426 Hemi ( 2nd generation Chrysler HEMI )

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today it’s an engine episode Wednesday, Chrysler would build three generations of the hemi. The first generation was produced from 1951 through 1958. It was available in everything but Plymouth.
The second generation picked up in 1964, but was only available as a race and you would have to know somebody who knew somebody who could get you that engine. It wasn’t available for the buying public. Built a race in Plymouth and Dodge cars for the NASCAR stock car circuit, but was ultimately bad from NASCAR because it wasn’t sold to the public allegedly. The real reason was more like Ford and Chevy could not compete with that at that time.
It’s important to note Chrysler would offer three versions of the 426 of which was the RB block version and two versions of a 426 hemi the race version and the street version.
Enjoy this episode be sure to stick around for name that tune, as well as would you rather

With regard to the 425 horsepower ratings, something that seems to have been forgotten over the years is that going back to 1957, there was an agreement reached between the manufacturers to put an absolute limit on advertised horsepower ratings at 425. That is not to say they agreed to actually limit horsepower, just the rating of it. The manufacturers did this proactively, out of fear of government intervention. The agreement was honoured by both Ford and Chrysler, none of the Ford 427 variants nor the Chrysler 426s was ever rated higher, but it should be obvious that a 12.5 compression Race HEMI would make more power than a 10.25 compression mildly cammed Street HEMI. The Chevrolet division of GM was the only member of the group that on more than a few occasions strayed from the plan, but we came to expect that sort of behaviour from them.

It was the Ford 427 SOHC that was banned by NASCAR, not the 429. Chrysler already had a DOHC 426 HEMI in development if they needed it, as in if Ford got their cammer approved. Chrysler also had a big bore / short stroke 426 HEMI in development, it had very big valve sizes, and was designed for significantly higher sustained RPM operation, that engine would have been the answer to the BOSS 429, if it was needed.

The Fords were 427s, they tried some radically different cylinder head variants, but they never got the chance to run the Cammer, and the Boss 429 starting in 1969. Chrysler ran the 426 wedge, but it didn’t get the job done, which led to the rebirth of the HEMI, this time as a 426, and that was 1964.

The Chrysler Hemi engines are my all-time favorite power plants. I had a factory repair manual for Chrysler engines when I was young, and I memorized the inner workings of the 426 Hemi pictured in the cutaway illustrations. They are engineering and industrial art, and I still love them. I never got to own one, because they were too impractical. I can still dream though.

There was a bit of controversy about the 'street' Hemi because before it started to race in the 1966 Daytona 500 issues were coming from the teams with block failures bad enough that the day before the race Chrysler showed up at the track with brand new special blocks for the teams. It brings up the issue, 'were these engines really stock?'

I'm intrigued as to the appearance of the Jensen Interceptor in this vid. The Interceptor never came with a Hemi, only the 383 & 440 RB engines. Yes, there are a couple of Hemi Interceptors in circulation, but they were later engine swaps... Edit - the Mk.4 Interceptor came with a 360, can't forget those...

Plum Crazy + a Jensen for me - the Monteverdi's beautiful, but they're more a collector thing. The Jensen's a usable comfortable car, the Hai, not so much... That said, the Jensen Interceptor never came with a Hemi. It had either a 383RB or 440RB engine. While there are a couple of Hemi Interceptors around, they were all later engine swaps.

Well, I'll put it this way, 1st I'd go for the '66-'67 Hemi Charger. 2nd, I'd go for a Hemi 'cuda. When I was a teenager, my grandmother had a 1965 Dodge Coronet 4dr. with a 273 V8. I went through the owner's manual and I was surprised to see that there were 2 426 V8's available. Ofcourse one was the Hemi, but in order to get it, you had to buy a non-streetable race car version of the Coronet. Plymouth would have been the same situation. I'm not sure if the Jensen Interceptor III was available with a 426 Hemi, but I saw plenty of them with a 383 or 440. I remember that if you bought a new Mopar with the 426 Hemi, it had absolutely no warranty. Zip! At the time, any other Mopar would have had a 5yr./50,000 mi. warranty, which they were very proud of and a 1st in the industry. There wasn't a time, into the 2k's, that the 426 Hemi wasn't produced. Crate engines, then disassembled engines and back to crate engines. I had a friend who had a 1970 factory 440 Dodge Challenger and when he restored the car from the ground up in maybe 2010, he dropped a crate 426 Hemi in it. He also had a 1970 'cuda 440 that he restored to stock.

