The third one is being used incorrectly. You're supposed to hold onto the top ball when dropping the weighted sliding ball. If you hold onto the cup and egg (like in the video) you dampen the transfer of energy of the cup rim to the egg shell.

Great video. Fairly late in life I have discovered the pleasure of eating soft boiled eggs. I'm old enough to remember seeing people using egg cups and dipping their toast slices into the soft boiled eggs. But today, at least here in the southern U. S. you don't really see folks eating soft boiled eggs like this anymore. So with such a lack of people still knowledgeable about the practice. Videos like yours are a blessing. Thank you.

Funny, I have a scissor one like the first two you tested. For me it works a treat and I can remove the top in one go without having to get a knife. I gently press down on the sides of it with one hand while the other hand cuts. That bit of pressure lets the teeth get a grip to bite and then pry off the top fairly cleanly.

I have always cracked my egg with a spoon and end up with little bits of shell inside the egg which are fiddly to remove. I was in a shop today and saw an egg cutter for the first time. I didn't know they existed. The illustration showed a perfectly topped egg, but I was wondering how effective it really was. Thanks to your review I now know and can purchase one.

HI Gary thanks for that. the long one very good for me. I find however that the dropping weight may require a second drop however what I do is just give the dropping motion a bit of assistance by sort of pushing it down quicker than the normal drop and this works 4/5 times. eric perth

Great idea Garry. I have used the scissor-type for many years. It does not work if you don't whack the egg first. The egg shell is a wonder of nature and will resist the spikes unless it is weakened first. I must have perfectly boiled soft eggs and you stop them cooking by whacking them on the head with a spoon to let the steam out. Chefs drop them in iced water so they don't have to crack the egg. I like the spring loaded one because it is an elegant addition to my elegant breakfast array. I shall buy one.

Greetings Garry, from Alberta, Canada. We just got the spring loaded (the one your grandkids use) as a gift. We like it too, but don't forget to tell your public that it is the combination of a very sharp edge on the inside of the "cup" and the "vibration" from the "spring loaded" , or the movement of the "dropped" weight, that actually does the cutting. Mine is quite sharp, so caution!! It also doesn't work as well on medium eggs.

The last egg-topper in the video - the spring-loaded one (from Lakeland) - works very well but I have had to return EACH one in turn to the shop because the shock of the egg topper's action eventually destroys the weld attaching the ball to the sprung-loaded rod. I thought it was a batch problem but having been returning them over the last 6 months to the shop I realize the problem is intrinsic to the engineering. A weld is not sufficient to secure the ball - it should be bolted in place. Oh well.

Thanks Gary!! I’m having a good laugh at myself. Just made soft boiled eggs to use my new egg shell cutter thingy (the one you like best). It was my second try at it and same thing happened. I couldn’t get the topper off the egg without collapsing the shell into the egg! Now, if only I had looked up how to do this earlier and found your video, I would have known to use a knife!!😂🤪 (I thought by some magic this cutter was supposed to crack and lift the top of the shell off instead of suctioning itself to the whole egg!) Maybe you should mention the knife part for any other dunces out there like me who don’t have a clue about proper egg de-shelling!

Hi, you asked for comments if you are using some of them "totally wrong". You are indeed using the two scissor types wrong. And very wrong I could add. The scissors work perfectly, and are the fastest and cleanest ones to use. Just remember to (1) use the scissors on the pointed side of the egg, (2) secure the scissors onto the egg with the other hand while you are clipping, (3) keep the scissors closed so that you take away the top of the egg when you are lifting the scissors away. That is: You never have to use your fingers to remove the shell.

The first one, which you say: " chuck it in the rubbish bin, waste of time", works perfectly if you do it properly. My wife and I have been using the exact same device for about 10 years or more. It works just fine. You use a slight amount of downward pressure to prevent the device from sliding up on the curvature of the egg as you squeeze. The second one, which you also regard as useless, will also work exactly the same if you do it properly.

I have always enjoyed soft-boiled eggs, when out to breakfast, but never attempted to fix one at home. All the recipes I read seemed like too much trouble. While on a family visit, recently, we were discussing the differences between store bought eggs, and the fresh laid eggs, as my Daughter-in-law's 9 chickens are starting to produce more and more eggs. I mentioned, during the conversation, that I love soft boiled eggs and that if there were a simple way to fix them, I would enjoy them more often. Well........making a short story longer, my DIL remembered my comment. Yesterday, for Christmas, one of my gifts from her and my Son, was an egg topper. Folks, I am here to tell you! If you are looking for the right egg topper this, is it. As I indicated, I have never tried preparing a soft-boiled egg at home because it looked like a pain in the butt, and when it comes to cooking, I like things simple!! Being a virgin soft-boiled egg chef, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I produce two perfectly cooked and topped soft-boiled eggs. I even used one store bought egg and one two-day old eggs. Listen, if you enjoy soft-boiled eggs, do yourself a favor and go out and purchase the 'EPARE" premium egg topper set. I have no idea what they cost, but whatever the price, it's worth it!! It even has a "Limited Lifetime Warranty"!! Beat that!!!!!! Hey, just my experience and my opinion!!! Have you ever tried "Spatchcocking a Turkey or a Chicken"??????????

  • @GarryPurcell

Glad you have discovered soft boiled eggs. The brand you recommend, and my personal favourite, are are basically the same, apart from the brand name. To answer your question: Have you ever tried "Spatchcocking a Turkey or a Chicken" No I haven't, I tend to butterfly the fillets, due to it being easier, than doing the process required for Spatchcocking, but might give it a go to see if I can.

Regarding the first one shown, I had the plastic version for about 7 years and replaced it recently with the stainless steel model. Quite right it was too small and discarded it. I never thought to file out the opening as was suggested.

Nice video. But I think you used the first 2 crackers the wrong way. You should apply some pressure on the cracker, in order to not let it slip off the egg surface. I have been using the first one, the metal one, for about 5 years, without any problem. But now the spring inside is broken, and I decided to buy No. 4, see what it will bring me. Thanks for the video.

Re the first ones being too small: I had the same problem when I first got them a few years ago, the solution is to use a half-round file to make the seat on one side of the teeth bigger so it fits further onto the egg. Just file at a 45 degree angle to avoid scaping the teeth. Voila, they are perfect! I love them and I mostly use them on uncooked eggs as a sure-fire way to avoid breaking yolks.

Non of these would work on quail eggs, you can get quail egg scissors for 1€ that do a great job. The last one, yep cuts the shell. But it is supposed to lift the shell off completely, which it doesn't do on hot/warm eggs. If you have to use a knife after, there is no point paying 10€ plus just to cut the shell. Decking mental! Please save your money.
