Those are some crazy velocities and energy foot pounds! The long gun is a bit more in energy foot pounds than a 7.62x39, which is pretty crazy for a pistol round.
I have loaded a similar with a 325 grain cast and my 4 5/8 Black Hawk. Frankly I can only shoot about a cylinder full and then must stop because of the wrist pain. At one point I thought I would like to get a Linebaugh or Freedom Arms, but with this load It is already more that my 75 year old wrist can find fun.

They told you that you would get old, didn’t they? But noooo. You just wouldn’t listen! There is some consolation however in the act that if in the real world you have only 5 or 6 coming at your wrist and your loads will handle all of them! And you can have a little.38+P in a cross draw holster after that, eh. PS your hip will start to hurt in two more years. Mine started hurting two days ago.! JWC
I've been handloading 45 "Magnum" Colt since 1990. A safety measure I use to quickly identify my magnum 45 loads from my standard 45 load is to spray paint the top and side of the bullets and the bottom of the primers with bright red paint for my magnum loads. With the red bullets and primer, I would instantly know the rounds I'm using is not standard 45 loads.

I do the same, and have been doing this trick myself since the 1980's. A solid way to identify max loads.
I found some load data on Hodgdon's website showing the exact specifications for loading "Blackhawk only" 45 L.C. +P using magnum powder. I loaded up 30 rounds and took them to the range. They were pretty stout. Not "Wrist breaking" stout, but stout. The range safety officer asked me "Is that a .500?". I wish we could have some water jugs or some kind of reactive targets at our range, but no... paper only.
These loads show why its become standard for magnum cartridges to be longer then thier parent case, 357 magnum will physically not fit in a .38 special chamber because its 1/8 inch longer and Elmer specifically did this to prevent such a mistake yet allow the magnum to fire the weaker version
I live in NW Montana and my bear load starts out with a 454 Casul case trimmed down to slightly below 45 colt length at 1.270 and cap it with a magnum small pistol primer. Then I take Hornady 350 grain 458 rifle bullets and size them down to 451. I use the Hornady #4502 RN or the #4503 RNFP: both bullets work exceptionally well. Then I back it up with 21.0 grains of Win 296 and a tight crimp. This load generates an average velocity of 1165 out of a Ruger Blackhawk 71/2-inch barrel with 1,047-foot pounds of energy (Ackley handbook). Checking the primers after firing shows normal signs of pressure and the empties shells extract very easily. I have self-patented this load and again this load is only for the Ruger Blackhawk or any other firearm of comparable strength and NOT for Colt clones. I call this load "The 45 Crandall Magnum." It outperforms the best factory 44*magnum.

From the look of the case you showed us, I'd call that a maximum load, That is about as flat a primer as I would hope to have to see from any load I had developed. For those who sneer at your well intentioned warnings, well... good luck to ya.

Absolutely right, I really hope people don’t try to do this. Those super spicy .45 Colt loads that manufacturers sell, such as some of the Buffalo Bore loads, they purposely make the bullet a little longer so you’re unable to load it into your SAA’s cylinder, if you do, you won’t be able to rotate the cylinder since the bullet won’t clear the cylinder gap. They do this as a safety precaution so if people did accidentally load them into their SAA, the gun won’t grenade in their hands.

I am now beginning to load a lot of average rounds of .38, .357, .45, 30-30 etc., in case they come for us. But everything else I shoot is hot and has flat primers because I have wanted to experiment with and then show others that any poor boy can defend his perimeter with an old 30-30 and even with a lever gun in .38/.357 which has accuracy and incredible energies from longer barrels! “Less is more,” and not everyone can afford a $3000.00 sniper rifle! I use vernier sights, but very serviceable and inexpensive scopes are available today if one wants to go that way. And these Rossi lever guns are affordable and shoot right out of the box! I have two of them. I love long barreled rifles, but I keep my 16” Rossi in .357 in my back seat and don’t go anywhere without it! And with my hand loaded lead gas checked bullet And an old peep sight, I can hit 500 yard steel all day long! And for an old guy who taught himself to shoot, that is a pretty satisfying thing to find out, eh, especially with a pistol caliber! Good comment! JWC

Even hot loaded 45 Colt has only about half the psi of a bottlenecked rifle round. Primer metal won't "move" the same way as in a, say, 270 Win. In revolvers, pay attention to how easy fired cases eject.

