On June 15th, 2008, a bizarre post would appear on 4Chan’s /b/ also known as its random board. The post’s author attached an image and challenged users to solve the code concealed in the picture. Unbeknownst to the users at the time, this post would be the beginning of one of the most mysterious scavenger hunts of all time, leading anonymous users to sketchy areas in real life to retrieve strange packages with puzzles that the 4Chan community would be determined to solve.
This is the story of Project905, also known as the Basin Hills project.

    This is another one of the reasons why I strongly believe that if we gathered the thinking power of 4Chan, world hunger wouldn't be an issue, let alone inflation and poverty.

  • @notfunny3397

    @notfunny3397

    Solving world hunger is fairly easy with the cooperation of a few very rich individuals. The world has enough food and we have enough land to produce more farmland. All it would take us building a few transport networks, expensive but very doable. And then the supply of food itself, which can pretty quickly be paid for the by the people benefitting, as they can spend time making money instead of wasting all their time starving and dying young.

You don't have friends, that's why you spend your days here." and "A chance to leave your house, to jump head-first into something you don't fully understand. This is why I wouldn’t encourage anyone to get intrinsically involved in internet puzzles. There is a chance that a sketchy guy like Oversight could stage an elaborate puzzle with no actual conclusion to waste people’s time.

    I honestly believe Oversight's explanation. have a background in psychology, and this entire thing immediately reminded me of the Dunning-Kruger effect. The clues and puzzles created showed he was a clever person, but on the bottom rung of what people would consider "smart" likely only slight smarter that your average person (IQ around 105-110). These people have the highest degree of confidence in their own intellect, knowledge and abilities, as well as having the largest descrepancy between ability and their own belief of their ability. He was trying to make this intricate puzzle game, but it was done with a really amateur set of codes, clues, and setup. At the end when he says it was a "test of his own mind" I believe it, he probably thought he was a genius capable of creating this amazing ARG, but just wasn't qualified to do so. The fact that he blames his "faith in his subjects", as if it was everyone else who made the game a failure is Dunning Kruger peak to a tee. The guy wasn't smart enough to stay hidden not once, but twice, from teenagers who still don't have fully developed brains. I wouldn't be surprised if Oversight was a leftist too.

  • @aceambling7685
    @aceambling76855 ай бұрын

    Wow that was lame. I cant stand these weak ARGs. Theres no mystery here. Its just a lonely NEET who watches too much anime trying to live out the most anemic mastermind fantasy possible. He didnt even have the creativity to make it interesting. The initial message was stilted and nebulous, when it failed to get peoples attention he had to pretend to be a player and make up a story about a bomb squad (that was instantly proven fake). He posted the pictures of November as retaliation for trying to debunk and derail his game, but that just exposed that he was on location, which led to him getting into a high speed chase and almost doxxing himself (if that even happened and the other users involved arent just his friends). Its like a scavenger hunt your gramma would set up for you as a kid, but my gramma atleast had the ingenuity to make invisible ink with lemon juice. "Retrieve the package" whats in the package "directions to the next package". The clues arent even clues, they're just exact directions. The website just adds another layer of people caring so little about this that he had to literally spoonfeed it to them. The cringiest moment was when he used the website to cry and seethe about his own failure to plan and the players refusal to play the way he wanted them too. And the fact that all of the clues were in Florida is just lame. Man didnt even have enough dedication to drive a state over. You tried (and failed) to make this dramatic and spooky, but personally I doubt any serious poasters were worried about their safety, they simply didnt care enough to go check it out.
