49. Lapworth to the Saltisford Arm (Warwick) on the Grand Union Canal by narrowboat

#narrowboat #narrowboats #canal #canals #liveaboard #cruisingthecut
I'd spent several days idling away my time quite pleasantly at Kingswood Junction at Lapworth but now wanted to go and visit family for a bit so needed a better place to leave the boat.
So I went down the Hatton lock flight to Warwick and moored in the Saltisford Arm, run by the Saltisford Canal Trust. Lovely spot albeit a bit noisy from the traffic nearby.

Many thanks, keep them coming, great to watch. Any chance of some more of your daily and evening life on board the boat. Cooking, cleaning, reading, watching the telly as light fades outside and your interior lights come on, drawing the curtains, preparing for bed , then getting up making breakfast, preparing for the days cruising etc.Its the small things of unusual lives that can be fascinating I think.

I'm sure there are wrinkles and drawbacks, but what a lovely life (at about 2 1/2 miles an hour!) I seriously considered selling up and moving to a life on the canal when I retired, but being in my sixties and NOT fleet of foot I decided that locking on my own would be a no-no. Anyway another excellent and most enjoyable vlog. Can't wait for the next !

It always amazes me how you can have multiple camera recording for hours per day, and _somehow_ you manage to get a clean and precise -10 minute video out of all of that. Whereas amateurish me records with one [web]camera, and keeps almost all the footage in the final edit except for small things like clearing my throat, false starts, and staring at a detail on something. I'm jealous of your editing skill in this matter.

For some reason, we are intensely fascinated by all of these wonderful little do-it-yourself locks. We traversed 17 locks on a river cruise in Russia several years ago, with some drops as much as 50 feet! We're sure those locks are not self-service though! If you have a video that we've so far missed, where you show in more detail exactly what the entire process is like of operating a lock from entry to exit, please do let us know. Thanks David!

Hi there. I am enjoying your videos very much. The short, concise commentary says it all, no flowery garbage, just what the doctor ordered. Here in Canada we don't have canals like Britain, our waterways are wide and join lakes where the water can get quite rough, does not bode well for flat bottom boats. The scenery in England is so tranquil and pretty and the pubs, ahh, for the next pint. I was originally from Somerset. We have a saying here the a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into. Fair analogy I think given your expenses. Keep them coming mate, they are great.

Why don't you try Vuollerim? Some 140 km uppstream the Luleälv in Sweden. The curren aroun 5 knt. No locks! But you have to carry your narrow five times! The lowest lift some 5 m the highest approx 30 m. I'll have a cup of tea for you when you arrive! By the way. I like your vlog!

Such a lovely stretch of canal. I did notice at 5:01 and on a few other locks on the stretch, there's a smaller canal to the side of the lock. I wonder what these are. "Eat, Drink, Allday" looked rather tempting, by the way!

Hey David, I mentioned in another comment (on a different vlog) that I'm hoping to get my own narrow boat here in Ireland next year...have to say, the thoughts of going through locks (I'll be by myself) is freaking me out!!! I get so bloody anxious just watching you go through them :p That being said, Ireland isn't very liveaboard friendly (seemingly they're trying to outlaw it) and locks aren't made for lone boaters (many of them don't have ladders, so it would definitely be a 2 person job). Not letting that put me off 'though....as they say (whoever 'they' are) were there's a will there's a way! ;)

As always it's great to see the canals and countryside looking lovely. The drips on the solar panels made me wonder how they are performing. Do you have one of the controllers that allows you to see their contribution in relation to what you get from running the engine?

I'm probably the wrong person to ask, alas - I have yet to venture onto a river, preferring to get used to the canals first. I suppose my tips would be don't do it solo the first time, get someone else along to help. And, of course, make sure the river's not in flood or likely to be. Take a charged mobile phone and have a life jacket on maybe. Good luck!