A flattened primer Is not always an indication of two high pressure, That’s only the primer speaking. In a revolver, The best measurement you get out of high experimental. Pressures will be case extraction as long as the cases fall out you’re OK. You have to push them out with light pressure you’re OK, But once you’re having to use any effort to push them out, it’s probably time to quit and back off until you find your tightest groups, And call it your maximum load. Bear in mind that is temperature dependent with most gun powders. If you work up your hottest load in the freeze of winter, Shooting that same load in warm or hot weather is gonna push you over the limits. H110 or Winchester to 296 Are going to give you the hottest loads. I’ve had good luck with blue dot as well, But that’s highly dependent on bullet type and weight.

Great video. The 45 Colt is one of those old calibers that just won't go away, and modern revolvers have pushed it's capability above that of 44 mag. To avoid confusion, I only load lead in 45 colt with blackpowder. Hot 45 colt, only jacketed bullets. Just my way of keeping out of trouble. BTW, you also have to be careful with 44mag and 45 colt in the same range sesson. As you probably well know 44 mag will load and fire in a 45 colt revolver. I don't know what would happen if you mixed them up, and don't want to find out. That is why I always shoot them separately.

@0neDoomedSpaceMarine

Not just thicker cylinder walls, but .44 Special was a brand new and modern casing at the time, while in those days, .45 Colt was still being made with balloon head brass on old existing tooling (like rimfire), sometimes with a sort of reinforcing cup in the bottom of the case, sometimes not. Either way, these old casings just couldn't stand the kind of hotrodding Keith wanted to do, no matter the gun, and he sought out .44 Specials for reasons like these. This history is why there has been the lingering perception that .45 Colt can't be hotrodded, even though this is no longer true and the ammunition today is made with a modern style of casing like .44 Special and .44 Magnum, which is why you can load it up real high like in this video. It'd be interesting to see some historically inclined KZreadr go over how the .45 Colt cartridge changed over the years, because it did a bunch.
Those are definitely cooking!!
Just a hint, load hot loads in nickel shells and light or normal loads in brass, or vise versa.
I've never used gas-checked bullets out of either of my .45 Colt guns, but I have fired the 300 grain Hornady XTP and 300 grain Speer jackeed softpoint out of my Blackhawk using 21 grains of H1110, getting 1100 fps. The recoil is very stout, but not painful.
The old Interarms Virginian Dragoons are as strong as a Ruger Blackhawk, so that's another one of those .45 Colts which should handle these loads with ease. They are easy to recognize at a glance for the horizontal fluting running on the sides of the top straps. Real early ones were pretty crap with oversized bores (as in, you'd put a .429 projectile into the bore of a .44 Magnum one and it just drops out the other end), but after they revamped production they became quite high quality.

I own three of the later Alexandria, VA produced examples, one each in .357 and .44 magnum and one in .45 Colt. Outstanding, very well made revolvers of the traditional single action variety. I bought all three of mine in the early 1980's, right before they went out of production. They were, unfortunately, about half again the cost of a Blackhawk, which is what I believe killed them in the end. I like them because the grips are much bigger than Colt and Ruger grips, allowing me to get all three fingers on the front, rather than my pinky on the bottom. The earlier Swiss made ones (Hammerli, I think?) were, like you say, junk. If you run across one of the Alexandria made guns, don't hesitate to grab it. Any single action fan would be happy with one. One tip I picked up from Veral Smith (LBT) when I ordered a 300 grain mold from him was to place the crimp groove in such a manner as to result in an OAL that would not fit into a Colt cylinder. The Blackhawk and Virginian Dragoon cylinders are both longer than Colts, allowing us to take advantage by feeding them ammo that's too long for Colts (or New Vaqueros). This requires a custom mold, of course, but I believe LBT can still supply those. Well worth it (if you cast) for the peace of mind and safety it offers.

