Might be worth noting that Staubach gave away the first 5 years of his career out of college, arguably the most productive years (or at least the foundational ones) of any professional athlete, to serve our country as he had agreed to do as a midshipman educated at Annapolis.

Roger Staubach remains the only QB to successfully transition from the bump and run era to the current 5 yard chuck rule. The 1977 season was the last season in the bump and run era and Staubach led the Cowboys to their 2nd Lombardi Trophy. The new rules were implemented prior to the 1978 season and all Roger did was lead the NFL in passer rating in 1978 and 1979. When it came to the QB position, Staubach filled every box (e.g., strong arm, accurate, mobile, a leader, thrived in the clutch, and he retired prior to the 1980 season with the highest QB rating in NFL history), and is easily one of the Top 5 QB's in NFL history.

Rooted against him back then, but now I realize how great a player and a Man he is. Great role model. Awesome athlete and American!

#46 ? Are you kidding me? I am an Eagles fan (for 46 years) and I will share with you what No. #12 meant to me. I seen my first "Roger Dodger" shellacking of my Eagles in 1974. I was 9 years old, It wasn't until I was 15 in 1979 when I finally seen my Eagles beat the Cowboys (1-10-0 from 75' to 79'). I went outside and jumped in a snowbank with my "Jaws" jersey on. Anyway, when No. #12 would take the field, I would look at him in awe, total awe, I thought he was invincible. I would sweat, and tense up watching him, scream at the TV get sent to my room, and on the day he retired I literally bawled my eyes out, because I wouldn't get to see my Eagles ever beat him again. I have never been in such awe with another NFL player ever again (although I did love McNabb), so ok, Cowboys, here you go coming from an Eagles fanatic, Roger Staubach is the greatest QB this Eagle has ever seen! -From Eagles with love. (Oh yeah, Captain America's 1976 Bicentennial Cowboys helmet? A freakin' classic!).

Not me...I was one of those kids who lambasted the NFL for its custom, then, of converting Black college QBs to wide receiver, as de facto custom. (Did you know that Jefferson Street Joe actually beat out Terry Bradshaw in training camp head-to-head competition to be Steelers' starting QB? Unfortunate for Gilliam, he was sidelined early season because of injuries, Bradshaw was inserted as Steelers' starting QB...and JJJ never got another opportunity to win back the starting job.)

My all-time favorite Dallas Cowboy.. I cannot tell you how many thrills I got from watching him play. No game was beyond his reach.. you never felt the Cowboys would lose as long as Roger was in the game. I remember a Sunday noon game against the St Louis Cardinals in 1974 or 1975, My brother and myself were at church service and my brother was listening to the game on a transistor radio while service was in progress. When the score reached 28-3 Cardinals leading as the 4th began, my brother decided to turn the radio off and stop risking Getting a beating because of listening to the ball game... By the time we arrived home after church service had ended we found out that Staubach had lead to Cowboys to a 31-28 comeback victory. Simply amazing. He was truly a great player but a much much better person. Thank you Mr Staubach.

What an incredible player, his ability to scramble and throw on the run was amazing. Didn’t even become a full time starter until he was 29 and still got the Cowboys to 4 Super Bowls and won 2 in the 70s. Truly one of the 5-10 greatest qbs to ever play.

When I was rooting for the Steelers back in the 70s dynasty era, I felt like a two touchdown lead with less than half the fourth quarter left was game over - UNLESS we were playing Roger Staubach or Ken Stabler. And of those two, Staubach was the one I feared (and respected) more. Super Bowl XIII, he gets the ball with less than seven minutes left, down 18, facing the Steel Curtain - and darn near got it done. If they had recovered the second onside kick I think he would have finished the comeback.

mastick , yeah, Staubach is the perfect example of a QB who never lost a game. He just ran out of time. He was terrifying in close games because of his will to win. RESPECT.

He was so inspirational to me as a kid. I really believed Roger could win every game the Cowboys were in !!!! Class, charisma, integrity, toughness, guts, humility, dedicated to the team, a leader, acted the same whether he won or lost ...... he had it all. Roger was everything I wanted to be as an athlete growing up. He remains my favorite QB of all time ..... one of my favorite people of all time !

Even Troy Aikman says he's the #1 Cowboy of all time

I watched Roger Staubach play football and was amazed. I have watched Roger Staubach live life the way it should be, and that's beyond amazing. I don't deal out accolades too easily, however, in these times Roger is a man that should serve as an example of how people need to be. I'm proud that he was and always will be a Dallas Cowboy, and I'm proud that my children have learned just how good a person he really is. Thank you Roger and God bless you!!!

Give me Roger any day of the week and I ALWAYS had a chance to win the game no matter what the situation. He will always be my QB!!!

