One thing you (and many others) are forgetting to put into the equation is the cost of a presidency - which is not lower than that of most modern constitutional monarchies. In addition, constitutional monarchs have been trained all their lives for their roles and fulfill them not for personal gain (like some millionaire politicians do or did), but out of a sense of duty and tradition for their nation.

And that's even w/ conservative estimates. The most likely founding-point for the dynasty is Emperor Keitai (or more correctly, his son Emperor Kimmei, who is the 1st Emperor to have historically verifiable dates), rather than Emperor Ojin (who probably existed but may not be ancestor to/belong to the same house as the present dynasty) or Jimmu (who almost nobody believes was a real person). That still puts the founding well-before almost all other extant dynasties. My main source for this is State and Dynasty in Archaic Yamato by Cornelius J. He proved himself as an able negotiator, bringing the stalemate to a close and appointing a new coalition. During the time without a government, the King aptly appointed technocrats to oversee the day to day rule, and his handling of the day to day governance and the tricky constitutional situation won him praise from even the most anti monarchists. However I don’t think it does the Royal Family, the U.K. or the commonwealth any favours people conflate everything, all the time. Regarding the taxpayer situation to UK, the Royal Family has lands that earns money. In the 1700s, George III agreed to surrender the profits of these lands to parliament in exchange for a fixed salary and having his debts removed. The profits contribute to the UK's national budget which means taxes would be lower than they otherwise would be. Another thing to regard is that tourists pay money to see the castles, Tower of London, basically anything that has to do with the Royals. This brings in billions of £ for the UK every year.

I’m Belgian. The monarchy is one of the things that’s keeping the country together. Flanders would be more likely to become independent without them. No, they’re not really beloved, but we keep them as a symbol. They don’t have any real power. We have restricted the money the ‘secondary royals’ receive. Oh, and yes, Flanders is more conservative, but we are not religious anymore. We used to be very catholic, but that changed in the 1960’s. Not many people are still devout catholics. A lot of people only go to church for weddings and funerals. Many people only have their kids baptized and go through communion so they can get married in a church if they want. We were the second country to legalize same-sex marriage, and the fact that gay couples are still not allowed to get married in a catholic church has made the church even less popular recently. My kids aren’t baptized and they go to a catholic school. The majority of the children in school do not go through communion or confirmation. Only about 1 in 5 do. By the way, Filip used to be brutally mocked when he was still a prince. One thing that has been well-received, is that Elisabeth is the first female heir to the throne and Belgium could finally have it’s first Queen. Previously, only male heirs could inherit the throne.

Very True. @matthewmacpherson5071 In fact the line that currently sits on the throne was the descended from the Scottish Monarchy. It is the British Monarchy now you are correct. Force of habit as I love the English monarchy's history. But if we are to be specific then I would agree. British. This line descends from Henry VII though Mary Queen of Scotts and her decedents. Then After Queen Anne I (whom the British Empire was forged under) went to the house of Hanover. which claimed the British Throne through Elizabeth Stuart daughter of King James VI and I. To which we get the current monarchy today - Which is actually the house of Saxe-coburg and gotha due to Queen Victoria's marriage to Albert but had its name changed to Windsor during WW1.

I am not british, but I think they didn't like Harry's actual Plan. In his very First Statement in january 2020 he wrote, that he and Meghan wanted to Work parttime as royals and only take some of the Responsibilities, while only forgoe the taxpayers money which is only 5 % of their income. So they only wanted to work half of the time and still be payed 95% while looking to establish a new kind of income at the same time. That's quite unfair for all the other fullworking royals who would have to take over some of Harry and Meghan's Responsibilities along with their own workload while only getting paid just a little better. That's Why the Queen than stepped in. The taxpayers where also angry because they spend a lot money on the wedding and the renovations of frogmore Cottage, only for them to not take their Responsibilities seriously. And there also some rules that with their HRH Titles they always represent the royals publicly and that means that certain contracts and jobs with Not Royal-confirm Organisations and firms like netflix or spottify are not allowed, it's called conflict of interest. Because these jobs are some sort of public jobs, so how could they represent them and the royals at the same time? That's why they are Not allowed to use the HER Titles. Sorry for the bad grammar :D

Just a few comments on your information for the UK Monarchy, I can't comment on the others so much as I am from the UK myself. The comments are pretty much what a lot of Americans don't understand about UK history, so it's not just you! The UK Monarchy itself has only existed since 1707 with the formal Union of the Scottish and English thrones through the respective Acts of Union of each parliament. From 1603 to 1707 (excusing the interregnum), the two crowns rested on one head from the time in 1603 when James VI of Scotland took the English throne. When referring back to the establishment of the UK Monarchy you are using the generally accepted date of the first Monarch of all England. What you should do to correct this is use the date of the first generally accepted King of all Scotland, that being Kenneth I MacAlpin in 843. Of the two royal lines, the Scottish one is senior in the UK system. You could also potentially look into the older Irish and Welsh royal dyansties, but both are really quite detailed in their own way.

