Just some fun facts. I grew up watching black and white movies with Kwan Tak Hing as Wong Fei Hoong fighting villains always played by the equally famous "villain" Shih Kien. In all martial art movies, Kwan had the biggest most ferocious eyes and Shih Kein had the most vicous face. Bruce Lee featured Shih Kein as Han in his movie "Enter the Dragon". I once had the opportunity to watch a public exhibit of martial arts where Kwan was there to demonstrate his skills with the whip. He could whipped the cigarette off his assistant's mouth from a distance. Cheers

Great comment! Awesome facts! I learned of the Wong Fei Hung films after I had been a longtime fan of the genre. I grew up in the Lau Kar Leung era, but love the films of great actors such as Want Yu and the earlier era as well.

I learned of Kwan Tak Hing from my parents who were both born in 1945. I reckon Kwan Tak Hing and Shih Kein were big movie stars, especially in the time where the only entertainment was the silver screen..

In early 80’s Jacky Chan already played as Wong Fei Hung in his iconic movies “The Drunken Master.” & in the 90’s he reprised his role as Wong Fei Hung in “The Drunken Master 2”.

@matthunter9562 First off it's not with y but spelled Jackie Chan!!!! He hasn't spelled it that way since 76/79. Up till 1980 the Y was removed once Jackie had signed with Golden Harvest when he made Young Master in 79 and released in 1980. Drunken Master was a 1978 movie not an 80's movie.

I never knew that was Wong Fei Hung eventhough i watched it as a kid...lol. Only until recent modern times i read about it again (and probably after Drunken Master 2 that i realized that character was Wong Fei Hung). Jet Li still makes he better Wong Fei Hung though. He has that firm aura. Jackie Chan is just too comedic to be taken seriously.
I didn't expect this channel to also delve into martial arts history. Love it! Keep it coming!
Fantastic video!!! Just wonderfully contemplated and delivered, with excellent fluency. Saw you have a Part 2, will be subscribing and checking that out next. Greatness. Saw that nearly everyone is asking you to mention masters, so my asking would be Lau Kar Leung. Thank you for making such amazing content. Be well, my friend.
Thank you so much for your amazing work, brother. 谢谢你!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
The story about Yang Luchan in the chair was really great. I'd never heard this story before!

Hi, I highly recommend General Yue Fei who invented Xing Yi Quan ( Xing Yi Fist ). He invented it to train his army to fight the Jin invaders of the North who were giving the Song Dynasty a hard time. There is no retreat in Xing Yi bcoz General Yue Fei custom made it for attack. It is based on spear fighting. Another one is Baji Quan ( Baji Fist ) which was invented during the Qing Dynasty ( Manchurian ). Both Xing Yi and Baji are still being practised today. Third one is Ming Dynasty General Qi Ji Guang who invented the 'Mandarin Duck' formation and the long sword ( adaptation of Japanese samurai's katana ) to fight against Japanese pirates in the Fujian province. The long sword is still being practiced in China and the West today. The laz one is Yong Chun Quan ( Wing Chun in Cantonese and taught by Ye Wen ( Ip Man ) to Bruce Lee ). Hope you will do a video about it soon. To date no one can really define who invented it ... was it Yim Wing Chun ( a lady ) or Leung Zan ( a guy working in the Chinese opera )?

Bruce Lee is a legend. And jeet kune is in a league of its own. However him passing away early in life was a robbery to everyone. But still agree with his philosophy. Most many of martial arts are flowery.

It would be awesome if you add Bajiquan masters such as Li Shuwen and Liu Yunqiao as well.

I highly recommend the TV series called The Legend of Huo Yuanjia (2001) starring Vincent Zhao. In this series Huo Yuanjia is the master of a well known to-be master named Chen Zen, better known for the many remakes movie called Fist of Legend (Jet Li starred in it), which is a remake of Fist of Fury.

Wu Zhong 吴钟 - Bajiquan master, wang ziping.. Li Shuwen ???
Try researching Li ShuWen, he was a master practitioner of the Chinese martial art of Bajiquan or the Body Guard Style. He was known as "God Spear Li" as he was also a master of using the spear. There's also a badass quote called: "I do not know what it's like to hit a man twice."
Shout-out to you guys mentioning Leung Kar Yan aka Beardy in Thundering Mantis! This channel rules!!
There is another. Chan Heung, the creator of the style known as Choy Li Fut, This style of Kung Fu was taught to members of the boxing rebellion against the western invaders.
Great video! Love these! I would love to see a video about other great Taiji masters such Chen Fake and Sun Lutang. But also more modern masters such as Huang Xingxian, Feng Zhiqiang, Ma Yueliang, or Zhu Chun Xuan.

