48 Hours in Santo Domingo. Dominican Republic 2021. Travel Guide + Colonial Zone Tour 🇩🇴
Santo Domingo Travel Guide! In this video we're in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic exploring the Colonial Zone for this best things to do in city in 48 hours.
We start off at Independencia Park. Here you'll find a plaza with many statues as well as a mausoleum of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic.
From here we make our way to El Conde, the main pedestrian street in this part of the city where you'll find vendors, performers, restaurants and lots of shops. We pick up a drink (Presidente beer) while we walk. Eventually ending up at Parque Colon (Columbus Park) which has a statue of Christopher Columbus in the centre. We also take a look at the amazing cathedral here in the square, which happens to be the oldest Cathedral in the Americas and is called The Cathedral of Santa María la Menor.
We pick things up the next day where we show off our cute hotel called Casa Sanchez, including the rooftop, pool and our room.
We then head to another big square in the Colonial Zone called Plaza de Espana where you'll find the Alcazar De Colon.
After walking down a beautiful and historic street we head into the Fortaleza Ozama where we walk around and explore the castle/fortress, the grounds and check out the amazing view.
Lastly we head to a rooftop bar called SugarCane which happens to have an amazing view of the cathedral and Parque Colon.

On that Columbus park every Sunday there's a public community supported musical school. Kids of low resources can go and learn how to play an instrument with professional musicians. It gets pretty crowded because of that.

I would love to join you for this trip in the Dominican Republic. Wow! I love this country...In my past when I was married with the father of my children,we went there every years for almost 10 years... We went to Puerto Plata and Sosua, Cabarete etc. We visited Punta Cana but didn't stay there... The Dominican Republic is very beautiful... This is one of my prefered country to visit and stay to. Peoples are friendly and very kind towards visitors. But I also discovered the Philippines and love it to. Wow! With you guys and other couples that I'm following on KZread.... I would love to go and visit the Philippines to...but I'm afraid of planes now. So many hard flys with planes....turbulences and to long hours in a plane so that is why I don't go there. But It is one of my dreams to visit the Philippines like you did. May God bless and protect you and your families you two. Big hug and kisses from: Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦♥️😘🙏

Hi, the cruiseship you're talking about in 12:17 is the "Ferry del Caribe". It is actually a simple cruise ship and a cargo ship that travels frequently on a weekly basis connecting Santo Domingo and San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the main (and I guess the only) transportation by sea between the two cities (you can also travel there easily by plane). Thanks for coming to Santo Domingo, my city! I hope you felt welcomed here. The video is lovely.

The fort entrance at 2:18 is where the first shot was fired to start the independence of DR on February 27th, 1844, and the day we raised our flag for the first time. It was the original entrance to the fortified city. That door is called La Puerta del Conde.

Saludos.

Another gem in the colonial zone is the museum of Cacao. It was right across the Fortaleza Ozama. Also, there’s a Cathedral with some guards usually wearing a white uniform. That cathedral is beautiful and it is the most important place were former Presidents, war heroes and famous politicians are taken for their final rest.

Hola.
Very attractive city all these squares and views
Trevor and Anna as always love your videos. In Santo Domingo if you like Dominican food, you may want to do some research on a restaurant call Adrian Tropical. There are several location in Santo Domingo. One in George Washington ave by the Malecon and the other one by Abraham Lincoln ave which I have been to. If you want to try the Dominican version of the Subway sandwich, you may want to try Barra Payan and always order the natural fruit juice. At night, you have notice the restaurants facing Plaza de Espana. These restaurants are open at night and having dinner out in the open is a tremendous scene with the warm color of the light illuminating the history building.

The oldest city in America is La Isabela, located in Puerto Plata. You should try going there and visit Fricolandia, too.
I literally grew up there 🥺

As a Dominican I can recommend that your itinerary when visiting should include a stay in Santo Domingo for half your stay and the rest in Punta Cana (or any of the other resorts) to decompress and be pampered. Believe me, if you're going to spend your whole stay in an all-inclusive resort is like you've never been here.

Good video Trevor & Anna! 👍🙂...you did a nice job... history wise is ok/good. Pronunciation wise, not too terrible, lol, 😹. I'm Dominican & from New York too. Fortaleza or "fortress" is not quite right though. 😂 The "le" syllable has a different sound like saying "led" (example: "he led" >sound type) >fortaledza>fortaleza. Yeah, it's sad that some North Americans may not even know that our island 🏝️ exists so close to them! As a matter of fact, when I went to school in New York, in the '70's & '80s' people would ALWAYS ask me ?the Dominican Republic? ?where is it? LOL! 😊 People in the USA, & perhaps Canada too, they may not even realize that we are Americans also>Dominicans. 😃 We're not from Europe, or Africa, or China/Japan etc, lol, 😄 we're from "The Americas" too just like people up North. But we speak Spanish rather than English on the island. It was Christopher Columbus who named the island "Santo Domingo", because finding that one big island literally SAVED his life from imprisonment; and he discovered it on a Sunday=Domingo / Santo=Holy or Saint "Holy Sunday" in a literal sense. Columbus also named the island La Española "Hispaniola" in English after the Spanish monarchs who financially supported his voyage. Good luck with all future trips, video taping, & be well. 👍👍😃💓💓💓💓💓

Most of those buildings are from the 15th to 16th hundreds. The Spaniards lived there and now a days are whether museums or owned by descendents of the Spanish people. It was considered the rich side of the city as it grew and the servants and low income people lived across the river and behind the independence park out the city walls that, by the way, was taken down. There is just a small piece of the wall standing as a memory of what used to be.

It depends on the area, usually the colonial zone is a safe place, the dangerous places are in the places near the city, a Dominican tells you
1719 was the year the slaves of the carib started revolting, imagine the master's surprise learning they weren't happy and their homes containing so many of them (nah, they'd never attack!) Bonne vacances, great, you're already married as if safer than being single!
