5 Emergency Meals for SHTF- A Stress-free way to feed your family when the grid goes down!

🙏 Our prayers go out to those affected by the terrible tornadoes and storms! Everyone stay safe and prepared! 🙏
When a crisis hits, the last thing you want to have to think about is preparing a meal to feed your family. Putting together a few emergency meal kits can take some of that stress off your shoulders when it’s most critical. Having everything together in one package means you don’t have to hunt around for ingredients, and you can easily grab a meal to take with you if needed, or even give to another family in need.

I really love these meal kit videos! Iived in Texas for a few years, and the chili on the fritios was called frito pie! Was served in the bag at skating rinks and bowling allies, every place. (That was the 1970's)

Another great idea. Plus putting the items in a sealed plastic bag will keep items dry and dirt free if a window breaks during a storm, roof leaks, flooding…your emergency food is safe. I just bought the book “It’s in the bag” so many meal ideas.

I love these and will add them to my list. One other thing you could do to add a little variety is, instead of the taco boats, use tortillas. A can of chili with beans, cheese and salsa and you can make burritos. You can open the can of chili and heat it directly over a fire or low heat. Hand wipes to "wash" your hands.

I think these would be great for traveling on a budget. That much food in a restaurant would be so expensive. Most hotels have microwaves. And you don’t have to go out after a long day of travel or activities.

I put a box of Stove Top (or Walmart brand) stuffing in my bag, with a can of chicken or turkey, and a small can of chicken broth. I also add a jar of chicken or turkey gravy, and a can of green beans. You can put a small pack of French fried onions for the top, if desired. This makes a delicious chicken and dressing casserole. I use the chicken broth, instead of water, to make the stuffing. Drain the green beans, and you could use that liquid, too. You could use butter powder to make the stuffing, but I found that it does not really need butter to taste fine. This is best eaten warm, but you could eat it cold, in an emergency.

It is! Imagine also that if a friend or loved one has any type of personal emergency, you can grab this and go visit them to help them not have to think about lunch or dinner. often times if there's an emergency, say an adult or child breaks a bone and has to get rushed to the ER right before dinner, or if a friend goes through a breakup or job loss, or a death in the family. It's not a warm casserole, but these meals will be ready to go and it'll help avoid the need to spend money of to-go food.

That's awesome! What a great idea! It's kind of interesting, years ago my Mr. Wicked Prepared drove OTR, and he had he wished he had thought of that back then. He also has thought the Jar Meals I make now would have worked well back when he was on the road. I wonder if that's something that would work for you folks? You would need a way to heat them .. a hot plate or probably even a microwave. But it's not really "cooking" and there's very little cleanup. Check out this playlist: Meals in a Jar: kzread.info/head/PL-sp4L-Y4c5Dc1QEaj9oNKrGBH5MetPJd It might be something you'd be interested in 😊

Thanks for sharing! I have a lot of meal kits for emergencies made, and it gives me such peace of mind. I put together a bunch of ones to eat cold, but I did several to warm up. (We can just boil water or cook outside, if we need to.) Invest in some camping equipment for cooking, or make your own. You can make a little "stove" with a tuna can and some oil. My son made a little solar oven with bricks. Search online for how the Boy Scouts cook outside. You could always build a fire. I know that the purpose of these emergency meals is to be able to eat them cold, if it is really an emergency, but learn NOW how to make them warm. If you have time, and are able, preparing and eating a hot meal in a crisis is a VERY valuable and comforting thing! I just found this channel, and it's great. Thank you!!

Great content! Might want to consider a knife in the spam bag to cut it up. For the kits where you mix things might consider adding another folded empty zip bag to use as the mixing bowl. /I have similar kits that include a breakfast as well. /For the fritos taco bags, cut the bag on the long side. Much easier bowl to hold. (One of the gals at work did this for our taco in a bag fundraiser-thought it was a great hack. ) /I keep a large tote bag in my pantry in the event I need to grab n go. My food kits can easily be tossed in and I know everything I need is in them. I also keep extra crackers, the individual servings of pnbutter and my bread on the same shelf so those items can be dumped in the tote in seconds. You just never know when you have to leave quickly. Tfs! Great video!!

