I bought a Brother Laser Printer which included WiFi to connect to the local network. It was the easiest install for a printer I've experienced. Windows 10 detected it automatically on the network and installed the drivers. The device showed up in print menus too. Just a tip for an easy install. ;D Also, in this video, I think you could have configured the WAN port to be bridged to the LAN ports and continued to configure it like you said; therefore gaining back a port on the back of the router. Liked this video.

I actually shot this video three times before I was happy with it and I think toward the end my voice was starting to break. I also noticed a bit of cooling fan noise to as a I have an air conditioner running to keep the room cool so that the 4k camera does not overheat. We are talking about hours of narration on this to get it right. But I am glad that I spent the time doing it. I appreciate your feedback and I will see what I can do to reduce the background noise. Really usefull info. Maybe you mentioned it but I missed it, but it would have been super complete had you mentioned if the secondary router should stay on that mode or be switched to Access Point or Bridge mode. I think it should stay as is, but if you could clarify that it would be awesome. 👌🏻

I purposely left out Access Point or Bridge mode as those are fairly new setting on routers and not all routers would have those options. I wanted to keep it simple and able to be done with any two routers (regardless of their capabilities). I may show how to do it with three or more routers in the future. So the 2nd router is basically a network switch with wifi. Some routers can be configured to use the WAN port as a LAN port so you can have the extra port to use. 👍

I can't connect to my 2nd router after changing the IP adress. I followed your video step by step too. I have used both of my old routers and they both have the end result. DO you have any fixed for this?

I use an Asus router because it supports Open VPN, it is connected to my ISP gateway through the internet port, I am going to switch to this method. Is there any reason for concern/complications with connecting to Nord through the Asus router? Thanks

Do you think I could do the same thing with a Mesh system (Eero) acting as the secondary router. I currently have a new TP-Link 75 (5400) which is 6E capable, and I have a 6E capable Eero mesh system with 5 Eeros in the mesh. I would like to use the the TP Link 6GHz band for UNINTERRUPTED streaming, and the Eero mesh for everyday internet connections for the rest of the house. I can't use the Eero system for uninterrupted streaming since in annoyingly changes channels during the early morning hours without my consent.

Hello there thanks for the setup to router together. Now, can we connect two router together using wi-fi?

How about using the TP-Link AXE5400 DECO as primary router and an Archer AXE 75 (AXE 5400 Wifi 6E Tri-Band) as the secondary, and adding the secondary to the mesh network setup with the DECO? I would like to put the AXE 75 at the far end of the house, but have no ethernet close by and would likely use wifi. My primary TV is at that end and I would like to connect it through the ethernet port out of the AXE 75, and still maintain the One Mesh network setup. Would this seriously degrade the signal strength, if it is even possible? The AXE 75 indicates it is a One Mesh compatible unit so it should work, right? What I DIDN'T want to have to do was to put the AXE 75 back in as my primary and try and figure out how to set up the DECO units as extensions of the mesh network. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I can see its connecting only through the primary router. However when i turn on WiFi my lap top shows then shows the secondary router. I must have missed a step somewhere? any help please?

You're most welcome. Your question is not too clear to me so I will do the best I can. I don't understand what you mean by, "I connect a LAN cable from the secondary router to my lap top which is then not recognized on my lap top.) Not sure what is not being recognized here? Also, I don't understand what you mean, "However when i turn on WiFi my lap top shows then shows the secondary router."? Make sure your two routers are connected LAN port to LAN port as I show in the video. Make sure you have DHCP turned OFF on the secondary router. Make sure you have set the IP address correctly on the second router, as I show on the video. Test your laptop by connecting it to the main router using your LAN cable and WIFI that should work normally. If it does not then the problem lies in the laptop configuration or the LAN cable. You can easily test the LAN cable by plugging it in to the Modem and then connecting it to the WAN port on the router. If you can still surf the Internet after doing so you have a good cable, if you can not the cable is the problem. Lastly you could do a factory reset on your secondary router and follow my video exactly step by step and it should work. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. A few years ago I followed your directions to connect a remote router and it worked fabulously, thank you. However, later out of necessity I had to connect a LTE Network Extender to my primary router so that I could use my cell phone and that seems to have stopped the remote router from functioning. Make sure your secondary router is connected like I show in the video to one of the LAN ports on the primary router using an ethernet cable. Unplug your LTE Network Extender and reboot the secondary router and see if it works without the LTE NE. If it does and it stops working again when you plug the LTE NE then I would suspect that you have an IP address conflict (TWO identical IP addresses) as I explain in the video. Plug the secondary router into your PC by it's self like I show on the video above and turn off the WIFI on the PC. Now log in like I show in the video and change the routers IP client# to a different client number (watch the video to understand). What ever client number you have increase that value by one. So if its 192.168.1.2 change it to 192.168.1.3 then save that configuration, reboot the router, turn the WIFI back on your PC/Laptop and connect the secondary router to the primary just like I show on the video, power it up and test it. Thanks for the video, Richard. I'm curious about something. If you had a situation where you had, let's say (1) two devices (let's say a laptop and a printer) connected to router one, and then (2) turned off the power for router two, and then (3) rebooted router #1; when router one came back up, it would want to give out dynamic IPs to the laptop and printer (since it's configued for DHCP, and because those devices are what it will see). And it's likely to do that on a "first come first serve" basis, correct? So this would mean it would hand out IPs 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. So now -- if you turn on router number two, since it's configured to use 192.168.1.2, this is going to create a conflict with whatever device already got that IP from router one, correct? Could this be solved if we were to give router two a fixed IP from router one? Maybe also by reserving a range for fixed IPs vs dynamic IPs on router one, and then assigning a static IP for router two?

