Definitely. Both 4K77 and 4K83 look about as great as official classic film restorations to my eyes. Couldn’t ask for anything better. 4K80 probably still needs some work (especially with the colors). But I still 100% prefer that over any of the official releases.

I ripped my 2006 DVD's and converted them to MKV while using a light "unsharp mask". I also cropped out the unnecessary black borders so that it could fill most of my tv screen and I got to say, with the "unsharp mask" filter, it looks pretty nice! I think I'd probably prefer the restoration projects, but watching the versions on the DVD has its own fun retro vibe.

@@dannypoo3281I also ripped them using MakeMKV and then upscaled them to 1280x720p with Handbreak. Nothing against Harmy's versions, but I dislike how they include his name in the credits as if he had something to do with the creation of these films.

@@blebcat No, not everyone is aware of this, so forgive me if I'm saying something you already know, but the theatrical editions on the 2006 DVD's have not only the black bars at the top, but also on the left and right sides when viewed on a television. Almost like a zoomed out picture. They're basically a 2.35:1 picture inside of a 4:3 box. All that black empty space can be cropped when converted so that it will fill the TV screen.

I'll never understand why Lucas couldn't just release the theatrical release versions under a different name if he was so concerned with maintaining 'his vision'. For those interested in the current canon, they can simply purchase the modern looking 'Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope' etc For those wanting a copy of the film that changed cinema forever, imagine finding a copy simply called 'STAR WARS' or for the sake of a marketing compromise 'Star Wars 77'' (The original Theatrical Release). Oh well..

If only you knew Irwin Kershner wanted Cloud City and the Wampa creature… those major changes were meant to also appeal to Irwin from Lucas. In a video regarding to the special editions he called Irwin and said, “remember the wompa you wanted? It’s in the film now” (paraphrasing). I guess you can enjoy an older version from a preservationist standpoint, but people like myself who prefer the author’s full authority of their own vision, I’m quite happy with it. On the topic of restorations Lucas did talk about them in the Archives book of the prequels by Tatschen and it’s said the restoration is needlessly expensive for the older films and to get a “true” restoration would be impossible. What the fans had done is implement a series of stitches of film sewing into a major piece called the unaltered films and eventually creating a Frankenstein’s monster of a feature. Not considered as a negative but also not considered pure compared to Kino Lorber’s Metropolis or Criterion Collection’s the Kid.

@@gr-8166 " I guess you can enjoy an older version from a preservationist standpoint, but people like myself who prefer the author’s full authority of their own vision, I’m quite happy with it." Doesn't give lucas the right to deny people the older versions and misses the point of film preservation and whether or not the author's vision is good or not (SE) is a debatable topic. "On the topic of restorations Lucas did talk about them in the Archives book of the prequels by Tatschen and it’s said the restoration is needlessly expensive for the older films and to get a “true” restoration would be impossible. Not considered as a negative but also not considered pure compared to Kino Lorber’s Metropolis or Criterion Collection’s the Kid." Umm you are forgetting that They spent millions of dollars restoring the original negatives and films in the 1997 re-release for the OT and made there money back, $20,000,000 to restore the negatives and made it back in the theatres with over $138,000,000 and thats not including Home Media sales, why cant they do that for the Unaltered Versions? Much older films like the Godfather and 2001: A Space Odessy had their film negatives worn down by time and yet there can be restored in a modern format and not have them being tinkered with or even changed why can't something as culturally significant as Star Wars have the same treatment? There is a authentic restoration and that is Mike Verta's Star Wars restoration but is afraid to show it, and even if the Despecialised Editions and even Project 4K77 are not fully authentic they are all coming from a place of the heart, the love of this franchise and a effort to at least attempt to preserve these films and give people a choice and a chance to see how it was during 77, 80 and 83 which Lucas could not do and for me that shows the true dedication of these people.

@@gr-8166 "the author's full authority of their own vision" is just a silly thing to say when those movies weren't really 'his vision' in the first place, and it's solely an act of drinking the Lucas Kool-Aid to believe he even came up with the majority of good ideas in the films. George's greatest creation is his mythology of himself as the hero of Star Wars, and it's as laughable as believing Luke Skywalker is real. He couldn't make those films great by himself, and he didn't. You're saying you want to see the 'whatever George wants' version no matter how bad it is, and you're having to ignore that most of what we see in the films wasn't anything he imagined by himself. He came up with a few good ideas, he kept working to get the films done, but it's just wrongheaded to pretend like it's all 'his vision' and the shitty prequels and shitty special editions are all the proof of that we need.

