Norwegian here, great discription of the style. One thing to note if you want a scandy look. We usually stick to cool tones, blues, greens and greys are popular. Probably due to the fact that the colours around us are naturally more cool due to the cloudy grey weather, stone/mountains, green trees, blue waters etc. We don't have a lot of bright colours or warm tones. If warm colours are used then it's pretty much always a deep rich tone, like mustard yellow (which is seen on some old houses) or burgundy as accent colours for an example. Even in fashion most people (especially here in Norway) wear a lot of black, grey and blue. Most scandinavians naturally follow janteloven and are not flashy or super bold, even rich people don't brag about it

I'm Norwegian too, and I absolutely HATE this style. It's so cold and sterile. Bland.

Not a Scandinavian, but a Nordic person here... Yes, I'm not a great fan of Scandi style either, to be honest. It's too sterile. Nevertheless, it is definitely something to learn from, and this style and character is a great contrast to the North American style which is a lot about "More! Bigger! Fancier! more luxurious!" One thing that is behind the Scandinavian style is the rather modest and quiet/shy nature of the Scandinavians (and North-Europeans people as a whole). It is not customary in the North of Europe to show off your wealth. Also, we are practical. A chair is a chair. We should just be able to sit on it. That's it. Hence such white and simple, sleek, iconic IKEA chairs which simply perform the function.
I enjoyed this video very much. Simple and straight forward. Where I do disagree with you is on the sense that Scandinavian people don't have or build clutter. I have spent 4 summers (prior to COVID) in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland and what I had found in every home we rented was THAT ROOM where they kept all the over flow stuff. racks of candles, pelts, canisters of teas, dishtowels, blankets, shoes, tools and various knick-knacks. I believe it is more of a seasonal room since they have more cold or cooler days than hot and more dark than light most of the year. Also many apartments in Stockholm came with a holding area in the "basement" and they had bikes, tires, baskets, etc. So from what I have seen the Scandi minimalism does NOT mean monkish. They just are fantastic at making the spaces they occupy be the warmest and most welcoming by making sure the people are center stage and not the things. I WOULD LOVE (NOT YELLING) FOR YOU TO MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT WINDOWSILLS AND TERRACES. In Sweden every home had deep sills and were curated with lovely items, music speakers, busts, some plants lots of Svenskt Tenn jars, cookbooks, and of course candles. I would love to know how that design style came to be. Thank you and thanks for these videos.
Wow! You really got it! I live in Denmark and work in Sweden and everytime I see a 'Scandinavian design video or home tour' by a non-Scandinavian, they really miss the point. Not putting things in the home that serve no purpose, creating a sense of well-being, simplicity...you just got everything right!

I absolutely love your delivery style, how you present your points in such an interesting manner and even tie in history. Thank you so much; really love the scandi style!
Many years ago, I saw a for-sale townhouse that was decorated in Scandinavian style, and it was beautiful, functional and unforgettable. I still love this timeless look.
Thanks for an amazing video on modern Scandinavian style. Toppenbra. Underbart. ❤️ 100+ years ago most Scandinavian people had alot of rugs "trasmattor" hand weaved from cotton and wool rags on the floors to keep the homes and their feet warm. At least one fire place in every home was also common. Back then houses were often small and dark with basically just a kitchen and one family room where everything happened, from family gatherings and children playing to everyone sleeping there together at night. Families were big with many children, many lived in generation situations too (grandparents lived with their children and grandchildren). It was very crowded. Most people were poor back then. They only had what they needed the most. And I think that has followed us into the Scandinavian modern style when we like to keep our life and home style quite minimal. After the the 2 world war, more and more apartment block houses were built for the modern family. Those homes were built in a bigger, modern "funkis" (functional) style, and furnitures were to be practical, to match it and the new modern way of living. Scandinavia was to be a place of good and healthy life. The Scandinavian style has also under the past 30 years developed alot, from dark big retro patterns in wallpapers and curtains etc. in the 70ies, to a more white spacy simple even more modern look, as we see here in your video. Many homes have now more of an open house plan and we prefer high to the ceilings to increase the feeling of air flow and light. We use mostly white on walls to increase the feeling of light, to have more decor possibilities and for space. We bring in nature in forms of plants and in the use of wood etc. Yes we love nature. Bright colors and graphic patterns we mostly find in pillows, blankets, and some in wall decor, art, rugs etc. And these decors we keep changing depending on our moods, trends or seasons too. In the summer many prefer more of a light airy feeling in our curtains and home decor and in the winter we like the more cozy warm look with candle light. Us who prefer the Scandinavian style, we keep our homes minimal and easy to clean, that also means things has to be "off" of the floors and preferable not too many furniture. Most stuff we own, we use daily or absolutely love. We also like our homes to be personal and cozy, practical and comfortable and each small thing has to have its own organized space so we don't have to live in a cluttered stressful home. Ikea has helped us alot to develop the Scandinavian style and to organize it on a budget, that is very true. In our modern Scandinavian home we absolutely need to have good sitting spaces where we can relax and "fika" (have a coffee or tea break), that is super important. Family dinners happens most daily in the kitchen, which is a very central space in any Scandinavian home. Kitchens have to be very functional and fit the whole family and have good alternatives to fit our visitors, friends and family, now and then, too. In our lovely modern Scandinavian homes we love to practice a simple life style and I would also like to add, it's like we are almost "one" with our homes. It's all about finding a personal style and making the space feel great, modern, simple, bright and cozy. We wanna feel in peace and live happy with ourselves and our loved ones, so the relaxed "feeling of home" is so important. ❤️ Yes, I would love to see a video on scandi abstract art on a budget to match with this video, yes. And I look forward to more videos from your channel. Big Love to you from a Swede in Finland. ❤️

