An ls swap just makes the lovers hate one of their own. And where did the 8500 ripums go? For one on a 401 that would have been legendary. If they got that to spin. (They got the cash) and for two on that motor it was only a cam and maybe springs(if they were not already good enough) away from 8500. Love this show, and a good ls. So not hating on it. The problem an AMC V8 is similar to a Pontiac V8, due to the limitation of the heads they have no more potential than a SBC, less really because of the mass of the rotating assembly. Plus in both cases you lugging an extra 50lbs.

Always a pleasure to watch all these personable and knowledgeable guys. HA - and TOMMY's accent always makes me feel most welcome. But would have been a 'nicer' build using a BIG AMC engine - I am assuming one can purchase aftermarket heads etc for an AMC (forgive my ignorance) - but still going to be a nice driver even with a CHEV in it. I am not 'anti-LS' - but it is sort of like 'everyone' wants to drop a BARRA into something - in the end - the novelty of LS and BARRA into everything sort of wears off (albeit the BARRA not quite as numerous as LS swaps - yet - HA). Would have been a pleasure to watch an AMC being given the 'modern' stuff. Have a nice day all - stay safe. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

I agree with most of the constituents, a LS seems like a cop out. A hemi or a stroker 401 would be more appropriate. The LS is cool but not in every dang thing.

The reason they probably didn't build a AMC motor is they couldn't just order the parts on line. The volume just wasn't there for the aftermarket manufacturers to bother with much stuff. Cams are one thing. All you need there are master lobe profiles for grinding the am lobes (CNC cam grinders weren't even a gleam in Landis's* eye then). Heads and intake manifolds you are talking castings. Castings require patterns. Patterns before 3D printing came along were pretty labor intensive. The 390/401 blocks along with the Special Service blocks had heavier webbing on the mains to support 4 bolt main bearings on #2, 3, and 4. The 390 and 401 had forged cranks and rods. Forged cranks were also available on 360s iirc. I do know that the forged cranks were very hard on the production machinery. In actuality the nodular iron cranks are suitable for any street car you would want to live with. The stock dog leg heads flow very well out of the box. The major problem with the AMC V-8 (the 290 thru 401) is the oiling system really isn't up to sustained high RPM operation. The problem is the oil galley for the right hand side lifters also feeds the crankshaft bearings. This can lead to oil starvation problems on the rear end of the crankshaft and rod bearings. Note this is not an issue in normal vehicle operation. The gear set in the oil pump is actually longer than say a stock SBC. But because the pump is part of the front cover it makes an aftermarket upgrade a bigger problem. In 1970 Penske had engine problems with their Javelin motors due to oiling issues. In 71 and there after the Trans-Am series allowed dry sump systems. After that oiling issues were never an issue. Short deck aluminum blocks were cast for the Indy car program. These engines produced over 1000 HP and an AMC V-8 actually had the highest lap speed ever set by an Indy car for a number of years. Bobby Alison got caught using a roller cam in Nascar. But then every body else cheated to. There were also dealer install or parts counter parts that included some unusual pieces. Vented four wheel disc brake upgrades were available that were actually from Porsche.

You do realize that AMC literally made nothing on their own right? Just about every part on any AMC is from some other manufacturer. AMC was well known back in the day for using Ford, GM, and Chrysler motors. They always called them an AMC motor, but the reality was it was some other manufacturers engine that they repurposed for their use.

@@captainredneck0683 dude u r beyond clueless. Straight sixes and ALL V8's were AMC period. Yes some parts i.e. Motorcraft carburetors etc... AMC did source some parts throughout their vehicle line-up but only in context that the parts were the best of whatever company had to offer. Do some research - you'll be enlighted.

I'm a GM fanboy all day, every day. But the Javelin and AMX have always had a special place in my heart and will own one some day. While I love all the Powernation shows, they ruined this Javelin by putting a LS in it. AMC built lots of amazing engines that could have been put in this with aftermarket support. Even a Chrysler LA/Magnum engine would be closer.
