$425 Japanese Rotary Scissor vs String Trimmer and Edger
Ойын-сауық
The rotary scissor is getting quite a bit of attention in the lawn care community - but are they worth the money for a DIYer?
Here I review the rotary scissors and show how they measure up to a string trimmer and bladed stick edger.

Thanks for the best review/blow by blow of this rotary trimmer I've seen. I purchased this recently and def agree that it is a major add to anyone's toolbox serious about their lawns.
Never touched a lawn in my life, but was recommended this video. Thanks KZread.
That rounded edge looks amazing! It's like a tiny little hedge running all around your property. Nice work!
the rounding off the edges look crazy! love it
Thanks for all the great content. Im just starting on my yard after years of neglect from previous owner.

How much was it?
Great video. I bought one of these as well. My edge game leveled up. I agree with your suggestions. Much appreciated.
!!! THANK YOU !!! I found the same unit on eBay for a fraction of the 400+ I was planning on spending. This thing TORE through multiple years worth of Amazoy grass that my Ryobi edger attachment would stall the 40v powerhead with a 12ah battery. I couldn’t be happier.
Happy Independence day Alyn! 🇺🇸 I'm glad I'm not the only person that falls over random things in the yard 🤣. Interesting comparisons between the weed whacker, edger and scissors. The cost is what's keeping me away from getting those currently. I'm pushing my luck right now as it is with my wife. She is buying a lawn mower from her uncle for me.
You can avoid the wear on the housing by walking the turf side and feeling along the hard edge with the bottom blade. Also, these are available with larger diameter blades that help make it an even better edger and much easier to edge from the driveway/sidewalk side without damaging the housing. Try edging from the turf side with the unit held low and projecting out in front of you.
Happy 4th of July to all the LCN family. Enjoyed the video Allyn.

oh yes, these are the way to go. I have had them for over a year now and they are my go to edgers
When I was in the army, the highest ranking enlisted soldier in each unit is the CSM (Command Sergeant Major). He would make soldiers get their issued shovel AKA entrenching tool and make them dig out at least 4-6 inches of edging from the sidewalk to the grass. Why didn’t someone come out there with an edging machine? maybe it was just punishment. But it looked sharp….. never walk on the CSM’s grass! I had a very bad black top, jagged edge street in front of my house and I would edge back 4-6 inches and made it look sharp. My wife would say, “I see you have the Sergeant Majors edges going on out front!”

Thanks for this awesome info video!
Thanks for the information, I had not heard of this product before. Think I will give it a try.
Amazing. Now I'm considering getting one for my personal lawn projects.
Planning to pick one up later in the year. From ground level your lawn looks more like a hedge than grass. I prefer short ryegrass myself, but I like how you're doing something different.
Yes Al!!!!!!!!! Def can't live without it after you own it! Love we got the same EGO set up! Def nice to be able to round the edges too something different neighbors can't wrap their mind around!!!!!!😂 😊🤙🏾🙏🏾 Happy 4th!!!! 🎆🎇
Good review. Would love to see a fresh St Aug patch/repair video at the factory. I've got some spots I'm trying to re-sod, but want it to merge without too much interruption to established thick edges.
I had a Redmax Reciprocator and it was so precise! had to sharpen the blades every day when I got home, and it didn't disperse edge clippings well... also it was really heavy and slow as an edger... but otherwise great tool for use in sensitive areas like around windows and cars at the curb.
Happy Independence LCN! Thanks for the help dominating!
Looking good!! Great review!

This is exactly what i was looking for, I was already looking at the EGO trimmer to replace my original one that does not have the exchangeable head.
Bought one of these about 5 months ago haven’t set it up yet but it looks like a game changer compared to a string edger
I think this tool would be well suited for clearing heavy brush and briars. It's basically a round hedge trimmer.
Love the rounded edges!!
There is actually a replacement blade set that is a bit larger and made specifically for edging purposes which keeps the housing off the concrete, but of course can also be used for grass. Just gonna add a little more weight to the head.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Happy 4th of July to you and family.
Wait this is the abandoned track that Cleetus picked up. This video is full circle for me. Time to subscribe. That place has come a long long way!
Reminds me of the old school manual rotary scissor edgers the old guys down the block still use in Chicago.
Wow! It's a really cool video.. big LIKE!! Thank you so much for sharing the video. My friend~!!!💗💗💗
Great to see you've adapted it to an EGO power-head. I like EGO products and already have the Scissor head mounted on my Echo Gas power-head and while this scissors doesn't require lots of power, I often wondered if I could get it onto an EGO if I bought one. I find myself almost at an idle with the gasser but still need ear plugs. Going to electric would negate ear plugs and I could start super early in the morning while cooler out as well. I never use it for edging into the dirt since that dulls the blades quicker. I sharpen fairly often with an angle grinder with 60 grit flap disc and follow the angle to quickly give a sharp fresh edge. I planted lots of young spruce trees and this is a much better option over the string trimmer where one slip and you can instantly girdle a tree. Ask me how I know. Only thing a line trimmer is good for is chain link fences in my opinion. One area that I avoid using the scissors is by flower cages and chain links. Otherwise its super awesome for making nice circles around trees as low as you want and keeping it uniform.

