Pro Tip: If you print the additional parts needed to make use of an empty spool at 100% infill and throw in a few test prints to get the tolerances just right, you don't even need an empty spool to start with.

Make a spinning stack of your storage spools, that can grow taller!

I absolutely loved the storage container idea! It's such a neat way to repurpose the spools and it's better for the environment. Also I love the background and would love to know more about the boards holding up your tools! Such a cool print!! Can't wait for the next video!

I tend to use filaments that come with cardboard spools, so they go into the recycle bin when I'm done, but I do have about 5 plastic spools, plus some 1/4 kg spools (small ones) that I could use for random projects in the garage. The storage and cable reels are really calling out to me! I wonder if I could turn the mini-spools into little storage containers! That would be cool for my tool drawers!

It could be awesome to use the small spools to create drawers! The design I made that’s on Printables should allow you to make as small or as big of drawers you want with any spool. Let us know if you make these tiny drawers!

Why aren't filament spools returnable to manufacturers for reuse?

Ohhh a good way to use the last bits of filament. Also useful if you make the compartments from recycled PET bottles.

Been saving many spools for years. Just threw them out because nothing really worked. It was always a better way than empty spools.

If you hoard miniatures like me, using the spools to make display towers is also a great option to reuse this things.

There are recycling companies that "buy" your waste to turn it into new recycled filament. I only know one called Recycling Fabrik in Germany, but there have to be others. Or try to find someone who own a Desktop-Extruder, someone might be willing to pay at least a bit for it.

i like the storage container idea myself but it requires 300g of filament to print one of the storage systems which is like $6 wasted the only real way that would work is if your selling stuff for people and need a idea for stuff on the market and even then its tough to just have empty spools lying around

One Word (technically its two, but its one thing): Master Spool Or if you can't: Bigger Spools If you favorite filament isn't offered as refill or at least on bigger spools, bugger them until they make it available. Or ask them if they take them back. I found a local company that actually does take them and put new filament onto them. Some smaller manufacturers take back at least there own spools to hopefully reuse them. Spools are just wasted material in my opinion...

same thought 🙂That's why i love the cardboard spools, they are at least better to recycle by dropping it in the paper recycling collection.

I absolutely HATE spools and wish that we had the option to buy a roll of filament without them. I would be more than happy to reload the rolls onto my empty spools and save myself the trouble of having to either dispose of them or find ways to repurpose them. there's only so many things that I can honestly do to reuse them in some way so until then they'll wind up sitting in the corner hoping against hope that one day a project will come around where they'll be needed or just go into the recycling in the faint hope that they'll actually be recycled and not wind up in a landfill or incinerator. Sadly, other than being used to hold the rolls of heat shrink tubing I have I have yet to find a project where I can actually reuse them for anything. The storage ideas sound good in principal but they just don't work for me or my needs.

Master Spools are for you then. "Das Filament" offers a system that allows you to buy just the filament and place it onto a reusable Master Spool. I have seen some other companies adapt this system as well, but not nearly enough. Just ask for it often enough, maybe they get annoyed and comply at some point :)
