5 Major Reasons Religion Is the No.1 Cause of Poverty in Africa | Rev Walter Mwambazi | TEDxLusaka
One of the greatest enigmas of our time that begs an explanation is how a continent endowed with so much wealth and resources (human, food, mineral and land) can be so poor as to have 16 of the 20 poorest nations on earth. Hard discussions on this perennial African development question are ignited by Rev Walter in this talk, where he suggests that religion and its cascading effects is the biggest obstacle to development. He also proposes a solution to how Africans can free themselves from religious slavery! Reverend Walter Mwambazi is chiefly a thought transformation leader, but he is also a networker, digital & traditional marketer, published author, newspaper columnist, blogger, neural-linguistic and cognitive enhancement coach, radio & television personality and a social influencer. Before all this, he was an ordained and in-service minister for 5 years. Reverend Walter is married with 3 children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

None of these things are necessarily contradictory unless you define success by quality of life, and that somehow measures ability of citizens to acquire information and formulate informed opinions.. I know examples cant prove a hypothesis, but for a taste of the censorship and spirit of religion towards the advancement of knowledge just look at Galileo or Darwin.. If you think that religion serves to inform people and doesn't have an inherent interest in keeping people uneducated and impoverished, praying for miracles and paying their tithes rather than paying for what they actually need to improve their situations then I don't know what to tell you except that I hope your worldview serves you well. The World Bank and IMF (responsible for making the economic plans of many poor countries) is running with a very human mindset, unfortunately it's not sharing, caring and empathy but rather greed, arrogance and envy. At least, organized religions tries to tame these dangerous humans traits, but "modern-style economic liberalism" doesn't seems to have problem with them.

But he is wrong. Africans go into religion because they are poor, They are not poor because they go into religion. Poverty in Africa is majorly due to imbalance in international politics and economics, bad leaders sustained majorly by foreign countries among others. I can give examples from Eyadema, Paul Biya, Mobutu Sesekou to martyrs like Sankara, Lumumba, Olympio etc.

So God is the one that asked People to be cheating on each other, you mean? God told us to be honest, and kind to one another, but anyone leads your Country, the first plan, is to take all the riches of the Country, and put it in foreign banks for his own use, and care less about the Citizens of your Country. Church or Mosq will never advice you to do the wrong thing, which will harm others. The problem in Africa, some leaders are greed, to the extend that, they will never think about thir Citizens, nor the bring improvements for anyone to be close to them. Don blame God, cuz God created us, and give us brain, to decide what to do. Good, or bad. If the leader is not correct, just thinking about himself, how can the Country go forward? If everyone follow what God advices us, no one will suffer, in the entire world. Read the Bible, or the Quran, and see if it's asked you to harm others.

Wow.. just wow.. im from Romania.. and i salute you sir. Your last quote about "Empower the man to own the lake so it can be fed by generations" stuck in my brain now.. Hat off in front of you sir. So powerfull quote and i hope it will impact generations. What i see hapening in africa.. i lived for a period of time in my country.. and i perfectly understand the similarities you talking about in your speech...because all of them have the same goal at the end of the day.. Economic growth..for the Elites and not for all the people. Period. You know there is another saying.. that sounds like this.. "Keep them poor so you can thrive". I hope you know who use that quote.. Yes.. you've guessed.. The Elites.
Rev Walter always brings fresh insights into complex topics with unmatched simplicity for people to relate to. Spirituality VS Religion and the liberty of the truth in this deserves further personal research into one's sense of identity. Africa and Africans ancient history is deep.
So encouraging, well tabulated.... Indeed we need to change our mindset. Africans let's wake up...
Insightful TED talk! 👏🏾 he is absolutely right. I think it’s more than just Africa, religion is also keeping people in the Caribbean and Latin America poor. Even in some parts of the U.S. those that migrate over and keep that mindset. Great speaker & messaging
I disengaged from the catholic church from around 1990 after I studied Economics, African History and Geography because I immediately started to realise that something was wrong. Questions like : Why are Africans and blacks who have prayed for over 200 years not progressing and nothing good has changed in their favour? Although African leaders are to blame for not developing their countries, the Global Economic Structure does not, has not, and will never promote the development of African countries? Why are African countries still poor? Economics does not answer this, because it blindfolds its readers to believe so deeeply in the economic models that do not work for Africa. The answer to knowing the truth lies in International Political Economy which I have studied and researched on. Japanese, South Koreans, Singaporeans and Chinese don’t follow white Jesus, but just look at the level of development they have achieved. African christians waste two days (saturdays and sundays) every week to pray, while the Southeast Asian countries that I mentioned, use these two days to work, produce, acquire and create wealth. 👹👹😬😬.

Totally mindset shifting ideas. When I hear charismatic, evangelical personalities speak like this, I know there is hope for Africa. There is no freedom in a lie, that's why Africa has remained mentally enslaved long after the physical chains fell off. Ride on with this truth Rev, Ride on!!
