49ers Dietitian Discusses NFL Athletes and Emerging Nutrition Science

NFL players hit harder, run faster, and jump higher than ever before. That means they need all the help they can get in fueling peak performance and recovery. For the past three years, the 49ers have looked to Jordan Mazur to provide it. We sat down with Jordan, who’s one of our Momentous Performance Engineers, to get his take on a wide range of topics - everything from the need for clean supplements to his people-first approach to the promise of genetic testing.
0:10 - “What are the biggest nutrition misconceptions you see in the NFL?”
2:07 - “How important is individualization in nutrition?”
2:50 - “How important is trust between the athlete and dietician?”
3:46 - “What tools are you using to personalize your nutrition prescriptions?”
4:49 - “How important is it that your supplements are NSF certified?”
5:59 - “What shifts are you seeing in the food industry?”
6:34 - “How do consumers influence the products companies produce?”
8:09 - “Nutrition is just part of the equation - What other factors affect performance?”

Was hoping to get some different information, such as how to fuel up and recover, but at least I learned about looking for the NSF label.

They call it emerging. Here in the health sciences we have been preaching this for decades with a lot of push back. As I tell my athletes, you can never out-perform a unhealthy diet.

I've been severely overweight 4 times in my life (including obese once) but I've always worked out and played sports as a hobby. I perform like I'm 40lbs lighter. So I know my way around weight loss. I can confirm, you cannot outrun a bad diet.

Does diet and nutrition really boost your performance? I noticed as I started to eat healthier and consume more whole grains, I did feel better on the field. It’s almost as if I’m on my A game every single play. Another thing is my energy always restores immediately; I just feel like I’m running faster, and my entire body is in synch. Is this a result of improved strength and fitness through training, or is it primarily due to my lifestyle changes?

Main points: have a healthy diet, but get your rest/sleep, too, and try not to be stressed.
