Ropak, Bway, Encore, Leaktite, Letica, are all manufacturers of buckets and lids. If the bucket and lid aren't made by the same company, you're not going to get the intended seal. I've even found that lids from some companies need to be overly maneuvered to even fit on to a bucket from another company. And, to make matters worse, Lowe's carries 2 brands, and most employees don't even know to tell you to match manufacturers. Great testing!

I got myself food grade for free from a bakery, and it seals well, it's sqaure, and was for lard! I have had oatmeal in them, for years. and put raisin and was fresh till the day i finished the bucket. About 10years later. I kept it in a cool room with no heat ducts. When I moved, I took 6 of them with me. and now store them in garage, cold in winter, and it's cooler in the summer because of the direct the garage faces from my house.

I use home depot buckets and their lids and they work just fine for me. I wouldn't bother with a gamma lid unless I needed to get into the buckets a lot and super easily. Most anything with a silicone gasket like the inner gasket of the gamma lid is useless if you over tighten them because the gasket gets squeezed out as you saw try the gamma lid with out over tightening it and I bet it seals better how ever like I said I wouldn't bother spending the extra money on the gamma lids.

@@richardlloydusa If you will read the Gamma seal lid's label you will see that the company claims it is airtight and watertight. Sounds like false advertising to me. Even for food storage, I'm inclined to purchase the less costly lid at this point. I don't know how to test for air tightness though. I'm assuming that if water can get in or out, so can air. Am I correct?

A food grade pail does not need a bag in it. They are used in the food industry every day. Just wash it first. A peel-off lid like the blue encore is supposed to be water tight. this lid is a failure. However, these lids are designed for retail use and not meant to be banged on during testing. FYI; Paint leaks horribly. Paint has a way of wicking into cracks (by design) so is difficult to seal into a container. Using a leaktite lid on and Encore pail (or visa-versa) is not a fair test either. Pails do not always have standard lids sizes across brands. Most lids with gaskets don't leak. However, rounded rims work better than flat topped rims. Also, keep in mind intended uses for these lids. The peel off lids are designed for repeatability. The orange lid with the gasket is designed more for security. Gamma lids are designed for long term storage but have had issues with gasket deterioration. Bail wire thickness is a non-issue. The thickness difference won't effect performance in this case. More important is pull-out strength which is determine by the container itself.

  • @Gamma2inc

We recommend giving the lid a good spin. When it stops spinning, it's closed. You can give it a bit of a nudge after that, but in this video it was really cranked super tight. We have had some reports of people having to overtighten the lid in order to get the most absolute airtight seal. Totally understandable, but sometimes that puts too much strain on the gasket, which would cause it to break.

+bmwnasher They can be used for general use but you can store food in them if you use 5 gallon mylar food storage bags and oxygen absorbers amzn.to/1GF4ajW then they will protect the food from critters or damage as well as making them easy to stack. You can store dry food in those bags for up to 25 years if it's done correctly. You don't have 5 gallon utility buckets in the UK?

It could just be the gamma lids are sturdier and less prone to bend down. The oxygen absorbers only remove oxygen, which is 20% of the gas inside the bucket, so there's not that much force sucking the lid down. I recommend the mylar with oxygen absorber inside, but then also a couple of absorbers in the bucket but outside the bag. Double layer of oxygen free air. Your food is protected if the bag fails or the bucket seal fails (but not if both fail). You can open one of your buckets and listen closely if there's a hiss of pressure releasing, like when you open a jar of pickles. If so, the oxygen was absorbed and you know your process works. I've never used a work bucket for food storage. I imagine they're not as concerned with making them air tight as a bucket made for food storage would be. I never quite trust the food bucket is actually air tight, and haven't found anyone who definitely knows. I suppose I could seal one and force it underwater and see if it bubbles.

Swapping lids between buckets doesn't make sense as manufacturers normally design a specific lid to fit tightly on a specific pail... there are some slight differences between pails (if you measure with specific equipment, you will see it)... also, as you pointed out at the beginning of your video, those are HDPE pail on american standards... without gasket, those pails are never sealed properly (unlike PP pail that have "natural" sealing, but which is seldom used in North America for pails). Comment from a mold maker from France specialized on pails mold for 50 years exporting worldwide.

Use food buckets. He's right that they cost 2-4 dollars more, but that's nothing if you're setting aside lots of food for a situation when you will really need that food. Mylar bags can fail, and do. Just a pinprick puncture will expose the food to the non-food grade plastic. That's not a problem right away, but if the food is sitting in the bucket for years, it is. And don't assume if the bags "suck down" like a brick that you have no puncture. Food can partially block a pinprick puncture, so all looks well, but if you check a month later, the bag has puffed up because air eventually got in. For that reason, use food grade buckets. Period. Another reason to use food grade is the gasket/seal is better, made for food storage. You can put o2 absorbers in the bucket to remove the oxygen, so if you have a puncture in the bag, it doesn't matter because there's no oxygen in the bucket to get inside the bag. I've never been able to get an expert to state the buckets are totally air tight, but in my experience they seem to be or fail right away. Finally, in a survival situation where you've used the food, you will end up with an empty bucket. If it's food grade, you can use it to store new food you find, haul drinking water, etc., confident in the knowledge that the food and water is safe in the bucket. Use food grade materials for food. Duh. Don't short-cut over 2 or 3 dollars. Matching the right tool to the job is a basic principle. Food. Food-grade bucket. Hello.