The rounded edges are fire! 🔥
07:40 I dealt with my uneven blacktop edges by cutting them straight. I did this with a cheap corded circular saw and a blade for cutting concrete pavers. I made an 8 foot long track from 1/4" plywood and a straight 1x3. Together the saw and the blade cost me $60 (20 years ago). Make the width slightly wider than the distance from the edge of the saw base that rides along the 1x3 to the blade. The first time you use it you will cut off the excess leaving you with a perfectly trimmed track for that saw. Now snap a chalk line on the blacktop and set the track right on the line. Set the saw for a 1/2 depth of cut to start and cut the blacktop. Go back and recut deeper until you reach max depth. This will not be enough to all the way through but it will be deep enough. When you get the whole line cut go back with a 3" wide brick chisel and 2# drilling hammer and knock off the ragged blacktop. You'll be left with a nice, straight edge that will be easy to trim. I did this 20 years ago on my driveway, and it's paid off every year since. The other place this tool shines is edging flower beds and your mulch beds at the base of a tree. It's used at golf courses all the time to trim along sand traps and flower beds.
Those rounded edges are straight 🔥 got them barber sculpting skills!
Loving my rotary scissors😁 🇯🇵 it seems like more and more this rotary scissors ar introduced on KZread-lawn care community! awesome~

The main reasons I don't use this Japanese Rotary Scissor with my Ego Power Tools is due to their maintenance requirements. They require EP (extreme pressure) grease at regular interval and their blades require sharpening just like lawn mower blades. Unlike a string trimmer which you can simply replace to string or the blade edger which you can either replace the blade, this rotary scissor seems like too much maintenance for me.

We can see it Allyn gets in the groove!
I work for a company and we use this type of equipment to tear up grass vs a shovel ..or great new bed for plants
Man Im pretty good at not hitting stuff with the string trimmer. When you mow 50 hrs a week by yourself, you become very efficient with your lawn care equipment. For the money, string trimmer it is for me. Happy 4th my friend!

whatever... the string always dig the dirt and separate the grass and its soil from the curb. I don't trust any string trimmer user to "edge" the curb and sidewalk. This blade scissor seems to be a good alternative... but string trimmer is not an "edger"

Rotary Scissors look interesting. I've been seeing them around but for $425 yikes 😬😅 I'll stay with my edger and string trimmer combo 🤣.
I completely replaced my string head with the rotary shear about 4 years ago and haven't looked back once 😉
Love my rotary scissors!
The problems you pointed out with the string trimmer can be cured by wearing a full shoulder harnesses it allows you to hold the string trimmer tite next to you and you can step into objects like trees walls and delicate things slowly with out the problems of the trimmer jumping into and gouging out things especially with bigger trimmers it also makes things like the round corners easier the bigger models with the t-bar handles and using a harness make scalped and trimming different shapes very easy I know it doesn’t look as sexy as cutting grass with no shirt and shorts and flip flops 🩴 with a small cheep weed whacker but this setup with the bigger weed whacker with the handlebars and harness will cut any land about as good or better than a lawnmower and if there are holes you won’t get those scalped holes when the mower wheels drop into a hole you just slice the grass flat and if the lawn gets over 15 degrees or steeper you can still cut the lawn I’ve moved some lawns in the town of Downieville California where the grass was growing at 80 degrees sure I hade to use ropes to hang onto the bank and work from the top down but it worked great looked great 👍 and you just can’t do some things with a lawnmower they only work on flat surfaces. I’ve thought about trying one of those new heads but for only being able to trim a little neater along walks I don’t see it worth the extra money being carful you can do just as good with string maybe not quite as fast but I don’t have that many feet of curbing to trim around and it’s defiantly not worth $400.
I’m looking to get one for around the pool.
Damn I love that rounded edge at your house!

Love the AC/DC-ish lawn domination music!
Did the same converstion. Love it. But you're right...still need string trimmer and I prefer to use my stick edger instead of the scissors. Just feel like I'm dulling the blade when I use it as an edger.