Steve Kloepping , in a sense he was the Elway of the 70s. Great arm and mobility. Teammates always felt they had a chance to win, especially if a game was close late. I'm a Steelers fan but I'm convinced Staubach was the best QB of the 70s. He was terrifying to face in late game clutch situations. With Staubach playing against your team you never felt safe until the final gun sounded. He was undoubtedly more clutch than some QBs who are ranked ahead of him on all-time lists.

If you consider all aspects of a QB, Staubach is unquestionably Top 10.

Staubach is by no means the greatest passer of all time. But he is THAT guy. I’d pick him over any QB. In my opinion he is the greatest leader of all time. He made the most amazing comebacks & highlight plays. The Comeback Kid couldn’t even wow me over a comeback win than the Comeback Kid could.

Forget the stats and all the numbers that say otherwise. Staubach was simply the best and there will never be another quarterback like him. The ultimate competitor with incredible drive, along with eye-popping talent; more often than not, Staubach would always find a way to win, and did he ever. Thanks for the great memories, Roger; you're the best ever.

Staubach was beast!!! I had an Upperdeck football card(that came out later) that was signed by Staubach when I was a kid. My dad met him fixing his sewer line at his house and Staubach signed it.(My dad was a plumber) I loved that card, but my dad ended up selling it so we can pay our mortgage.😢😢😢😢 I was mad at my dad for so long but as I grew up I understood why he did it. Man I wish I still had that card.

The NFL is today thanks to Roger Staubach in the 1970's when is when the NFL had its biggest boom and it was in part because of the Dallas Cowboys and especially because of Roger Staubach.He made football international. In Mexico we started watching the NFL in the early 70s which is when RS came into playing and making the Cowboys America's team.

I had the horrible fortune of falling in love with the "St Louis" Cardinals back in the early '70s. Oh man.... I LOVED that team! Jim Hart, Terry Metcalf, Jim Otis, Dan Dierdorff, Conrad Dobler, Mel Gray....BUT it just so happened they played in the NFC East with the Eagles, Giants, Redskins, and..of course....The damn Dallas Cowboys! If I had a dollar for every time Roger Staubach broke my Cardinal-loving heart (Hart? ...lol)....I could long retired. I HATED him, but boy did I respect him! He should be higher just for crushing my dreams so many times!!!!

I'm not sure it would have made much difference, but I sure did hate to see Archie waste his talents in NO. But Hart was a very, very good QB with a canon arm. He doesn't get much love these days because they didn't win enough and there were SO many great QBs in that era. My dad was a Dallas Cowboy fan, and we had some really heated rivalries watching the Cowboys and Cards play each other. Great memories of a great time in NFL history.

A 49er fan here so I got no love for any Dallas Cowboy...however I have an appreciation for Roger "the Dodger" Staubach. He lives up to the legendary status Cowboy fans hold him in but what I noticed about his style is how much it reminded me of how Steve Young played the QB position. Turns out RS12 was his absolute hero growing up and idolized him as a player and a man. If I ever encounter Mr. Staubach someday I'll first thank him for his service to our country and 2nd I'll thank him for directly inspiring the QB who lead my team to eventually winning the Superbowl in 94'. The two actually met for the first time during the coin-toss for the 1992 NFC Championship game.

50 years ago Memories of Staubach that will never die! Nail biting games even though Roger had many comebacks and would normally do that! But the last time he did it or will there be another? Lol!!! Incredible watching him!

Staubach was a legend in his own time! And yes, he was a hero to those who grew up watching him play!

Captain America, as he was called in the '70's was better than Bradshaw; this coming from a Steelers fan. Bradshaw did throw a better deep ball and he had 3 huge advantages: the Steel Curtain, Lynn Swann, and John Stallworth. He's still imo, the best quarterback in Cowboys' history and yes that includes Aikman and Romo.

Agreed best QB in Cowboys history. It's a Pick Em for Greatest Player in Cowboys history between Roger and Emmitt. I would have a Statue made in front of Cowboys Stadium of Roger handing the ball off to Emmitt. LOL..

Roger Staubach was Tom Brady-calm-and-collected before Tom Brady was even born. He was awesome to watch, even for people who weren't fans of the Cowboys. I agree he should be in the top 10 or at least the top 20. His coach, Tom Landry, was brilliant too.

Staubach was the complete QB he made plays on a regular basis that Brady could only dream about. That's why he's 2nd all-time behind the incomparable Otto Graham. They made plays on their own besides being great passers and winners.

