5 Events That Will Completely Change The Maps Of The World Before 2100

Ғылым және технология

Throughout Earth's history, different natural events have entirely changed the shape of continents all over the planet. Some of these events are related to geological activity and take several million years.
However, other changes occur in much shorter periods. Some of these occur during a human lifetime, and we could see them before the year 2100.
But what events could bring about such a drastic change in maps worldwide?
Stay with us to find out!
5 Sea level rise
This is perhaps one of the most significant challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, and it has the potential to drastically change the world's maps by 2100.
This phenomenon, driven mainly by climate change, is caused by two fundamental mechanisms: seawater thermal expansion and ice sheets and glaciers melting.
4 Melting Permafrost
Permafrost is a permanently frozen layer of soil found primarily in the Arctic and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its melting has profound implications for the environment, infrastructure, and society.
3 New islands
Although it seemed impossible in the past, we know that the emergence of new islands takes relatively little time.
2.Deserts disappear
This change can occur in two scenarios: an artificial one, caused by human reforestation and engineering projects, and a natural one, caused by the melting of the poles and the advance of the sea inland. Both scenarios have profound implications for the planet's geography.

Funny I saw a photo of the statue of liberty taken 1900 and and one taken 2010, the water level was the same.

@@kennethbowry1521 it's not rising water level to look out for, rather it's everything you choose to ignore that will sink you. Also, sea level was hundreds of feet lower during the younger dryas event which wiped out civilization practically overnight.

Water levels have raised 20cm since 1900, which doesn't sound like a lot but is in fact a fuck ton of water... also we don't know what tims of day those two photos of Statue of Liberty was taken, during high or low tides? There's a lot of context that is easily missed when looking at those photos in isolation.

Great question! People still love living by the ocean for the views and lifestyle, so developers keep building. Some areas have also invested in protections against rising sea levels.

Question. If sea levels are rising, why after 2000+ years are the Roman tidal baths still at sea level?

  • @InsaneCuriosity

    @InsaneCuriosity

Great question! The Roman tidal baths are still at sea level because local conditions, like land movements and tides, have stayed relatively stable. Sea levels are rising, but changes can vary by region.

The last 100 years has resulted in maybe 6-8 inches. And in the next 2000 years, it may rise another 10 feet. So, this is not the crisis that you are making it out to be. And the flooding of desert will reduce that increase.

I wonder if they’ll try to build a dyke/sea wall around New York like The Expanse? It was never directly spoken of in the show but was there to be seen in the show that sea levels had risen and was dealt with by using the sea wall.

It would literally be easier and cheaper to focus on more inland cities and locations rather than trying to hold out the sea. It would cost an insane amount to build a massive sea wall as well as to continuously maintain it, especially against more exrteme weather events. Even then, the potential danger of damage and loss if and when sea defences break just isn't worth it. Just move to higher ground.

New islands will also emerge by flooding - the parts of land that are high enough. Those will be a challenge to reconnect to the grid, shipping will be required to them, and so on.

Awesome video. When the ice caps do melt, sea rose is estimated at 190 feet, and it was a good point in the video that slipped my mind, heat expansion of the ocean possibly could add an additional 10 foot or more to sea level. Current earth temp 13.9c (57f) When the caps melt 48.89c (120f) imagine areas of the Sahara near 82c (180f) people would literally boil and steam to death. But the poles will be near tropical year round. Antarctica is not claimed parole. Get out there now claim a parcel and build on it before the land gets occupied.

I am in favor of creating tunnels to inland basins to channel flood water which would otherwise flood coastal regions. Or more extremely, link some of these basins to the general seas and oceans.