I just now realized that this is the design style I have been trying to go for.
1. Mixing old and new 2. Natural light (windows, skylight, white walls) 3. Black and white with natural tone 4. Artwork ( abstract large size) 5. Light and airy ( furniture off the ground ) 6. Textile (natural fabric) 7. Floors ( wood floor with light colour) 8. Declutter (cable management) 9. Use of wood 10. Plants 11. Architectural details I only caught 11 tips 😂😂😂did I miss anything?

Very accurate description of the Scandinavian style!! :) I'm a minimalist, always attracted to clutter-free, spacious homes with ample amount of natural light! But I also like to incorporate certain boho aspects like a bright pop of color here and there or textured cushions.

I am just now starting to get into decorating and I'm trying to learn my personal style. I really like the warm feel and look of Scandinavian style, but as a traveler, I've brought back quite a few large pieces of vibrant art. I also have a ton of books so I'm learning to be ok with mixing the minimalist look along with some color. I just keep moving things around until it flows. A work in progress.

Finally a video on scandinavian decor that is packed with useful info. You are fantastic in sharing it as well ❤️ Only recently I found a name to what I had in my head 😊 and been looking into it since. Best video on the subject. Keep up the good work. Love from Ireland 👍
Great video though when I lived in Sweden, NOBODY had curtains or even blinds on their windows. I found it so strange seeing into each other's houses in the winter when everyone had their lights on
You do know your stuff. Thank you for not waffling like people often do. Very useful!
I have been recently putting together the interior look of my house and I was going for this aesthetic without knowing the name or anything about it. After watching your video I’m surprised at how many features I had picked up on. Glad to finally have a name and some fun facts about this style!
Your video is the absolute best I’ve ever heard. You’ve done your research. Other videos on scandi design feel very much from an American perspective. Also, one has mentioned that they should mix old and new. You go girl!
I’m from Denmark and watching this video and the images you used made me feel sooo at home!!! Also, I love the way that you build your videos up, simple yet so informative😌😌
Great job. Being Danish but living abroad kind of make you take other opinions seriously. I am ex. Danish for about 25 years but make Danish design lighting in far east !! You have nailed it about the way we design and decorate our homes in Denmark (even i don't live there anymore). White walls / black decor !! happy happy !!!
You are bang on on everything!!!. I appreciate you get into details and explain why. I love scandi and in a relationship with a Dane. His home is a reflection of everything you touched on. Best scandi design video. Also love your japandi one too! Thank you!!!
New to your channel. WOW! Love this. I recently started doing "the Swedish Death Cleaning". I don't plan on departing this life soon. As Margraette states, I am somewhere between 60 and 80 years old, but am enjoying gifting my possessions to others and turning to minimalism. In the process my home started to look Scandi. I, too, have enjoyed going to IKEA to look at their designs, but I didn't think I could achieve this look as all of my possessions were overstuffed and oak. But after listening to you today, I feel that it is possible to lighten and brighten even with what I have. The "Hygge" concept is the most important to me. Even though I am older, I plan on living in the warmth of home, family and comfort. Removing the the extra "skrap" 🇸🇪 , stuff 🇺🇲 , opening the window coverings, simplifying the decor, neutralizing colors, and natural textures, can make my home very SCANDISH. Thanks 👍
highlighting nature (windows, natural light, natural fabrics/wood), remove clutter, muted colors: so soothing ☺️
You explained it so well and it didn’t feel rushed! Thank you for posting! ❤️
I love these "How to Decorate _____ Style" videos. Buying a new home and can't make up my mind...
My favourite style, especially in old period homes :) love the modern minimal look with old period features like mouldings and fire places x