Thanks for all the great ideas Emila! I can't believe I didn't think of the knife for the spam. I think a plastic knife would do the trick so I'll throw one in there. I guess in a pinch the handle of one of the forks would probably have worked but now I'll have the knife!

My kit includes a box of plastic flatware, paper bowls , saucer, plates, and 2 sizes of cups. ( one is perfect for desert and one is for drinks, I didn't get hot cups because I use camping steel cups for hot drinks and soup.)also a single roll of paper towels is useful.

@@wickedprepared I come from the South Carolina coast line and every year during hurricane season we usually lose electricity. When your freezer and fridge are struggling to stay cold from lack of electric, you pretty much leave the doors closed to preserve the cold and eat out of the pantry while you wait for your power to be restored or your entire freezer full of food to thaw out while in the freezer which ever comes first. Since you've given me so many yummy non-spoiling pantry meal ideas I wanted to give you one of my favs with a so many different variations that its my go to when the electric goes out yearly. It does require some water which I keep in storage and I cook it over a propane camping stove, but sometimes you just need a nice hot, harty meal when there's a hurricane bearing down on you dumping tons of cold water in the form of rain that's attacking you LITERALLY from any angle you can imagine. I call it my ALL IN POTATOES because its such a simple and delicious pantry meal. · Pkt of (Au Gratin/Scalloped) potatoes · Can of cream of (celery/mushroom/chicken) soup to substitute water with in potatoes · Can or jar of Mushroom/asparagus · One protein. Choose from: · Canned chicken/turkey/tuna ·Or Vienna Sausages/cut summer sausage/frozen Sausage · Or beef · Cajun/Chili powder to flavor · Salt & pepper to flavor Just combine all ingredients in a boiling pan with the cooking potatoes. To save on water usage you can just pour all your fluids from the cans or jars of food in to cook the potatoes in. Add the delicate veggies at very end to heat so that you avoid serious decomposition issues with the asparagus. Stir and serve. It is cheap, pantry stable, easy to cook, super filling and so so yummy 😋 The thing I love the best about it is that you can adjust the size of the meal for the number of people by using less of the potato packet and buying individual size canned servings.

Great meal ideas. For the pasta salad, I would use canned, or packet, chicken, turkey, diced ham, salmon or tuna. Also, on the bagged meals that you like to add Media Crema, you might consider using freeze dried powdered sour cream (just add a little water when ready to prep meal).

Thank you so much for this! I am stocking my pantry but don’t want just beans and rice. I have a couple other recipes that I thought of that would work. I’m going to add my dad’s chicken tortilla soup recipe, pizza hotdish and a quick corn chowder recipe. I have to play with the last 2. The quick chowder needs 3 cups of milk so I have an idea to substitute that with (I have powdered milk but want to save it).

Those sound like awesome additions! For the chowder, I suggest checking out Nestle's Media Crema. It's canned light cream you can find in the Hispanic section of the grocery store, some Walmarts, or on Amazon. I talked about it in one of my hauls but I can't remember which one! If you can't find that I'll bet regular canned evaporated whole milk would work as well!

Once you prep for more than a day you need to consider a heat source. If you are away from public water supply, or it's damaged, you could need to boil water to sanitise it. Actually you can survive for several days without food, but a day without water is the start of a decline. Five days without water is life threatening. Once the power goes off you have only the water in your header tank, or none at all.

Those are also great ideas Maria, thank you! I'll have to experiment with the lemon powder for the sour cream if that works it would be so much easier!

@@wickedprepared it’s pure lemon powder that my daughter gets in little packets, like sugar or sweetener. Other citrus is available as well. I love your ideas for no cooking. I can see a pizza “lunchable” working well, too. Kids eat those without heating. Might have to be Parmesan for the cheese.
