Like you did, I really struggle with sweep picking because it always seems like you have to have reached a basic speed before you're able to perform it, but the drag-stop-drag technique you talked about makes sense, and is a very good way to be able to build up speed and coordination with both hands. Thank you!

Thank you for this. I'm 50 years old. Just bought a Schecter. I briefly played guitar from 16 to 21. I wasn't really good. I sold my Charvel and haven't played in 28 years. Just started playing again and I absolutely love it. I'm hooked and getting pretty good fairly fast in comparison to how I use to play. What a difference it makes when you become passionate about it. I have to say about 6 months ago I came across. Your short of you playing november rain solo. And I was watching you. Feel the music and it really intrigued me to want to start playing guitar again. Because I can feel music too. And I know if I could put that into my guitar playing. I could be pretty amazing Someday. So I have to say it is you. Who first inspired we do pick the guitar up again so thank you so much. I absolutely love seeing beautiful young women Thriving in their creative expression of whatever it is they are passionate about

Way better exercises than the usual spider-walk variations. Even as a beginner, I can see the logic and additional power of breaking away from the standard scales, but still using them as a base to make it more understandable. Thanks. I expect I'll be annoying my family with some of these exercises too.

I used to practice the Talk dirty to me solo when i was first learning ,and i’d just do the pull off run at the end as an exorcize. It really is a simple but mind blowing way of realizing how easy, yet complicated sounding runs can really take you to the next level! I’d encourage anyone to learn it!

Very, very nice set of exercises. I like them all. 3 is a variation on a concept I already use in playing scales, that of breaking them up in sequences and working up and down. I've mostly done this in triplets, but I'm starting to do more 4's, 5's and 6's. I like the way you organize the pent 4's in your head, alternating sides of the pattern like that. The others are all new to me. I love the drill for linking pentatonic positions. I can make immediate use of that, as I am just getting to the stage of trying to move fluidly about the fretboard in pentatonic positions. But I think my absolute favourite is 4, the hammer-on/pull-off strengthening drill. I like using legato, but my 4th finger is weak, and my hammer-ons on any finger aren't as good as my pull-offs. This will help. My preference for more technical info or drills-exercises, if you do them, would be ones pitched like this, to the early-to-mid stages of intermediate playing, or to the more ambitious advanced beginner. That early-mid intermediate spot is were I am right now, and anything that helps me develop through that is grist for the mill. These will help! I can tell already. Many thanks.

Yo Sophie! This is such a great great video... I am so incredibly lazy with exercises and have some really, really bad habits. It's stuff like this that totally changes my playing when i get lazy and doodle around, making some nice tunes but at the same hanging on to bad habits and not at all expanding on leads and good habits. So, thank you :) Just one thing: I had to watch the sweep exercise in slow mo quite a few times to figure out the actual 'picking' side of things. As for as I understand (and actually as per the tab itself): down pick all the ascending notes (up to the 7th fret on high E), up pick the 2nd note on the high E (10th fret) followed by the slide up to 14th and pull off to 10th. Initially on the first high E phrase I was playing: down pick 7th fret, hammer on to 10th, slide to 14th and pick it, pull off to 10th. When you played that section by itself you also picked the 14th fret, for the purpose of the video of course as to be heard. If you see this, please can clarify that is correct as my OCD is going nuts :D Cheers alot alot

I'm a 63 year old player from New York ,,playing over 50 years ,,my roots are in blues but I like tearin it up a bit on the metal side too. As a result ,no one knows where to put me ,,shredders see me as an old blues guy but old blues guys see me as a shredder. Anyway ..i like your style ALOT and I'm finding these exercises somewhat useful. Playing as long as I have its too easy to stagnate so fresh material is ALWAYS good !!! Thank you!!!!!

It's also nice to think of sweep picking as the fretting hand doing a lot of the work and sweep picking to accent the notes, play said pattern without sweep picking but muting the strings.

I've had a bit of time out due to boring life stuff and just got back into playing guitar again. I kept trying to remember some of the awesome licks and exercises I used to practice of Sophie's for strength and dexterity and couldn't recall. And then this vid appeared and I remembered exercise no#4! Wow does that p*ss off anyone in close proximity. Despite Mark Tremonti recommending playing that exercise whilst watching TV, I think he and Sophie need to emphasise it needs to be done when alone! :-) But all of these are super exercises to get warmed up and encourage hand synchronisation. Thanks again Sophie.
