Ah, all you armchair referees out there, never been in the middle with a whistle but know it all - so I'll ask you this: Years ago we had about five Scottish International refs, Five Welsh International refs, a couple of English ego's (think Quittendon), and half a dozen Irish referees. Two Frenchmen, of dubious quality, but their national game is very different, so there were excuses for them. But now? Not a decent Scotsman, Welshman, or Irishman on the Panel. Dodgy 'If I feel like bothering' Wayne from England, and some absolute horrors from south of the Equator - so what has happened? UK rugby chiefs pandering to the Southern Hemisphere Blazers, that's what, allowing them to change laws to suit themselves, and to have the game refereed by unworthy muppets, Rolland must take a huge responsibility from his time in charge, when French referees - under the tutelage of Joel Dume (top ref himself) - improved out of all recognition when compared with the others. I've 'run the line' for them, and had them run the line for me, and been embarrassed by the lack of fitness, understanding, communication, mental application, and pure knowledge of the game that many exist upon. Bring back the likes of Norling (before he got a perm), Morrison, White, Sansom, Fleming, Efraim Sklar, the other guy from Paraguay whose name I can never remember, Steve Lander, and so on - go watch the videos and see how real referees coped, in the days before television replays took ten minutes out of every game!

0:10 the issue here was that he wasn't being consistent with his ruck calls, even taking into account the strange loophole that Italy was using. That's why he was being asked, because the players genuinely didn't understand what the referee's interpretation of the rules were because as far as they could tell, even with the Italian tactic, there were times that it should have been a ruck but it wasn't. It was bad refereeing, but it always gets posted as a 'haha england don't know the rules funny referee' moment.
