Barenboim is underappreciated as a man can be who is internationally recognized. His energy and his analyses are always deep inside the music. Listen to his Mozart piano concertos with the London Symphony and you will hear subtlety, balance and the magic buried inside Mozart’s show - pay special attention to the slow movements. The hardest thing you can ask a piano player to do is play the same note twice - slowly - and keep the music alive. Listen to DB do it. He is a treasure. If he is sometimes difficult for other musicians, it is always because he wants to do a better job of letting the audience hear with greater understanding.

To Daniel Barenboim, it is such a wonderful, wonderful gift that you give in these short demonstrations and explanations, and in the master classes too, on KZread, made available to all who are interested - beautiful "gold nuggets - which inspire far beyond what you will ever know, lifting even the most elementary of us who can hear, feel deeply and appreciate with insatiable hunger for where the music takes one yet may not be able to reproduce it. You help us understand and give us a goal we might aspire to. It is so helpful that you don't talk down, or lecture but just explain and demonstrate, that you always drawing us as listeners to feel the music in the essence of our being. How does one express appreciation for such gifts. ER

Id like to have heard more about DB’s ideas concerning his ideas about “Mozart’s diary,” a concept I’ve not heard put in that way before. Obviously, the Adagio is so sublimely expensive that it sounds like a very personal dialogue between piano and orchestra, but DB knows so much about Mozart that I wish he’d talked about that more. His 1960s performance with the English Chamber Orchestra is my very favorite recording of this piece. Also, the sound and touch of his piano is simply amazing! I wish more were made like this!

It's mind-blowing to think that an 8 yr. old child could play a concerto such as this...how could he even reach the pedals?? But clearly that extraordinary talent is what separates a true genius from the rest of us. Thank you, Maestro Barenboim, for the "master class" in the beautiful 2nd movement of this concerto. You've really deepened my appreciation and pleasure in it. I'll tune in for many more!!

It is interesting how you mentioned this music being played by an 8 yr old child. American pianist and composer, Emily Bear, performed this concerto in concert when she was a child of about eight. A special device was attached to the pedals so she could reach them. You can see Emily on KZread.

No.23 proffers to me joy and solace... fell in love with the melody when I bought the CD back in sophomore in college, and have been listening to it for almost 20 years...the slow movement seems like gloomy where the orchestra chimes in, rendering an unresolvable wistfulness of not letting go. I know the fast movements will eventually transcend and elevate to rejoys and cheerfulness, just can't resist the melancholy-smitten and contemplate slow movement

Very good and interesting analysis of one of the most inspiring melodies of the world.👍👍👍 In my opinion, this melody's charme is its quite own braveness, how it tells us about the art of letting go. Mozart, the real master of releasing, retained the ability to reassess and question things of life, as well as letting go anything when the times demand it. Without this ability, he would not have coped with the death of live close family members, first, his beloved mother, then three of his children, and last, his father, who made up his career.

Some of us would prefer Beethoven and the Beatles as "the pinnacle of music". More passion, and a lot less fiddly-diddly minuets. Mozart had some incredible moments in his vast catalogue of work of course, but he was at his best when he was more emotional like the revolutionary romantic Beethoven (Requiem is a rare example).

As Bernstein once put it "Mozart combines serenity, melancholy, and tragic intensity into one great lyric improvisation. Over it all hovers the greater spirit that is Mozart's-the spirit of compassion, of universal love, even of suffering--a spirit that knows no age, that belongs to all ages."
