4x12 Series Parallel Wiring Tutorial

Музыка

This is a quick instructional video on how to wire a 4x12 speaker cabinet in a SERIES/PARALLEL configuration.
When utilizing a SERIES/PARALLEL wiring scheme each pair of speakers is wired in series, then each series pair is wired together in parallel. When all four speakers have the same impedance, your final load will match. If you have four 16 ohm speakers, your final load will be 16 ohms, 8Ω will yield 8Ω and so on and so forth.
The style I use is similar to the way old vintage Marshall cabinets are wired.
The diagram shown on the video can be downloaded in the link below

    Ok FINALLY!! Seen a bunch of videos and none of them showed what they did at the jack being the parallel end of the equation! One guy had shaky blurry video, don't know why he bothered or how proud he could have been?? Great clean articulate video and now I have the confidence! Thanks!! Peace 🕊️☮️

    It’s actually very helpful to see the process with the twisted pairs. Nice and tidy. Thanks for posting this.

    @2;12 I hate to be "That guy" but best to heat the wire and terminal versus using soldering iron to "pool up" solder Coming from an Avionics tech....the connection will be much better, and last longer. Otherwise spot on, your way is the cleanest I've seen, sent this to a friend who asked best way to do this, video is always best...better than explaining to him.

    Wish I had this video a few weeks ago when my 1960 with T75's started acting up haha. Turns out the solder joints on one of the jacks on the stereo switching PCB broke loose somehow so I just replaced it all with just one normal jack and blocked off the holes similar to how you did. Also where do you get metal handles for your Marshall cabs? I'm looking to replace my plastic ones since they're getting pretty broken up. Thanks for another awesome video!

    I've been thinking about a 2x10 cab. As light as possible, and able to do 4 or 16 ohms. If you had any suggestions, it's for a '64 Bandmaster (4 ohm), or a Traynor Darkhorse (16 ohm).

    how do I wire (2) 8 ohm speakers in a cabinet to connect to an amp head with 8 ohm output?

  • @purgasound

    @purgasound

    Жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately that can't be done. The two 8 ohm speakers would either be 4 ohms in parallel or 16 ohms in series. You could run a mismatch into a 16 ohm load but I never recommend it if it can be avoided. When mismatching never run the amp at full volume.

    Nice video, dude. I have a question: So the two speakers connected in series would have an impedance of 32 ohms and since both sides are connected in parallel, the total impedance is 16 ohms? Do I understand this correctly? I'm asking because I have a Peavey 6505 4x12 speaker and in mono (so all four speakers) it has 16 ohms and in stereo (so only 2 speakers) it only has 8 ohms and not 32 and as far as I know it has the same wiring. Or have I not understood something correctly?

  • @purgasound

    @purgasound

    8 ай бұрын

    You are correct in your first statement. The difference in the Peavey cabinet is that it is wired in PARALLEL/SERIES which, when used in stereo, has a pair of 16 ohm speakers in parallel for an 8 ohm load. When used in MONO the two 8 ohm pairs are connected in series for a 16 ohm total load.

    If I were to build two speaker boxes containing two 18 inch 8 ohm subwoofers each and wired them both in series. Both boxes would play at 16 ohms. If I were to then daisy chain them together at the speakon connectors would they then both revert to 8 ohm impedence or both play at 16 ohms?

  • @purgasound

    @purgasound

    If two 16 ohm loads are daisy chained together (connected in parallel) then the final load would be 8 ohms, yes.

  • @glenprovidence4769

    @purgasound I mean with cable from the amplifier to the input of one box and from the output of that box to the input of the other via the speakon connectors outside the boxes. That would mean they would both be playing at 8 ohms if they were both wired in series at 16 ohms...yes?

    so im wiring a 4x8 with a tweeter, the tweeter is 5.6 ohm and theres a crossover, the speakers were originally 32 ohm ( 8ohm cab) and i want it to be 4 ohm, so i got four 4 ohm woofers and i want to wire it like this. Will i be fine to add in the tweeter and itll still be 4 ohm?

Im seein a lead free soldering whit 3% silver. what is better for this? Cheers from Mexico

    60/40 rosin core solder is perfect. If it does not have a rosin core then you will need to apply a flux to the surface prior to soldering for a good bond. 16AWG stranded wire is good. 14AWG is too much and will not fit through the solder tabs on the speaker terminals and the jacks. 18AWG is fine too. Marshall uses 18AWG wire in their cabinets.

    Is there any particular reason why you don't like using quick connectors?

  • @purgasound

    On the road the cabs are being shaken up for thousands of miles in the back of a semi-truck, trailer, or van. Those connectors can come loose and I don't trust them. Although I opened one of Sacred Reich's cabs that had been touring since the late 80's and those quick connects were still solid.

    The handling power of any speaker cabinet will be the number of speakers multiplied by the rating of the lowest wattage speaker.
