5 HUGE Mistakes You Must Avoid at Summer Camp

I have worked in Summer Camps in the USA and Canada, so I have seen enough to know the mistakes you are most likely to make if it is your first time working as a camp counsellor in a Summer Camp.
So, in this video, I tell you five mistakes you MUST avoid if you are going to be working as a Summer Camp counsellor. These mistakes are made by loads of first counsellors (not just me), regardless of whether you're working through Camp America, Camp Leaders, Camp Canada or another agency.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments and I will be sure to get back to you.
Best,
Olly :)

Hey Olly, how do you choose which camp you want to go to? And why did you decide to change camp for your second year?

  • @ollystaniland

Heya, excellent question. I think first you decide which type of camp you want to go to. For most people, I would recommend sticking to a traditional style of camp. Then, if you want to change this, you can in future years. Next up, you want to have a good luck through the website and get an idea for the size of camp, location and activities offered. This is important to do before the next step. During your interview with the camp director, you want to be kind of interviewing them as well. Ask any questions that came up when you were searching through the website. Finally, trust your gut. Know that, deep down if you feel something is the the right choice, there's probably a reason for it. If you want to find out why I changed camps, you should totally check out my video where I compare my experiences at camps in the USA and Canada. All the best, Olly :)

Thanks for video. I wanna add up something. 1) Dont joke in the camp.Because everyone has a different culture and somebodys may not understand your jokes and thinging about bad things for you. 2) I hate this one. Gossips. Please dont do this. 3) Dont discuss unnessarily. 4) Be polite.

Hi Mustafa, they are some good additions for sure! Camp is such a closed environment, so I agree with you that we need to be understanding of different cultures and opinions. If you go in with an open mind, I think that is the best way to be :)

@@ollystaniland honestly I don’t know but I think it’s the pay because I coach soccer and usually the summer is when I make the most but I wanted to take this summer off to just do something else I’m still only 19 lot of time for the real world but idk anymore 😭

  • @ollystaniland

Oh, I understand completely! Well, first off, camp is not about the money. Reality is, you don't get paid that much but it's everything else you get! You're only 19 right, so as long as you have enough money to get by now, you have the rest of your life to earn money. So, my advice to you is go to camp, create loads of memories and experiences that money can't by. If you get there and you hate it, you can always come back but you don't know until you go, right?
