As president of the Sanding as a Hobby Club of America, and on behalf of all our many members, we would all like to extend our warm thanks for all you have done for our many hours of vicarious sanding enjoyment. We felt we were there with you sanding along with different grit sizes as well! Choosing a boat as the venue for your sanding hobby was pure genius. We look forward to many more weeks of sanding in a similar fashion on the sides of the boat, the inside bottom of the boat, the interior sides, the seats, the deck there is so much that that my head spins! ! It will be a sad day when it is a presentable boat ready for the water. But we feel sure that at that time you will spring on us a new sanding project of similar size! Perhaps a large floor or cargo aircraft! Maybe cafeteria tables or gymnasium bleachers! Oh the mere thought of countless more hours of sanding! You won't be happy on that boat away from your 320 wet/dry, your flexboard, your 80 grit, and your shop vac!

You keep this up and the next video will be an unedited, real time, marathon through sanding from day 1 with constant commentary and play by play such as. "I push this way, then I push this way, I push this way, then I get crazy and push that way, then I push this way, back that way. Please everyone pace yourself. We have 745.5 hours to go."

@@Bigeaux20 that sounds like my wife. I wish her Dad and my Dad were still alive to have seen and helped with my build. My wife has yet to even acknowledge my current restoration project. Keep up with your great build and know some people can’t wait to see it.

My dad is proud of how it's going, and I'm hoping I can get him over when the weather cools off to come spend a few days tinkering on it. I'm really just looking forward to telling him how he's doing everything wrong like he did to me for so many years. I'm totally kidding. He's taught me most of the foundation of what I know and what I am able to do today. I'm very lucky in that way. Hopefully he get's over soon.

Great work! I have done my share of boat building. Most people don't realize most of the work is getting it fared. I have always used Awlgrip products but I am very interested in Alexseal because you can buff the finish coat.

  • @Bigeaux20

I know that Awlgrip is the industry comparative, but the repair ability, the fact you can apply it with a roller instead of having to be sprayed is what pushed me to AlexSeal. I’m probably going to buff that bottom at some point but down the road I feel.

Here’s a question… Will it not float if it ain’t perfect?… I’m all for quality craftsmanship but just watching that video knocked 5 years off my life from just the thought of all that work.

I feel you, but keep in mind I committed to a couple things. First, to put in the work on the bottom side so that I was better skilled to make the top side very nice. Second, it was work, but it was also fulfilling. I want every aspect of my creation to look nice and as best as possible compare to the work professionals are capable of producing. All that work took about 15 working days total. The problem was there is an hour here, half a day there, etc... The trick is to get the craftsmanship with the least amount of effort possible. That's what I hope I learned to move forward. Appreciate you checking it out. Where do you think I went wrong?

  • @Timberns

@@Bigeaux20 I wouldn’t say you went wrong… I have been accused, on more than one occasion, of obsessing over perfection and I do like to take pride in my craftsmanship and accomplishments… But in that instance … I might have cut it a little shorter given that’s the side that only the fish see and saved some of that labor for the top side.

One thing I can tell you for the rest of your build, dump that TotalBoat Totalfair garbage....it's just way to thick to work with. Get yourself some Awlfair...it cost twice as much but you will use half as much because you can spread it as thin as a sheet of paper. Get yourself a quart and try it. Remember Andy gets paid to tell you Totalfair is the best, but you will never see it in a pro glass shop.

I appreciate the insight. I may go back and try my epoxy based fairing compound I got through my epoxy manufacturer. But, on the bottom I was just trying to minimize the things I was familiar working with at the time. Even that didn’t save me from some mistakes for certain. Feel free to make as many suggestions as you like.