I just watched it this weekend and it’s not just you. From what I understand the 35mm print of Empire looked the worst of the trilogy. It took a lot of work just to get it to the point that it is now. 4K77 and 4K83 have multiple versions that provide tweaks like DNR. They haven’t gotten around to doing that for 4K80 yet. Just keep an eye out for upcoming versions that I’m sure will clean up the image and hopefully get this film to the same level of quality as the other two.

Something worth pointing out is also this: Scanning film reels for AOTC, ROTS only makes limited sense, since they were recorded digitally and are capped at that resolution. The 4k edition officially released is already an upscale. TFA, TLJ and TPM were recorded on film and then distributed to cinemas on film. They are more likely to benefit from the treatment the OT got. IIRC the standalone movies were shot digitally and TROS wasn't released in 35mm for theaters.

The current Fuji print looks great but it does have some flaws to it which for the most part have been fixed and unfortunatly some color correction work done early on was baked in which would require redoing the cleanup to fix. I hope that one day I'll be able to see these thing projected on the big screen though I guess my 4k OLED will suffice for now.

Quick note on the aussie print: The scan still has yet to be completely downloaded by the restorationists in the UK and US, due to its massive uncompressed file size. There was a short preview snippet of the Aussie print, but it got immediately overshadowed by a certain other print that, while fascinating, has its own separate project due to being a slight variant of the movie and being cropped to 2.21:1 😉 and on v2.0 versions in general: 4K83 2.0 is out, with a new restoration from the same Interpositive print scan, and work on 4K77 2.0 has been rekindled by a new Two-Pass HDR scan of the LPP print used for the Silver Screen Edition.

All we need now is for them to release the 70mm version of Empire they found which had a few differences from the 35mm version that was more widely available Edit: turns out that fans already found a copy before I wrote this!

I'm not sure why anyone would bother with this Empire is the most equivalent to the original film of all the OT. All the large changes in the special edition make the movie better.

Does anyone know the actual reason why Disney won't release the original versions since they should have the power to do so with the Fox acquisition? I mean we know why George wouldn't but his opinion doesn't really matter anymore. Seems like an easy way to make some cash

Not related to the video. I’m here for the Dragon Ball fans as Dragon Ball took a lot of inspiration from Star Wars when Toriyama expanded the Cosmic Lore of Dragon Ball. I hope you are all doing well after hearing about the passing of a man who loved Star Wars more than any of us would expect, and other science-fiction stories like The Terminator combined with his Mythical Martial Arts Fantasy Adventure story. Akira Toriyama is with Shenron now, running down Snake Way hoping that we’ll meet again soon for one last Grand Adventure.

You do realise that Jabba goes from human in episode 4 to Hutt in episode 6? That’s a major continuity error and the lightsabers looked terrible.

if a, although very talented and skilled, group of hobbyists could pull this off I wonder why Disney hasn't put in the effort to do this themselves even if it would involve scouring the globe for prints, the amount of money they'd make from Cinema, Blu-ray and streaming re-releases would justify it surely. As well as Lucas being out the picture.

No, they are not lost. I've got the original Star Wars on мау PC, Google Drive and torrents. Yes, they are not 4K, but they are original. And I don't care, they are not "official"... I have the real Jabba, as a human... And the cardboard rebels, at the end of New Hope. Don't say that isn't the original Star Wars. I justice have them, and I am proud of that. How I have them... It Dson't matter. I just have them. Disney, Please, don't sue me. I didn't get any profits from them... I just got them.... Because I am a FAN.

I'd give anything for them to release these versions officially. They never will, but as someone who 'hates' the end of ROTJ where they impose Haydens face onto the original actor, if only for the fact I feel like his appearance is being lost to time. I also have issue with it thematically and just in general but it is what it is.

My pipe dream of an official release still exists. If Disney announced a special Skywalker Saga 50th anniversary box set with not just the theatrical cuts and current special editions of the original trilogy, but every different version of episodes I-VI ever released updated and restored to 4K, with all the special features from every previous release also included, I could die happy in that moment. As well as when I get my hands on it. I want to see Phantom Menace puppet Yoda in 4K.

It’s nearly impossible ,Lucas still owns the OT and the characters. Disney will never buck up to pay him to use the rights, which is why Luke was barely in the first movie and why they killed the OT trilogy characters off asap, lol

George lucas started changing star wars 50 days after its release. There is no original, but this is still super cool that we've preserved a puece of history nonetheless