You're most welcome. Great question! Now you're correct that this would cause an IP conflict and it would probably cause an issue getting to secondary router but that's the only problem it would cause, all the other functions router #2 would normally take care of would still be functioning. Here's a couple of ways to get around this: 1. Change the IP address of the secondary router to the highest number available like 192.168.1.254. Most likely if your DHCP server serves from lower to higher there would never be a conflict as it's rare that you would have 254 devices on the same network and the DHCP address range rarely uses the whole range. 2. You could change the DHCP server to a higher Start IP Address like 192.168.1. 20 and also increase the higher range if you require that.(BTW most modern routers start at higher numbers now too) I know Netgear always did the next IP address after the router IP address and I always changed it). Tp-Link starts at 100 and goes to 249. 3. You could also do a DHCP Address Reservation for 192.168.1.2 and bind it to the secondary router then the DHCP server would only ever give 192.168.1.2 to the secondary regardless of whether it was on or off. This a very handy feature for IOT devices like, doorbells, cameras, thermostats etc. as they never need to be hard set to an IP and they always will get the same IP address (I may do a video on this). Hope that helps. Thanks again for the question as I am considering doing a DHCP video (especially the reservation feature) you helped bring it to front of mind for me. I did cover DHCP in my original connecting two routers video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGmFrMRsf5Sfqqw.html but I left it out of this one as I didn't think it was super important to the majority of users and the problem you described would also be rare considering how most routers are configured when they are shipped. Great video, thank you very much for sharing. A quick question. What is the issue of having both routers connected to the internet? I have the current issue. My primary router is provided by my internet provider. They are Plume with only two Ethernet ports. Since I need more ports, I decided to connect my own router between the modem and the router provided by my provider. So, the connection goes from modem to my router to the router provided by the internet provider. For this reason, both routers have internet connection and generate their own independent Wi-Fi that has internet access. So far things seem to be working but I am not sure if it is the right thing to do. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking on replacing my router with an Ethernet splitter but not sure.

If it's working with your current arrangement, I see no reason to modify it. When it no longer serves your needs, then look for an alternative configuration. When you're done setting this up you still have a kludge that is difficult to manage. For $140 you can have 2 soho grade TP Link Omada WIFI access points that use a single UI to configure and manage along with a single set of SSIDs (up to 6) that hand off seamlessly between each access point as you move around.

how to determine which is primary and which is secondary router?

The primary router is the one that is directly connected to your internet connection (DSL,Cable Modem, Fiber Modem etc). Unfortunately the chipset on the R7000P and the R7000 is not fully compatible with the third party firmware that would be able to give you access to the Wireguard VPN configuration. I may do some testing on the Linksys EA8300 and OpenWRT as I believe that Wireguard can be run on that and it's a fairly inexpensive router used on eBay(paid): ebay.us/9MCL3z But do your research prior to purchasing as I said I have not done it yet but it's on my list of experiments to test. You're most welcome. Great question. You would need something called a DSLAM connected to the internet to get those two modems to connect through the telephone jacks. I worked for a Canadian DSL Internet internet provider and we troubleshot DSL modems using those devices. They can tell you the speed, signal strength of the DSL modems when they connect also the distance and line noise between the modem and the DSLAM which was always useful. If you are too far away from the DSLAM you're more likely to have connection issues. Thanks again. All the best.👍😀

We have an old vodafone router and it seems like it’s locked or something. I did everything up to the part pf connecting it to my PC upstairs and whenever i would open a website, the vodafone site pops up and says to connect the activation stick on the router. Annoying! Any tips or something..?

Here's the manual: bit.ly/3PwQO55 I did not see a Bridge mode in it but have a look as you have access to the device. What I see is a seriously Internet provider locked down device. Here are my suggestions: Make sure DHCP is turned off (and it looks like there are several places to do that). Change the WAN DNS server (If possible) to 1.1.1.1 and the LAN DNS server (again if possible) to 1.1.1.1 and see if that works. Last, if none of this works buy used router (An TP-Link Archer C9 or a Netgear R7000) are readily available on the used market for decent pricing. Both are dual band Gigabit Ethernet routers like this Vodaphone. Still wish to hear if you were able to get it configured. I am considering a making a video using alternative hardware to get this done too. Thanks again. All the best.👍😀

Correct. What the world generally calls a "router" is much more than just a router. Double NAT would require two NAT sources. This network only has one therefore double NAT does not exist. The second router is actually only being used as a switch with an access point. Note that I implicitly state that the WAN port should not be used on the secondary router. All routing functions, including Network Address Translation(NAT) are being handled by the primary router only. I really just don’t understand the reasoning for this whole process, because if you have a hard line already run, then a switch at the other end would be ideal as your primary router will be doing DHCP and all the other associated goodies. By the way, there pretty much is no programming required, unless you’re using a managed switch and that’s not part of this discussion. If Wi-Fi were needed, then just adding, an AP (Access Point) would be a simple solution and again - minimal, if any, programming required. 🍺

using two routers seem pointless. why not use a mesh system or extenders. which is far cheaper than another router

For some reason my secondary router will now accept the changes to its IP address.