I think Chen Fake should have a film made about him, not only was he one of the greatest martial artists of Republican era China but his name would be so memorable for western audiences. (Spelt Fake and pronounced F......., ). The story of how he impaled a Brigand leader with a blunt pole is just asking for a cinematic adaptation.

@@zzajizz I didn't know about that anecdote.. Awesome! 😆 I'm a Chen style near-master. To me, Chen Fake is the last great Chen Grandmaster. My lineage is Feng Zhiqiang's who was Chen Fake's first line defense when the latter was challenged. He was very good but Chen Fake is just mythical. I'm sad there's no videos of him demonstrating his skills. 😭

Very interesting. Maybe you missed one of the famous masters from the Tibetan White Crane style that had a very famous fight with a Tai Chi master. This fight happened in 1954 between Chen Ke-fu (Tibetan White Crane) and Wu Gongyi (Wu-style Tai Chi). This was my master's master (master Chan).

Wong Fei-Hung had strong connections to the Lama/Pak Hok Pai style as his father was friends with one of the top "Ten Tigers of Guangdong" (Wong Yin Lam ), who happened to be a master of Tibetan Lama KF. The original village Hung Kuen style underwent significant changes due to some of the Lama style techniques Wong Fei-Hung learned under Wong Yin Lam.

Thank you so much, Ben, Jared for extensive research and beautiful videos. In Hong Kong the descendants of Master Luk Chi Fu, and Master Ha Kwo Cheung continue their academies, contemporaries of Master Ip Man, Kwan Tak Hing, Sek Kin. All very passionate about martial arts. I can relate to the many martial arts movies of Wong Kei Ying, Wong Fei Hung, Yim Wing Chun, etc. Love the veteran actors of Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Awesome list. If you make another list, could you add Beggar So & or the other 10 Tigers of Canton? 😎

How about Grand Master Chee Kim Thong? A National Living Treasure of China before he passed away; was made Datuk by the Malaysian Royalty. Trained the Chinese Special Forces during the Japanese invasion and introduced Whu Chu, a southern Sholin style and Wuji, a northern soft form pre-dating Taiji to the West.
Hue fei, Li shu wen, chan heung, ku yu cheung, and last but not least Ypman
Huo Yuan Jai was also play by Kar Lan in Legend of a Fighter! Philip Ko (RIP) played the father 😞
When I visited Taiwan, a Taiwanese friend gave me the Alishan wulong tea. It was tasty, I liked it a lot!
I loved this video! I would love to hear you talk. About Chan Tzi Ching an eagle claw 🦅 Kung Fu master and Leung Jan he was the Wing Chun grandmaster before Yip Man(aka Ip Man).
Great knowledge and video. Great tea info also. Thinking of videos on hung si Quan founder of hung gar the founder of choy lay fut and fung si yu and others. OH and maybe a break down of the ten tigers of Kwan tung part one and two

Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do is also influenced by Filipino Kali through his student, teacher and friend Dan Inosanto.

Really interesting video. My suggestion to add to a part 2 has to be: Xing Yi Quan Master Guo Yunshen. He's not the founder of XYQ, but created the Hebei branch and had a somewhat colourful life.
The fact this guy knows who Yang Lu Chan is, is amazing. Next people should look up Yang Cheng Fu. This guy could throw a rat against a wall so hard it would stick. CRAZEE.
Good video.
I understand the second Master, I also tailor my Muay Thai training for each student i have depending on their personality.
As a lover of Chinese martial arts movies, I thank you for this content
Great that Tang Lang (Wang Lang) Tong Long is mentioned ..I studied Northern Mantis.......
I think 刘晓云 (liu xiao yun) should be in part 2. Famous in the court of the last emperor for his skill with a spear, his students later went on to be body guards for both Chairman Mao & chang kaishek. 陈法科 might be good to look into as well.
Sure, do another video including Yip Man, Chang Dong Sheng (Bao Ding Shuai Jiao), Du Xiu Si and Wan Lai Sheng of Zi Ran Men, maybe the founder of Choy Li Fut since it is such a prominent style. and Li LuoNeng of Xing Yi Quan.