One point about the Dutch. The monarchy was established in 1815, not in 1581. We were a republic, not a monarchy. The husband to queen Victoria, was brother to the Belgian king. In WW1, the Belgian army stopped the Germans at the Ijzer river, allowing time for the alied forces to gather. In WW2, once again the Belgian forces held up the German forces long enough to allow the massive Brittish force at the coast to escape, which would otherwise have been capured, undoubtedly changing the course of the war. The European Union was formed out of the cooperation between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. Also the headquarters of NATO are in Belgium. I really don’t agree that the UK is the second most likely to abolish its monarchy. Despite its scandals it remains popular and has done through centuries of scandals. I also don’t think Elizabeth’s popularity was affected by her protecting her own interests. And I disagree with the 0 points for cost thing because it feels like you completely ignored how cheap it is per person just because it’s the most expensive overall. And it’s definitely more historically significant than you let on considering it’s one of the oldest. I also think there is a major roadblock to change in the fact that the government is very much in favour of monarchy and would probably be very reluctant to hold a referendum (look how it drags its heels for Scottish independence referendums). I would personally give 2 points to the Queen, 0 to the family, 1 to the cost for taxpayers, 2 for historical significance, 0 to the happiness of the populace (though I personally wouldn’t use this score at all since happiness is based on far more than government/monarchy) and 1 to roadblocks for change giving a total score of 6. That’s just my perspective though and I respect your video.

This “cost to the taxpayer” issue is, in my opinion, severely misunderstood - at least with respect to the British monarchy. There is no money “siphoned off” from tax revenue. That’s utter nonsense. The income of the royal family is a percentage of the revenue earned from their lands, estates, and other holdings. The government at regular intervals appraises how much of the revenue earned from Crown properties should be given to the family, this is usually between 25% to 30%, if I’m not mistaken. In essence they are taxed at about 70%. And one must note that most of the Royals’ spending goes to paying their staff - creating employment and injecting the money back into the economy; take into account the tourism they promote and you’ll see that the UK is MUCH better off economically with the monarchy intact. This idea of being paid out of the peoples’ pockets is a NON-ISSUE! The only real issue would be the image of inequality and the place of titles and social hierarchicy in a modern world.

IMO King Felipe and Princess Leonor of Spain are such a dynamic father-daughter duo. King Felipe is a sensible king and he's been working hard to mend the problems. Princess Leonor also shows so much potential. She's so sweet and well-mannered. Such a very poise young lady. She takes on many languages and becomes such a good ambassador of her country & people. I think Princess Leonor's gonna represent Spain well in the the near future. Plus, the dowager Queen Sophia has also been working tirelessly through her 40 years as a queen consort to the betterment of the institution. I think they deserve more credits.

Plus even though King Emeritus Juan Carlos is not what one may consider a good man, he is however without doubt an important for his role in transitioning post-Franco Spain to the modern kingdom of today. He will be judged (by modern standards) as a great king by history. I think it would’ve been more accurate to use the actual procedures of each country and assess the difficulty.

It is interesting to delve into the backgrounds of many of the crowned and uncrowned head of Royal Families. Many, like Otto von Habsburg have been effective members of the European parliament, some have been experts in scientific subjects and one was an expert on botany. Nearly all of them have an area of expertise as do their children. Unfortunately sometimes people like Princess Ann have been held back by their public persona such as when it was not thought 'suitable' for her to be in the Olympic Equestrian Team. King Charles has managed The Duchy of Cornwall brilliantly and Prince Philip , who was given the job when his wife became monarch, of managing the Royal Estates. He admiited that although sometimes they had to run down to Tesco's, by and large the royal household provided all the food and goods for everyone including the RF from the estates. No mean feat!

@@alimohammad1934 might as well throw a few facts in here. The presidential salary is $400,000 per annum (taxable as the highest tax bracket). The ex presidential pension, according to the Former Presidents Act (1958), is equal to that of a current cabinet member (now $219,200 per annum, also taxable). Nothing extra for the first lady, unless he dies first, then and only then will she get a (taxable) pension of $20,000 per annum IF she renounces other statutory pensions. So right now there are five former presidents alive (Carter, Clinton, Bush 2, Obama, Trump). The wives of these presidents are the only first ladies alive; so none of them are collecting the $20,000 widow's pension since they're not widows, yet. Children don't get anything. Then there is the fact that the President has only one residence, in the capital, as well as a small "retreat" in Maryland. I am not sure how many residences the royal family owns, but it's a lot more, and the British taxpayer is paying upkeep and security on all of them. Do you have any figures on the security, residences and salaries for the British royal family as a whole? I'd be interested to find out. I wouldn't be surprised to find the British taxpayers are giving to the Crown, and all its members, and their residences) no less than we're giving to our Presidency, and all its former and current members.
