    Wow! Victron just keeps on innovating. I was looking for your MPPT controllers and did not realize Victron had a hybrid inverter/charger with dual inboard MPPT units capable of handling all your solar too. I thought this device must be a beast, but when I found it online it turns out to weigh only 11 kg! My friends with older boats (big cats) with big 12VDC and 24VDC conversions are going to be so jealous!!! Congratulations on your choice of builder. Excellent system and wire diagrams! Top marks!

    I installed the exact same bow thruster but at 12v . And I can confirm it takes 500 amps . I ran twin 4/0 cables to power it directly from my Lifepo4 bank with its own fuse . . Wire was expensive and a little heavy but I want to keep everything at the same voltages . Works great , very little voltage drop and turns our Bristol on a dime . Great video ! Your boat is coming along nicely .

    Many find it helpful to think of electricity through a wire as water through a garden hose. Amps equal gallons of water, voltage equals water pressure. Also, since the work done by electricity equals amps X voltage, at 48 volts only 1/4 as many amps, or gallons if you will, are needed to do the same job.

    I strongly suggest that you obtain a set of as-built wiring diagram plans for your future use. Get paper and computer drawings. At some point you will need them. You should also ask for the structural, architectural, and plumbing drawings - a full set. I love that most wiring is inside conduit that will allow a much easier way for you to maintain or add to what has already been installed. I don't think Santa can provide you with any gifts that are better than this boat. Best, :¬) Webhead USA

  • @evandessel

    @evandessel

    Tinned wires are a “typical” US thing where marine grade wire is associated with tinned wire. You don’t need tinned wire, just need to make sure that you use dialectic grease when crimping the lugs on. Marine wire is fine stranded flexible wire with specific sheath material.

    Noticed they aren't using ABYC color code for DC circuits. Also two solar panels do seem like much power for the total loads.

    ABYC is an American standard, so we shouldn’t expect to see ABYC color codes with a European build. I’m also wondering why only two solar panels and where else is power generated. One possible guess is that the two solar panels might power the 24V loads and a hydrocarbon fueled generator might power the 48V loads. Maybe.

    48 volts is a brilliant move. It took cars until the 1950s to go from 6v to 12v. What Telsa did in their Cybertruck is run 48v power lines but control all the devices with WiFi and USB. This means that if something doesn't work it should be easier to trouble shoot. And there are significantly fewer wires. One line can power multiple devices because there doesn't have to be a physical switch back in the control panel. All the taillights, back up lights, turn signals, license plate light... are powered by just one pair of wires. (Of course for boats this is early days, and what works in a car might not work on a boat.)

    @@LoanwordEggcorn, CANBUS over ethernet. CANBUS is a standard automotive/industrial protocol and ethernet is the physical layer. Power over ethernet is not really needed since they are running 48v lines for power, but not over the ethernet/data conductors (which is what POE does) as far as I know.

  • @LoanwordEggcorn
    @LoanwordEggcorn5 ай бұрын

    Thanks much. It's unfortunate, but a current fact of life, that all three voltages 48, 24, 12 must be supported. That sort of triples the complexity. In an ideal world only 48 Volt would be needed. That trend will improve with Tesla, Ford and eventually others going to 48 Volt car systems. Also for smaller items a Power Over Ethernet (POE) bus is how Tesla and others are doing power distribution now. Slightly less applicable in a boat since there are far fewer devices, but a bus type approach is much simpler and easier to install. For example, the number of cables is reduced very significantly with a bus. Boating will lag behind cars for many years in this regard, but it sort of already happens even in boats, for things like CAN bus and related signalling networks. This also happens with CZone digitally switched boat power networks. Centralized power bus with digitally controlled remote taps means much simpler wiring. And they still have remote switches which can be manually operated if needed. So, much simpler installation. Still recommend more solar, including on the coachroof. Walkable panels are fine.

  • @mcarling6495

    @mcarling6495

    2 ай бұрын

    I agree with the recommendation for more solar. I don’t agree with the idea that both 12V and 24V are needed. Most US built boats are all 12V without any 24V systems. Most European built boats are all 24V without any 12V systems. I would do as much as possible with 48V, as Paul and Sheryl are doing, and then use 24V for the remainder. I would not use any 12V systems onboard.

    It's covered in an earlier video. Super B batteries. Needed for hybrid electric drive and house loads. Can regenerate power by sailing. In other words the batteries can be charged simply by sailing to pull the prop through the water as a generator. Can also be charged by shore power, solar, alternator, etc. Electric power is the best.