Magnafluxing is an advanced procedure using strong magnetic fields to test structural integrity of metals. Assembled guns are then proof-tested before leaving the factory._ Also the writer: _My .45 Colt handload consist of a LEE 255-grain radiused flat-nose slug loaded over 8 grains of 231. This load generates around 900 FPS from pistols but broke 1,150 FPS from the Rossi. Accuracy was good, running about 1.5" at 50 yards for five shots. My 454 Casull load consisted of a 320-grain LBT LFNGC bullet loaded over 30 grains of H110. Velocity runs just under 1,600 FPS from most pistols but went 1,910 FPS from the Rossi. Accuracy was exceptional, running just over an inch at 50 yards._ And more: _The Hornady 454 Casull loads contained XTP bullets weighing in at 240 and 300 grains. The 240 version clocks out at 1,900 FPS from a handgun, while going over 2,200 FPS from the Rossi. The 300-grain slug goes 1,650 from a handgun and broke 2,000 FPS from the Rossi. Fantastic video once again (I'm only saying that because I don't want to have to make my own...😉) I've used similar loads in my own Rugers and Marlin 1894 (the one that is remarkably similar to yours), plus in my old Interarms Virginian Dragoon. Having a pretty good bucket full of Colts as well, I really, really didn't want one of these to ever wind up in one. My solution was to order a custom bullet mold from Cast Bullet Technologies and have Veral, the proprietor, cut the crimp groove in such a location that loaded rounds simply would not fit in the Colt. The longer cylinders of the full size Rugers (not the New Vaquero, which is thankfully same length as the Colt, so it won't accept these either), make this a ready solution for those of us that are set up to cast our own. I did have to file the stop on the rear of the cartridge lifter in the Marlin to allow for the longer round to clear the back of the barrel and pivot up into alignment, but that was pretty easy work with a mill file. Plenty of material there. The peace of mind that these longer than SAMMI cartridges provide is worthwhile, in my opinion. Oh, and a "plus 1" on the Bisley grip - best there is for this kind of recoil.

Way back in the early '90's, hot on the heels of the new NRA BPCR Silhouette game, Black Powder Target Rifle gained renewed interest. With no rules of our own, we began shooting matches under DCRA - Dominion of Canada Rifle Association - rules. We shot "mid range" matches of 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards using essentially the same rifles and loads as Silhouette. When we went to 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, those loads proved inadequate. This was before the larger capacity brass (.45-2.4, .45-2.6, etc.) became available. We were all using .45-2.1 (.45-70). There were two ways to boost velocity in an effort to make these effective 1,000 yard rifles - throat them out so we could seat bullets way out (effectively .45-2.4 with a short case) or duplex load them, which was then legal under DCRA rules. My loads were pretty typical. I settled on 7 grains of Reloder 7 under 53 grains of Goex FFG. Generally, our smokeless charges were about 10-15% of the black powder charge weight, with the total combined charge being about what we would use with just black. I used pretty typical stuff for the rest - .030" vegetable fiber wad, and one of three bullets - Lyman #457125 500g round nose, RCBS .45-500 BPS, or a Paul Jones "Creedmoor" of 540 grains, all cast from 20:1 and lubed with SPG. Compression ran about .200"-.240" depending on bullet, pretty much what I would look for with straight black. The compression served all of its usual purposes and, in addition, kept everything stacked properly in the case. The smokeless charge MUST go in first and not be allowed to be mixed with the black. This upped velocities enough to make for an effective long range load without having to seat three or four grease grooves out. I saw a guy drop his ammo box in the dirt one day with ammo loaded with all the grease grooves out - his match was over right there. No thanks. I also like to load my hunting ammunition in this manner. I use either the Lyman or the RCBS 400 grain flat nose. Not so much for the increase in velocity, but in case something goes wrong, and I need more than a couple of accurate shots before I get a chance to wipe the bore. While I would still blow tube at the matches, that isn't practical out hunting. And, really, there is no need if we are only trying to maintain "hunting accuracy". I can shoot my Marlin 1895 or Winchester 1886 pretty much all day without cleaning. Same cleanup at the end of the day (including the brass), just easier when at the range. While I used RE 7, any powder that meters easily in that burning range will do. Lots of guys liked one of the Vihtavuori offerings that is close to RE 7. @@Everythingblackpowder