Roger the dodger! Aka Captain America. My dad used to tell me stories about what a stud Roger was in the 70’s. That everybody wanted to be him because he was just so cool, even people who didn’t like the Cowboys. He was one of the OG scrambling QB’s too. Guy was incredibly fast for a QB and had a good arm too. One of the GOATs for sure. I think his ranking should be higher than 46 though. 💯

He has to be top 10. If not for the concussions that forced him to retire, i believe he would have gotten the Cowboys one or two more SBs. My favorite player of all time.

I think Staubach was way more image conscious than Namath ever was... think about it. And yes, Staubach was twice as good.

I disagree. Roger had those amazing character traits and just lived his life by them. There was no conscious effort to project an image like Namath did. That was just the way Roger rolled.

He had a perfect, wholesome quality, but was cool, had an edge and was heroic. Something relatable about him that made him likesable and inspiring. An actual good role model. Nothing phony beloney about him. He came off as a real person.

Staubach was as fast as a bullet when he ran up the middle. His confidence was amazing. I think he's the most intimidating qb. A true american hero

3:33 Amazing how that Butch Johnson catch in Super Bowl 12 was even remotely considered a catch by the standards of that era. Now you have to catch the ball run home with it take a nap wake up take a shower eat breakfast and come back to the stadium while the same game is being played before it's even considered a catch

actually they changed the rules after that catch, but it was legal at that time.

as a Cowboy fan, (much more so then) i remember loving getting to the 2 minute warning with the Boys down by 4. b/c i knew i was about to see a master craftsman apply his trade. and he did it in a time when the defense didn't get flagged for using harsh language.

Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys, Terry Bradshaw and the Steelers, The Oakland Raiders, the Miami Dolphins, the Los Angeles Rams, the Washington Redskins, the Houston Oilers, the Minnesota Vikings, the USC Trojans, the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Oklahoma Sooners, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Michigan Wolverines, the Oakland Athletics, the Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Lynnard Skynard, Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, the Rolling Stones, Chicago, the Allman Brothers , Stevie Wonder, the Marshall Tucker Band, Kansas, Elton John, Boston, Kiss, Frankie Beverly and Maze, the Ohio Players..... some of the greatest sports teams ever and my favorite music from the 1970s. I did NOT include the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, the Eagles and Fleetwood Mack because I could NOT stand them.

For what he meant to the NFL as far as popularity he is top 5 easy, but this goes off accomplishments and statistics, Roger had a semi-short career and played in an era where statistics were not the main concern.

Aikman was great and won more super bowls; but staubach was to his team, what emmitt smith was to his in the 90s. He was not only the leader, but the heart, soul, and center piece who made everyone around him just that much better

David had to shake the reputation of not being clutch, especially when Olajuwon took him to school in in the playoffs in his MVP year. Staubach came through time after time in his career. Plus the Cowboys were way more high profile than the Spurs.

Go look at Staubach's career stats and keep in mind that barely played at all in '69, '70 and '72. He also didn't get the full time starting job in '71 until week 8. The man threw for 22,700 yards with a rating of 83.4 in basically just 8 and a half seasons. Six 1/2 of which had only 14 games.

Also, that was before most of the rule changes that would make the NFL more passing oriented.

Not to mention he's the most successful football player in terms of net worth: he sold his real estate company to Jones Lang LaSalle for nearly $700 million. And he built his wealth at a time when even the best players needed to supplement their income with work during the offseason. Soldier, Superstar, Businessman - certainly no other NFL player has ever crossed over into those spheres as well as Captain Comeback.

I'm a Steelers fan, but #46??? Staubach was better then Bradshaw, and I frankly believe one could make an argument he was the best ever. Staubach dominated in his time... A time when it was exceptionally difficult to pass, and QBs were not protected. Besides that, he was monumentally held back by Landry's system --the central reason why he retired, because he still has plenty of game left in him but was tired of Landry's short leash. Staubach in today's NFL would tear it up. He's totally underrated, and I have nothing but the utmost respect.and appreciation for Mr. Roger Staubach.

I would also include Dan Fouts as a guy that was tough, smart , and had the most passing yards during a brutal time in the N.F.L. he would have faded away as a mere backup today.

Both Staubach & Bradshaw had some QB controversy with Craig Morton & Jim Gilliam. At one time both their starting jobs were up in air. Seems crazy now.

Top 5 qb all time

After he retired, the Cowboys went to 3 straight NFC championships...and lost them ALL. You can bet your ass they would've won at least one of those, if he been behind center. His teammates believed in him, and his presence, alone, made them rise and play even better, beyond their capabilities.

Maybe not #1 but certainly higher than #46. Definitely Staubach should be in the top 10. Maybe even the top 5.

When you’re talking Cowboy QBs and you’re talking Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, Danny White, Troy Aikman and Tony Romo, I’d say Staubach is definitely the greatest of those 5
