    This was an excellent presentation. I worked in an art gallery as a custom framer and you gave great advice. I would add that you should always add bumpons to the frame, use 2 picture hangars for large pieces, and consider not using glass for large pictures - ultra-violet coated acrylic will save you a lot of trouble.

    @@PoshPennies thank you for these tips. I have a big clock 60 cm or 23-24’’ in diameter. Can I apply the same tips to hang it on the wall like the art work? I want to hang two big frames near it as well since it is the only wall in my living room that allows me to hang something (the rest of the walls have big windows, big doors)

    Hi...love your channel....this is a great subject! My father taught me when I was a teenager how to properly hang artwork. I live in a home with 9.5-10’ ceilings....I have one spot right now I am just stuck on🤔 When you walk through our front door the foyer is odd in that there is about 6’ and you meet our stairs that are open to the right with a narrow hallway that ends with a closet which used to be an ugly bifold door which is now a regular size door which is legitimately old and has a glass top with a pretty frosted decoration in the center.....we added shelves to the inside that I can open and close from inside the closet ( it’s a deep coat closet) that fixed that problem! I can fit a narrow buffet in the Hall with a print above it.....now I have a huge wall to the left as you go up the stairs.....basically opens 2 stories. It’s kind of hard to figure right height bc you are so close to the wall. I have five grandchildren and I was thinking of having photos of each there...would you mount them in a stair step fashion or in some sort of grouping? So sorry for my book to get to my question! We also have a 5’x4’ chunky pretty floral we just took out our bedroom...what are your thoughts.,,,any advice would be appreciated 😊kim

    I see so many pics of art work or mirrors just sitting on the mantel. I wasn't sure that I liked that and now I know I don't. I had finally found a pic of Manhattan...a nice watercolor with glass. One day I heard a loud crash, as it hit the floor, shattering the glass and breaking the frame. I spent more to get it re-framed than what I paid for the pic. No more leaning on anything! Expensive mistake!

    Interestingly, how low or high a picture hangs tends to also be connected to socioeconomic status. The higher the economic level, the lower pictures hang, and vice-versa, in the modern era. This has been observed not only in the western world but also in other regions. I’ve not come across an explanation as to why this is the case, but I’ve observed this consistently in my travels.

    My best guess: If you don't have the funds to easily replace accidentally damaged art, you will subconsciously hang it higher up (out of harm's way). Our art sadly has to hang quite high right now as we lack the funds for a nanny to supervise our very active toddler... we also don't have space to store it any other way till the kid is older and (hopefully) calmer, so for now we are stuck like that.

  • @wakingtheworld

    @wakingtheworld

    I used plastic hanging hooks (can't recall the make... and these are in the UK) which have 4 short pins protruding from them. They bang happily into brick AND if you do need to remove them, wiggle them free, tap the pins back and you're ready to go again. Minimal damage to walls too. Just 4 wee holes to fill! P.S. I've used masonry nails for brick walls too. They work!

    Ok height exceptions in my house are above the fireplace mantle large wood sculpture or metal sculpture, above doorways small wood sculptures just for fun like a rose. It will look like it is sitting on top of the door. Also have 2 story ceiling and triangle shape so I have a flock of wood geese flying up to the ceiling in formation with wings in the correct position as they take off (they are numbered). Also on the 2nd story another large wood carving of birds above the pictures below. This is actually the main entrance. The stairs are seen from the front door and are hard to place pictures on because the pictures go up the wall as you walk and some are on the 2nd story where you view them from the rail at eye level. They all match in color and frames because they are the same artist (Kincaid who uses only certain colors) to make them tie together but they are different sizes. Otherwise yes they are all at eye level and the long hallway uses black and white pictures only to make them more cohesive.

    Help please? Smallish family room. One large print over the sofa sets the color scheme and is definitely southwestern. It’s in a large brown wood frame with glass over the print. I need a picture for another wall. The wall isn’t as big as the sofa wall so I can get away with a smaller picture. I like boho southwestern, so I’m drawn to abstract southwestern theme. Can’t decide what to do. Thought I should stick with the color scheme. Should I match the frame? Didn’t know if I could get an unframed canvas. Doesn’t seem like that would be a good fit with a framed print in the room.

    Generally the rule with Etsy printables is if you are buying/printing for personal use, there is absolutely no problem with that. So long as you're not reselling the file or printing and reselling, it's totally fine. Each seller usually has their own terms laid out as well, if you're ever curious, but that's the gist of how it works.

    One comment if you live in an earthquake zone like LA only hang a canvas or something like a rug above your bed so you are not injured in a quake. Canvas or even a vinyl print can be stretched and stapled on a cheap wood frame to hang. I just wash the canvas when I think it is too dusty. Rugs can be great abstracts and hung from a wood frame.