There were two brothers (The Edgar brothers) when I live in Cody, WY. Back in the early 80’s that did some heavy loads like this in their (I know what you said) Colt revolvers. I use to watch them shoot 500 yard targets with their loads and guns. They told me they would send their guns back to Colt for inspection. But your load works well in the Ruger Blackhawks I have owned over the years. Awesome video and thanks for all the warnings… some reloaders scare me.
You mentioned ballistics roughly like that of 45-70. When I looked up the numbers, I found them to be roughly equivalent to Win. 30-30 in ft/lb., again in a rough comparison. That being said, in brush hunting; close range of 100 yards or less, the Mag. load of .45 does look to be a pretty good option for small to medium size deer. Albeit, from a rifle. And that is what I was hoping to see. My interest in .45 LC got me to thinking of both .45 Lever Action and Pistol; using the same ammo, of how I could potentially interchange ammo in both platforms for the ranch and for the range. While I'd first want the rifle to have the higher mv and ft/lbs. impact, the pistol would be just a backup. Given the load and action for the pistol, it would not be my first choice, but it is one that I feel delivers the impact needed in some circumstances. Of course, this is just what I am looking at for short distance ranch-range predator protection. For all other practical hunting, I'd use something a bit more traditional in a rifle, such as a .243, .308, 30.06, or 7mm... your choices may vary depending on game and distance. And for pistols, a .357 or .44 mag would be fine in any revolver as a hunting sidearm. But again, when was the last time you considered having the best of both worlds; that of using the same ammo for both your rifle and pistol? There is that .454 Casull that is available in both rifle and pistol... and it is a handful, literally. But perhaps the best versatile exchange when it comes to wanting something a bit more to take down a big bear.
Addendum, I re-chambered my 24” .357 Rossi Winchester’92 to .357 Maximum and shoot 200 grain Hornady pointed bullets and a 200 grain lead gas checked bullet out of it and get in excess of 2000 FPS! And those velocities and energies are equivalent to some of the old 38-55 rifles! I have Vernier sights on this rifle and even my 180 grain.357 round will deliver .38 Special energies out to 1000 yards-if I could see that far. Some day I’ll try it and see what happens. I do know that that 180 grain .357 bullet will hit the steel at beyond 650 yards!Again, “less is more.” Take care. Good video.
do a video on Dick Casull's tri-plex 45 colt loads found in PO Ackley's volume 1 & 2 .
Supposedly 45 colt + p is also too heavy of a load for the .410/45 colt firearms, such as the Taurus Judge, S&W Governor, and the Rossi Circuit Judge. I can only imagine this is due to the round having a space between the cylinder and the rifling, probably could malfunction and destroy the cylinder prior to reaching the barrel.
also i like the 629 better than the 29 but yeah i know what you mean the vaquero i had in 44 mag with some hotter loads would make my wrist numb sometimes after a box of buffalo bore and btw your videos dont suck been watching a bit i enjoy them all learn alot too and i share them

I’m based in the UK and really enjoying my black powder journey via your approach - let’s suck it and see but with a chronograph. I own a Uberti 1873 LC and have heard how the 1873 design is basically weak, hence your warnings. However, I would like to mention that Uberti do a .44 Magnum version of the 1873 - I contacted them directly and they said the only difference is the heat treatment of the components. So it would seem the 1873 design can take the pressure if the components are of the right specifications. However, this only applies to the .44 Magnum version.
Thanks for sharing! Do you prefer the Bisley grip over the standard Ruger Blackhawk?

I suppose if I had to choose I would say I prefer the Bisley, but I own both and shoot them regularly
And Freedom Arms .454 Casull
I have been looking for a video like this from someone who isn’t afraid of either litigation or the KZread censors. I have .45 colts in an old Model Vaquero and a Rolling Block 26” rifle on a reduced frame and just found 300 (actually averaging about 303) grain led gas checked bullets from RGB Bullets and have started loading them up with 21.0 grains of H110. I have to recheck the pistol (7 1/2” barrel) velocities but the 26” rifle is getting 1500 FPS & 1500 FPE! I’m going to go up a bit and look for a 1600/1700 velo/ener combination out of the rifle, and with the vaquero stop at 1100 FPS and 800 FPE which is a lot of energy from the old .45 cartridge. As it turns out, “less IS more!” Thanks for the courageous video . JWC

Great video as usual (didn't suck😊). I have thought about this a lot as I look into getting back into shooting. My reasoning is that BP and SAMMI loads in 45 Colt have quite a bit of thump as is so for elephant gun status I would be inclined to just get a 44 Mag or 454 so that I don't tempt fate.
Picking up a lightly used 45colt blackhawk today! Will be my 9th cart to reload. Need the 45auto cylinder since Ive got infinite amounts of those. Great vid as always. Just made my 2nd batch of bp using debarked lake tahoe willow and its fast!
Nice!

