making noise. Nothing is more annoying than a customer coming in at 4:30 on a Friday needing an oil change or some stupid shit with no appointment saying they are going out of town that night. They get mad like it’s your fault they waited until the last minute to come in. How would that customer feel if they made an appointment and I didn’t finish their car because I was working on a car that didn’t have an appointment. Then you have the scum bags that say hey ever sense you did my oil change my radio doesn’t work. Well asshole changing your oil has nothing to do with your radio. No I will not do anything for you because I am not going to be scammed go to a corporate chain store and scam them. It’s amazing how shitty customers are in this business. Last thing you can’t let customers get away with anything, bill is paid before car leaves no excuses. Biggest mistakes I’ve made are giving deals to people you know. Everyone should be charged the same. Your friends are your customers and at the end of the day your friendships aren’t paying your businesses bills. You can’t be successful charging people 50 bucks an hr because your friends. I wouldn’t even tell your friends that you own the business if anything I would say you have a partner so you can’t give out crackhead deals.

Or it's making a noise, "Doctor is here, of course, its quiet" I won't play the go against another shop game either. I've offered to give old parts back before too. Want it yesterday? I raise the hourly rate, then like you said don't show up till a few days later, or they ain't got the money. I know how it is starting out and being hungry, but we learn quick. "Battery!? I JUST replaced this battery!" See this sticker that says 1998 on your battery? I know you just replaced it, you look honest. The problem is when you inadvertently drove this vehicle through the inter dimensional time portal in 1998 and arrived here in 2019 landing in our parking lot, you accidentally ripped the fabric of the time and space continuum. Probably damn near created a black hole! The resulting disruption of the Earth's magnetic field cooked all of your circuitry and control modules and they no longer communicate with the cars computer. In fact this vehicle cannot be repaired now as this battery is no longer manufactured in our time and as you know it is the only one that works in this car. You're gonna have to buy another vehicle, this one is not repairable. Of course you COULD get a second opinion down at this other shop....

Advise too customer do a visual inspection of everything.. how do i know whats wrong ? translation . i am clueless . answer . you need experience to spot the problem.. most of the time.and it could be multiple problems. advise you need to take it to a mechanic i am book right now have you tried phoning around if your in a rush ?...result you need a good service manager to handle the calls ...are policy is not to give advise over the phone as today's cars are to complex and require a first hand look at the the vehicle to come close to the problem.

This can be true but it all depends on who you take it to. Me for example I can't afford to use cheap parts I have to use the highest quality Parts possible. If you come back because a cheap part fail prematurely I have to jump off of whatever I'm doing and Now work on your vehicle and I lose money like that I just don't have the Manpower to deal with comebacks. so it all depends on what shop you take it to.

Bryan916 again I also see your point & agree with your statement , how ever from my personal experience here in England most small business garages will & do use the cheapest parts they can & make money from the part then charge labour on top, I see this kind of practice more then I care to. For the most part it works on many customers.
