Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson

King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Their relationship has long been lauded as a royal fairytale. But there was a lot more going on. Wallis never really liked Edward but became trapped by her own ambition. And Edward, desperate to find any mode of escaping the insurmountable pressure of his birth rite, became obsessed with the woman who dominated him. And they were both Nazi sympathizers. The abdication of a King who wasn’t allowed by the church to marry a divorced woman was not nearly that simple. And the crisis that almost ended the British monarchy likely saved it in the end...

@@markbenjamin1703 I don’t know if it would have saved lives in numbers. Some who died may have lived but a lot who lived probably would have died. As Edward was openly anti semitic and had nothing against the extermination of the Jewish population, many more would have died in the concentration camps and more land would have been occupied by nazi Germany. Also if the English would have supported the Japanese in the war it would have been the and of east Asia as we know it. As Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia where basically slave colonies occupied by Japan they would probably have stayed that way for a long time. Also with England having territories in the area at the time, if they would have allied with the Japanese and perhaps given them Hong Kong and Singapore (then British territories) the Japanese would have gotten a stable strong hold and advanced in to China, Tebet and Mongolia and committed more war atrocities against the population (just look up the Nanjing massacre if you want examples). And remember that the US was not the strongest nation at the time, Britten was. It was WW2 that made American the military super power it is today by the help of the European alias. So if the UK and the commonwealth would have allied with Germany and Japan, millions more would have died, most of Europe would be speaking german, the jewish religion would almost if not completely be whipped out, most East Asian countries would speak japanese, most of the other asian countries culture would be destroyed like palaces, monuments and heritage. Which means no great wall, no forbidden city (which there where plans from the Japanese to destroy), no Angkor wat, no thousand year old Joseon palaces. All culture and history that was not Japanese would be gone, as was the plan if they weren’t stopped. Yes we probably wouldn’t have had Starlins crazy ass which would have been great but communism was already an idea in motion at that time, almost a century old so taking down Russia wouldn’t have done much in abolishing communism as a political concept. So yes we got a lot of bad but not near as much bad as if the Nazis had gotten their way.

I always laugh when Edward and Wallis are held up as this great romance. He was needy due to a childhood deprived of parental affection due to cold, dysfunctional parents, and she just wanted the luxury of being a king's mistress. He started to believe he was in love with her to the point of obsession, but she honestly wasn't that into him. She bawled on a couch in France during his speech about the abdication because she was completely locked into it now. There's no leaving a man who gave up a throne for you. But she definitely cheated on him. I'm not even talking about the Ribbentrop rumors--it was way later on. They're a cautionary tale, not a romantic one.

Most historians would not rate George VI that highly. He was a diffident, nervous man buttressed by his wife, whose ability to rally British resistance made Hitler call her the most dangerous woman in Europe. George smoked and worried himself to death. I'd rate him beta-plus- a constitutionalist, 'modern' sovereign who respected the new 20C democratic norms and did not meddle in politics or military strategy. Probably the optimal head of state for a country that needed unity in 1940-45 more than at most time; an inoffensive symbolic figure.

You forgot to mention how, when Edward was on his death bed, Wallis never even bothered to spend time with him despite him constantly calling out for her. When he was dying he saw her twice: the first night he was bed bound (three weeks before he died), and the night he died. Not how a woman who truly loves her husband would act. She jealously insulted George VI's wife, Queen Elizabeth (both of whom were busy supporting the British people and raising the country's morale during the war) by making fun of her body, and criticising how much she seemed to enjoy being queen (even though Elizabeth, like George VI, never wanted to become the monarch in the first place, but carried out her duties of supporting her husband and country anyway). A truly nasty, selfish woman. Nothing great or romantic about their "love" story at all (if it can even be called a love story). She shouldn't have been given the respect, dignity, or honour of being financially supported by Queen Elizabeth II and buried on royal ground, or of the Queen Mother attending her funeral. The royal family showed both David and Wallis more mercy than they deserved.

I always found it fitting that during WW2 the defeat of Nazis, who were obsessed with physical perfection, came at the hands of people who were physically flawed but had extraordinary moral strength. In the USA the President was wheelchair bound, would possibly have been sent to a concentration camp with other disabled people if he had been a citizen under Nazi occupation, but his disability gave him insights into the underprivileged and he is easily my most admired POTUS. In Britain they removed their physically handsome but selfishly amoral King for a King who was a shy stutterer who did his duty even though it led to his early death (he smoked to calm his nerves leading to lung cancer). That new King refused to leave London throughout the war so he could be with his people, even when Buckingham Palace was being hit with bombs. My grandparents lived in London throughout the war, my grandmother said this single act as well as seeing him tour bomb sites and comfort people contributed greatly to their determination to never surrender and never lose hope. Edward was sent to the Bahamas to stop him undermining the war effort or (worse case scenario) being installed as monarch if Hitler invaded.

She realized she loved him and suddenly was stuck with Edward, she thought she couldn't get out of it anymore after he decided to abdicate for her.

Well, it wasn’t that she upset about him having an affair, because she sent the girl to “satisfy his needs” in her place. She just didn’t expect those two to fall in love. Which makes sense, her husband sent her to Edward to satisfy his needs and extort wealth from him, but Wallis never fell in love. So she’d expect her husband to feel the same (that is, use people but never love them). It just didn’t work like that.

Well, there's impotent & sterile. You can be sterile & not be impotent, but being impotent *generally* means you're *also* sterile. TBH I don't think David was either one of those; families believed what they wanted to believe about their 'black sheep'; Caroline of Ansbach *desperately* believed her son Frederick Lewis was impotent, despite all evidence to the contrary, b/c she hated him *that* much. Louis, duke of Orléans believed his son (the confusingly-named Louis-Philippe I, duke of Orléans) believed his son was incapable of fathering children, & refused to acknowledge any of his grandchildren as his own blood, despite the fact said grandchildren bore a pretty good family resemblance to their father. IMO 18th, 19th, & 20th Royals were pretty often stupid ppl. so take what they have to say about themselves w/ a grain of salt.

I had gathered that the bloom fell off the rose of romance pretty quickly (for Wallis, at least, from some of her later comments), but I never knew that it was never really there to begin with! She really painted herself into a corner, almost an Anne Boleyn kind of figure...she didn't lose her head, but she did lose her life in a way. I am a distant cousin through my matrilineal line and her father's family. My 6x great grandfather was a Warfield, his own mother was a Sewell, both founding families of Baltimore. Despite him moving to the midwest in the 1830s, the families apparently stayed in touch until my own grandmother's mother and grandmother died (1946 and 1953 respectively). So, it was known to me as a child that I was somehow related to Wallis, but not the how. On New Year's Eve 2020 I got home from parties and for some reason to see how far I could trace my matrilineal line just by internet searching, and that's how far I got. My mom made the connection when she saw my little scrap of paper tracing us back with the names and dates.

There are a lot of what ifs in history, but I think even if Edward did become king, (or married Wallis), the crown would still find its way to Elizabeth. Not only was Wallis unable to have children, but according to a biographer and testimony, Edward suffered a childhood illness that wasn't well treated, and the side effect rendered him impotent. So even if would be king, his reign still wouldn't have lasted that long, and Elizabeth would still end up being Queen. Now the outcome of WW2 would have been very different, if he did become King....