Something to note on the horsepower ratings. Many believe that Chrysler's rating was intentionally false but that doesn't appear to be the case. The 425 hp rating @ 5000 rpm was very accurate. I've seen a few dyno tests on street Hemi's that were rebuilt to factory specs and they rate pretty close to that @ 5000. It's just not the whole truth. They push that number close to 475 @ 6000 and number continues to climb. So Chrysler's 425 @ 5000 isn't a lie but it's not the peak hp. Surely this was done to help keep insurance cost down. WYR #3 -- Gotta have that shaker hood 'Cuda.

MOPAR. Those of us who played with fast cars knew MOPAR was the only way to go. The hemi was a beast and a blast all at the same time. I got to drive a hemi Cuda once, OMG! MOPAR just made better engines, the 273, the 318, both the old and new motor would have a Chevy 350 for lunch. The 340 and 360 small blocks were fast. Then we have the big blocks and really big blocks. The 361, the 412, the 412 wedge, think lettered 300's. The 389 commando, the 440, this motor came in a few configurations, 350 hp, 375 hp and the shaker 425 hp. But the 426 hemi was king. Reminisce of an old man

It ruled drag racing SS class for decades. One comment, the 350hp shown for the street HEMI was the 1971 net HP rating. Seems low but was higher than any other net HP street motor at the time.

70 cuda 70 Superbird I still think the reason the hemi got banned from NASCAR was because Ford and GM were a bunch of whiny little crybabies. They were whipped and they knew it. At least Ford tried. But GM instead of trying to build a better mousetrap they just complained and whined about it until NASCAR caved in. At least drag racing still allowed the hemi to perform proving that drag racers were smarter than the guys who did nothing more than drive around making left hand turns going around in a circle. IMO the 426 hemi Is the greatest engine ever built.

@@What.its.like. I believe that without the vision of Carroll Shelby Ford wouldn't have given a crap about LeMans. Chevy was always competitive in drag racing But I would say that came from enthusiasts more than corporate headquarters. With the exception of John De Lorean, I don't think anyone in the upper levels of general motors really cared about performance cars. Of course that all changed after the GTO and when all the other manufacturers started jumping on the performance car bandwagon. Then GM realized they had to keep up. I mean after 55 GM started putting bigger and bigger V8's into their automobiles but I think that was more to keep up with all the other manufacturers who were pushing big V8 engines. I think they started to realize the "win on Sunday sell on Monday strategy" was paying off for The other automakers. So they jumped in. Of course I was a preteen and a teen during that era so most of my views on this are strictly from what I thought at that time.

Cuda and Superbird for WYR. The Monteverde was a Swiss car (if you can imagine that), very low production but truly a supercar for it's time. The Jensen Interceptor was British and filled a similar role but more of them were made. Not many Hemi's were produced compared to many other big-block engines, and probably half of them were blown up or worn past further use in racing. Performance was selling so it only made sense to add Plymouth there. The Hemi was a tempermental beast; it was unbeatable if everything was set up perfectly but it was a beech to tune perfectly, and it wouldn't stay tuned perfectly for long. The hemispherical combustion chambers allowed for the biggest possible valves, but in reality the hemi shape isn't very good at achieving a great fuel burn which is why everyone else used wedge-shaped combustion chambers. Weird as it may seem, a fair number of Hemi's went into station wagons and four-door cars as Chrysler was freer with engine and transmission choices than Ford or GM who restricted their top engines to certain cars, and sometimes even certain models of those. These were the best years for Chrysler and the Hemi will always be legendary.

I never had a chance to drive a car with a Hemi or work on one. I'd choose the 1969 Dodge Charger RT and the 1970 Plymouth Superbird. When the Superbird came out there was a Plymouth dealer on Rt. 9 in Wellesley Massachusetts that had 3 of them that they parked next to the road. They were a pink one, a blue one, and a yellow one. My Dad was talking about trading in his 1964 Impala SS on a new car and I lobbied hard for him to buy one of those. He just laughed at me. He thought the wing was silly and he was a Chevy guy. I did a valve job to it at 155K and wanted to take it to 200K. At 175K someone ran a stop sign trying to shoot the gap between me and the car in front of me in 5 o'clock traffic. I barely slid into him but he was going so fast it spun by car around and bent the frame. I sold it to a body shop that fixed it and sold it to someone else.