I really don't like shooting super hot rounds out of a handgun. I'm old and it hurts. However I do own a 480 Ruger that I love to shoot 400-grain cast bullets at about 850 fps, that doesn't hurt and it will roll a wild pig with no issues.
Thanks for the informative video. Last weekend I used HSM Bear Load 325 grain in my Ruger New Model Blackhawk (I already knew not to use it in my Uberti Cattleman) and the recoil was INSANE. Put my Smith and Wesson Model 29-10 to shame. I shot six rounds while using two hands on the grips and then one round one handed. Um, no thanks...now I'm looking to get a Henry rifle or similar in 45 lc for that kind of firepower.
I enjoy your reloading/shooting videos. I also reload 45 Colt for an 1872 open top conversion 7.5" pistol (cowboy loads only) & 1892 24" rifle (20gr H110, 255gr bullet). I've shot the 1892 w/23gr H110, but 20gr is easier on my (75 year old) shoulder.

ive been looking for a staut 45 colt load to shoot out of my 454 casull(since i h avent been able to find 454 casull cases around this neck of the wood), and out of my Ruger redhawk in 45colt. Not sure if this load would work in my Vaquero tho...
Paco Kelly has a great article on +p loads for 45 colt. I use a couple grains less of H110 under a 300 grain XTP and it is absolute murder on deer, blackbear and coyotes. The load has over 1600ft lbs of energy from my Winchester 1892 with a 20" barrel. The 45 colt can easily surpass 30-30 and 44 mag in "killing power". The only area where it falls short against 30-30 is trajectory.

This is a Linebaugh load from some 20 years ago. It definitely kicks ass.
How about a Winchester 94? Mine handles, accurately, 250 to 300 grain loads from Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, Cor Bon ( I still have a few of those left), and Underwood. I'm not equipped to re-load, so this is what I shoot 50 yard one inch groups with.

Awesome rounds. I am a big fan of the 45 Colt because it’s it’s versatility. This looks like a winning load right here. I have my first Bisley Blackhawk on the way to me but in 44 mag. May have to pick up another in 45 Colt for this. Already have a Marlin 1894.

300gr bullet at 1600 is 45/70 territory. I used to run my 45 colts about that warm out of my 20" 1894 but I stopped... just weren't as fun to shoot. There isn't much you can't anchor with that load though... I know you said within reason, but a 280gr roundball out of a 58 caliber muzzleloader on the upper end is moving about 1500fps and that's bear, moose, and elk medicine if there ever was one.

Only recently started shooting 45 Colt and I do love it. So question, what about the Henry Big Boy? I have a Black Hawk and will try it, but like to pair it with my Henry.

Great job! I am your witness to the fact that ya made it extremely clear the dangers of wrong gun for wrong cartridges. As one who tries to like himself as a Elmer Keith of the cap and ball world, and a longtime resident of Wyoming I would have far more confidence in that load in those two formats than any 10mm out there. I may not have said this before but I got my start at pushing performance in 1982 working as a wrangler in the sunlight basin of Wyoming with a Remington new model army on my side. Why you may ask? Simple I was 18 and we both know what that meant. The load was a combination that of a 240 grain cast for gascheck and powder combination I'll keep to myself. However i will say that the principles commonly used by serious custom handloader for accuracy and performance apply even when system involves a nipple and percussion cap. Let's not forget common sense. I enjoy your content

Holy cow!! 20-what grains of H110 n a 300gr bullet?? I know that load level from pushing 240s from my 44Mag. This is a SERIOUS handgunner's load.
Nice! But I thought this was going to be about the "Black Powder Magnum" and involve a Colt Walker. And at some point one gets a 454 Casull or a 460 or 500 Smith and calls it a day.

If you want, good information, look up, Linebaugh talking about the subject. It goes very deep into the subject about the 44 magnum. I think it was published 30 years ago so it’s cool to see this guy reinventing the wheel and so many other young people reinventing the wheel without the correct ways of doing it.