Yes, add my voice to the chorus of PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON CREATING ABSTRACT ART. lol I want to thank you also, for suggesting that I blow up my favorite pics into poster size and frame them as art. I love my daughter's more casual poses and THIS is the perfect way to showcase and enjoy those lovely (sometimes quirky) faces!! (Posh for pennies... I get it!!)
Helene: I just read an interesting article about the Norwegian’s versus the Dane’s use of mid-century modern furniture as status symbols. While Norwegians tend to put their spot lights on the designer chair and use it extremely carefully as if it was a museum object to show off to your friends, the Danes use it as intended. Kids play on them and they are an integral part of their lives. These furnitures are made to last so they should be able to handle the wear and tear of a family. My impression is the same as this article. I am Norwegian and my feeling is that Norwegians want others to recognize what we have, so we will only buy recognizable elements. «I want what my neighbor has, just bigger» is something we joke about. This is a serious simplification, but I think there is a hint of truth to it. At least with the extreme care we pay to our designer pieces, they can be passed on for 200 years at least! Hehe. -Helene (Norway)
Love your little dog! 😊❤

I was born in 1955, my parents bought new living room furniture, which was very poplar then (1958/59) called Danish Modern. it was walnut with blue cushions. I've been a fan since a very young age.

Great overview (and I am Swedish)!! Would love an DIY art video. Also, your voice is very soothing. I could listen to you forever!
i am Scandinavian minimalist style !!! this video confirms it. I am in the middle of decorating a new house. Great reminders here on how to succeed
Thank you! That was great :)) My family's background is Norwegian and I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, near Banff, and have always been attracted to this type of design. Great tips. A recent move has put me next to a forest (ten feet from balcony) and so I'm feeling the need for a design change from very bright saturated colours to bringing nature inside and I love black and white anyway:)) THANK YOU!!
I like the structure and clarity of the video. It’s practical, useful, clear and to the point. Please keep doing them ❤
Thank you, it was a very informative and enjoyable video to watch. I was born in Denmark and moved to Australia when I was 8, so I really miss the Scandi style and your video brought back a lot of memories of my childhood. I will incorporate more of the tips in the video into my home. Yes please, please do a video about abstract art, that would be fabulous. I'm keen to do more personal art and photography to surround our home instead of store bought, which may be beautiful but has less meaning. I just don't know how to go what size for which wall, when placed with certain furniture (bed, sofa, entry way, blank wall), what certain frames do for a certain look, what frames look good together. Also tips for renters who can't paint and use nails would be amazing.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and ideas. Great video!
I've been decorating like this, unaware it had a name! The lack of colors just suits my minimalism style better, and the white walls are just bc my husband hates painting hahahaha
I'd really love a video on modern Italian design. There’s nothing to be found when googling because all that shows up in English language is bad American fake fantasy interpretation of Tuscan or Mediterranean style and not actual Italian design. Actual Italian style, just from my own experience of visiting people’s homes and watching Italian media, is closer to Scandinavian than it is to that, except more bold and colorful. Actually there’s a similar phenomenon with French country style which is different in America and what I’ve seen in France and French media. It would be really cool with videos comparing the American stereotype of those styles vs reality. Or maybe a series on the styles of different capital cities around the world/Europe would be sooo awesome. I really love your videos!
Such a detailed & helpful explanation, thanks so much! I love the scandinavian style 💙☕
Love the Scandi style! Thanks for the great video.
Wow I love your style, your gentle way, and your philosophy! Just found you today, and I am thrilled that you have given me inspiration to start my big reno... I knew it would be scandi, but this one video gives such meaning and direction to exactly what I want to create and recreate and where to begin! So, thank you!! I grew up in my family's victorian home, built by my great grandfather, who emigrated to US from Norway when he was a boy. He laid the most beautiful pale oak pieced wood floors.. 2 inch wide strips of wood, each room had it's own design... it was stunning. We all had hot water radiators in our bedrooms, painted white, of course, and in winter, we had the ritual and benefits of a makeshift humidifier as we slept... we placed a pan of water on top of the radiator each night and the water had evaporated by morning. (I still sleep with a cool mist humidifier) So, please consider me a HUGE FAN!!

Thank you for the description of the Scandi style. I currently have a mid-century modern design in my apartment. I've been a fan of it fir many years. I've acquired many large furniture pieces such as, couches, end tables and lamps. I want to incorporate the Scandi-style a bit more when i move into a bigger apartment in the spring. As you mentioned, declutter the space and change my artwork. Thank you for such great advice!
