  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    They usually get over it and are fine, but learn from it. For example the ones that separate from the flock and get chased, won't separate again so easily. Also if they get a bit overweight and fall behind the flock and get chased, they stop eating or eat less for a while. This might be something hormonal, not sure they are SO smart. 😆Fanciers use to say they never recover mentally and will be caught the next time but I think that is not the case, if they are taken, it is because they were lacking agility, health, etc, like the first time. I have one example from this flock, one of the biggest and most heavy youngsters got caught by the hawk and carried a lot. After the hawk landed I was able to get there and save the pigeon, it had open wounds. After recovering it started flying again and almost got caught by the falcon, giving it another wound. It recovered and got really light compared to the initial weight and today is still alive and flying well.

    Man back in the days , i use to have a flock of 58 racing pigeons in the country side , only mountains and trees around , you cannot imagine how terrifying it was for me to always lose a pigeons in each release , many hungry predators around , falcons , eagles hawks and many more , my pigeons reach the level of not having any will to leave the loft . I remember from 58 to 19 pigeons lasts and fight to survive.

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    @Pigeonmaniacom

    Hi Ismail, and welcome. Yes, some days can be terrifying, especially in the beginning. Over the years you can select more adapted birds and refine the feeding so you reduce the losses. It is really satisfying when they escape and end the day with no losses. Of course there are areas where it is impossible to keep pigeons but those are rare cases. In winter my birds get attacked almost daily, sometimes by a pair of falcons and a hawk waiting for them at the loft. They have to adapt... for me pigeons = flying.

  • @Dimarik73rus

    @Dimarik73rus

    @@Pigeonmaniacom Yes, but the attacks of adult hawks are still lacking. One pair of adult hawks is enough. And doves will not just graze on the ground near the dovecote. They will be very reluctant to leave attics, and when landing, they will immediately run into the attic. An adult and a young hawk are completely different machines.

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    @Pigeonmaniacom

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Dimarik73rus This is why I said some areas are impossible. It depends how far you are from the trees, how many hawks there are and the prey available. If you are the only fancier there, it won't work, probably. However, here is an interesting fact. I know a young fancier that has the loft in the mountains basically, and right above his loft there is an almost vertical forest of big trees. He has mature hawks attacks DAILY, even in hot summer they ambush attack in the garden. They took about 200 young pigeons from him just last year. But he insisted. He brought some feral street pigeon youngsters in autumn and along with the last batch of young racers from autumn he continued, but with an open loft all day long and night (this improved things a lot). By the beginning of winter he still had ~10 pigeons, half of them being racing pigeons. There were many days with no losses, even weeks. Those pigeons had food available in the yard and had to go out and eat. They also spent time on the roofs. They kept flying a lot when they got attacks from 1-2 hawks. Saw them disappearing over the forest in the fog. Fascinating. When they went too high in the sky, falcons attacked. Now he has 6 remaining, 2 of them being racing pigeons.

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

  • @Dimarik73rus

    @Dimarik73rus

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Pigeonmaniacom Trees do not play a special role, the hawk will be effective even on the football field. Everything is correct. The intensity of the hawk's attacks depends only on the abundance of game it hunts. And one more important point. It is the abundance of natural game, the wild food of the hawk. A hawk will not occupy territory just because of pigeon lovers (pigeon breeders). He needs constant food. Stable wild prey. The pigeon breeder (amateur) may be offended tomorrow and close the attic, and the hawk will have nothing to feed his children. The loss of 200 pieces is very big. I must have seen this amateur's video on your site? If so, then there is a mistake that pigeons constantly graze on the ground and on the roof. This does not happen in nature. As soon as a flock of wild pigeons suffer losses due to the unfortunate location of their home, they react either by massively replenishing the losses through breeding, or simply looking for a new place to live.

    Mayday mayday I'm being chased by the hawk what should I do. Fly dove fly. 😅 That was a really nice attack by the peregrine falcon and of course the dove did everything right. It's an art to catch a pigeon at these speeds. Craziness! You still have action in the sky. I only let my pigeons out 30 minutes before sunset, then the hawk doesn't come anymore. My pigeons are flying now that many bad ones have gone. I still have a few bad ones, but they don't go out of the dovecote. And the good pigeons go out and fly. They don't fly for long because it gets dark quickly, but at least 10-15 minutes. That's enough for a start. How long do your pigeons fly? When I turned on the video, at first I thought I turned on a video of myself because of the song. Thank you for showing us what is happening in your sky 👌😅👍. Seeing it live is of course a different experience.

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    Yes, thank you for the soundtrack idea, it is like it was created for us, I love it. You thought it is your video, eh? 🤣🤣🤣 My pigeons fly about 1 hour daily, more or less depending on weather. If it is really bad, I call them inside after 15-20 minutes of maintenance flying. The worst days with combined hawk + falcon attacks, they go over 1,5 hours of intense fast flying at the ground, then high in the sky, then ranging far away until I can't see them. Recently they started to leave with the falcon so far my zoom is useless and I can't film anything. 😤 When they finally get back some of them are exhausted, I can easily see the best ones. After we got snow and freezing temperatures I got mature hawks too, which is a different competition. 😬 I've just removed 3 lazy/weak ones. So you keep them with this schedule to minimise losses and breed more pigeons I guess. Make sure they don't mate with the bad lazy ones, or you get more lazy pigeons to fill the loft. 🤣 From my experience: lazy + good = lazy babies. 🤣🤣🤣

Yes adult birds of prey hunt differently. Much more aggressive. A few days ago I had a peregrine falcon. But didn't get any. Pressed the record button too late and you only see him flying away. sheep. Wanted to catch a dove like the hawk over the roof. The pigeons were lucky there.
