44 Survivor Pigeons VS. Falcons and Hawks

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The survivor pigeons still have to resist for the rest of the winter but I decided to present them all because this was the hardest year and the ones that made it for now are truly remarkable. Because of disease this is the worst team of young birds and the old birds also struggled - it was the cold season with the highest humidity I can remember. I even lost 2 five year old females and this says a lot about this winter.
Although the falcon has the highest success rate, this season was difficult for the following reasons, in this order:
#1. Disease through the worst weather for pigeons (cold + high humidity... incredibly rainy winter).
#2. Hawks madness insisting at the loft with continuous attacks.
#3. Falcons (2 rival couples in the area - the good thing being that the dominant falcon saved my pigeons many times by chasing the other falcon).
As of January 15, 44/70 pigeons survived the natural selection race. The ones taken by the birds of prey were more or less also weakened by disease. While in the previous years the falcon/hawk percent was about 80%/20%, this year the hawks are really pushing the limit.
- Disease: 7
- Hawk: 8
- Falcon: 10

Those pigeons in the 0:35 second scene were very astute. They saw the falcon who was above them, and they negated his height advantage by circling tight around the house, and then when the falcon had dove down where they were, they immediately go straight up and use their superior flying ability to climb straight up because the falcon with his long wings cannot climb nearly as fast. These pigeons are natural born skyfighters, far superior to any human.

@@death5913 pigeons are every bit as smart as crows, and crows have the mental advantage of being a carnivore. Most prey animals are nowhere near a match of wits for a predator. Pigeons are one of the exceptions. They are also tough as woodpecker lips. A homing pigeon got shot through the body with a .30 caliber military rifle bullet in WW1. It got shot down, recovered it's wits and flew off, making it to it's US Army handler after a four or five mile flight, with a metal message capsule, and shredded leg flapping along behind it hanging on by ligaments. An entire battalion of American soldiers survived the war because of that female pigeon's strength, stamina and will to return to it's home and family.

It is very interesting to see the differences in behavior between domesticated pigeons and their wild ancestors, the rock pigeons. I have free flight Scottish rock pigeons. For example, when a peregrine falcon comes they never go up. The rock pigeons then always fly very low. The peregrine falcon doesn't like that. But there are even more differences in the behavior of rock pigeons to domestic pigeons. Still a very exciting video.

Never seen or heard of free flight Scottish rock pigeons. Interesting. Are they pure rock pigeons - the blue bars you see on cliffs? I didn't even know they can be domesticated. Most of the racing pigeons also fly low when falcons appear, just mine go so high, many fanciers asked me why they do that and I don't really know. Probably they feel more safe there since there are many hawk attacks at the ground level too - so they have to face double predation, hawks down and falcons up. But I also selected them for flying performance, I don't like them to stay down or hide in the loft, I only keep and breed from the ones that fly a lot even when there are birds of prey.

@@Pigeonmaniacom You can buy rock pigeons on wildlife exchanges, for example. There are also some subspecies. They are all blue with white backs and black bands. They are only half the size of a racing pigeon. You can't really tame them or train them. They have a mind of their own. When I enter the enclosure, I always knock on the door first and talk so that the pigeons don't panic. I also always have to wear the same clothes. It is an animal that you just enjoy watching and that has kept its independence. But I also love racing pigeons. My father always had some and was also in the club. Pigeons are wonderful animals.

@@tomwander40 I hope you will post a video with them. It is interesting that while being so wild they still enter a loft and live there, and they don't just fly away when you let them free out of the loft. I guess they also breed there. Haha, great point about having to wear the same color clothes - you are probably the only pigeon fancier that understands me when I say that I have to wear the same clothes, otherwise some of my pigeons panic a lot, I had some of them flying for hours around the loft when I changed my usual black clothes to yellow. My winter flying pigeons are also smaller than the usual racers, some of them are like you say about half the size of normal racing pigeons and they are also light, I remember the smallest females weight is just a bit above 300 grams while a short distance racer that isn't fit can be above 600 grams. So I guess this raptor selection and my preference for small pigeons shape them in the direction of their wild ancestors as a phenotype.

@@Pigeonmaniacom The pigeon rises higher in order to avoid the attacks of the peregrine falcon. The higher it is, the higher it becomes difficult for the falcon to hunt. When the pigeon descends and the peregrine falcon comes from the sky, it is easier for him to catch the pigeon.

Aww, man! Fara ascunzisuri. Doua stoluri de porumbei, in plin zbor, incearca sa supravietuiasca atacurilor soimului, iar in imediata apropiere sta cu mana pe tragaci uliul. Iar ne bagi in copilarie cateva minute, iar ne scoti in lupta maturitatii, ne faci praf.

Hi Graham, yes, I like that bird too. It is very light, you can't even hear him flying, and this helps with birds of prey around as it means more agility. The weather was great, warm and sunny, I paired them, and now the winter is back, it has been snowing nonstop for the last 2 days and it is very cold. They started to lay eggs yesterday. Every spring after I pair them up the winter comes back angry. It happened like this absolutely every year. lol

I think the second Falcon was a Lanner Falcon, longer tail, less speed but more maneuverability than the Peregrine, he managed to catch the pigeon.

It seems that this peregrine falcon has been specializing in high-flying pigeon breeds for more than one year. A minimum of unnecessary actions, everything is done quite competently. But nevertheless, an adult goshawk at the age of 3-5 years more confidently manages a whole flock of pigeons, choosing a weak pigeon, and more effectively crashes into a flock of pigeons, especially when the flock leaves for landing

There are no high flying pigeon breeds here, fanciers only fly racing pigeons and >95% of them are locked in the lofts from September till April.

You need to breed a lot more pigeons and select. The ones that survive will get better and better at avoiding falcons. Make sure they are 100% healthy, they have no chance with the falcon when they are even 90% healthy.

Yes, they circle near the hawks when the hawks are in a position not good for the attack. I guess they do that to show them they are strong or to keep a minimum distance so that the bird of pray can't gain speed to attack.
