The scissor head is used for thick and tall grass and light brush that a string trimmer would have a harder time cutting or in areas where you can’t have debris flying around. Like gravel pads, along roads, thick hillsides that are cut a couple times a year around ponds and rivers where you don’t want the grass in the water etc etc.

It’s actually not it’s made for the perfect cut slow and steady used a lot for golf courses because they have such fine cut Grass

Hi, guys! I want to thank you for a couple of suggestions that you have made. First, I purchased the blade sharpening tool you use and mentioned, and it is fantastic, I use the #40 disc with my handheld grinder and it works great. Second, I purchased a Darwin Grip for my Stihl FS110R weedeater and WOW does that make a difference on my back. I am 6'6", weigh 258 pounds, and am 77 years old and it has really, really, made a difference while weed-eating. Fantastic!!! Thank you again and keep up the good work! J.R.

I used the same type of scissors trimmer about 30 years ago when I worked at a golf course. It works great on the edges of the sand traps because it doesn't throw the sand around. It also gives you a clean, sharp edge. The only problem is that they wear out very fast. I had to replace them about every 2-3 weeks. We tried sharpening the edges, but that didn't last too long.

we had a rotary cutter for almost a year now, it's perfect tool for cutting close around cars and wooden fences since it does little knock up, so hardly any chance of damaging expensive cars but the job still requires us to cut around the grass edges that the cars are parked next to. It's not as fast as a tradtional string but you trade that for far more control of where the grass lands and risks of damage to other people's property.

the rotary scissors are mostly used on reel mowed turf because it makes a cleaner cut and allows you cut lower

I would like to try that on some tall stuff I do, but I think the regular very cheap brush cutter blades would do just as well.

This is very similar to a Red Max Reciprocator. I’ve owned one for about 8 years. Not really a replacement for a string trimmer but can be used for touch up when you don’t want grass clippings slung all over you. The video I saw had them using it to trim out the sod and edge sand traps. The Red Max works under water and was great for trimming around a pond. I would expect the Stihl version to be comparable. I replace the blades about every other year. Also works as a “power hoe” if the garden gets unruly.

I could have used that today when i was edging my yard. That is awsome you make it look easy to use to. I should have skipped this video because now I WANT ONE OF THESES!!! LOL

Only in USA to get these kinds of innivation!!!! To use it here in my farm, I believe, more 5 years later! I have Stihl over here and is the only one that stands. When I have the opportunity to go to USA, I like visit for example Home Depot and Best Buy - there is my little paradise!

We have used the rotary shear for near 2 years to cut cattails and tall grass from drainage ditches.

RedMax has one. I've had one for over 10 years. Wicked cool. They might also trim seaweed good🤔🤷🏻‍♂️? They are pretty popular at golf courses for "edging" sand traps. Also does work for for laying down tall grass quick. Even small scrub type trees

Down here in Florida that tool is made for working around ponds and under the water to cut the grass growing out of the water

I remember using this head back in early 2000's but we used them on golf course bunkers to get a nice edge. I'm sure you noticed they are an oscillating head and not a spinning head by now and there is not spin direction. They work awesome for edging and going around young tress so you don't scar the bark so in essence decrease the risk of you killing the tree. 👍👏 Good video to inform the uninformed though.

Honestly there’s nothing like good old trimmer line!!!!

Those rotary scissors make me drool...but theyre a bit out of my price range currently. I live in a rural area with a lot of overgrowth. I gave up trimmer line with my Stihl and got the plastic blades. I prefer the white ones over orange because I can see them while I'm running the machine. They last longer, they do a great job, and awesome for trimming and light edging, tackling overgrowth, and small trees. They don't throw everything everywhere, most of it just lays down after being cut. Its nice not banging the trimmer every minute to release more line, no tangling or melting, and no frustration with line spools. But they can't get in weird spots like trimmer line can. That's the only issue and its not a big one.

I need to get those blades 'cause I am so tired of messin' with trimmer line. I'm also in a fairly rural-type area and sometimes come up against heavier weeds and weed plants with a stalk and the trimmer can't handle those. I'm glad to read your positive opinion of the blades, it has made my mind up to get set up tomorrow. Thank you!

That new trimming head is used best like a reel mower it's for low sarp tight lawns the ordinary lawn won't accept it well but it it good on tidying up maintaining hedges

That trimmer attachment is called the rotary scissors and they're meant for turf cut very short because they can cut lower than line trimmers

I've been curious about these as well so I'm glad you made a video. Looks like it does a much better edge than a weed eater so that's a plus I just don't like how it doesn't clear the clippings when being used as a weed eater. Maybe its a plus when doing some weed abatement type jobs.

I would use it for really tall grass or brush.

A way you can maintain that commercial property and be nice cuz with the mini excavator and a brush head you can do the inside of them hills very easily

That thing seems like an EXPENSIVE solution to a nonexistent problem, and frankly comes across as gimmicky. That $400 would buy a LOT of trimmer line and edger blades. And HOW long before it has to be sharpened? Even the simple steel edger blades don't last long. It would tale a LOT of convincing for me to get one but if it works for you, Great! As you said It looks like it would excel at working around water. The type of blades look like they would not 'Splash'. Don't want to speculate on the performance with dead bunnies, though probably better than the string trimmer did. (You aint gonna live that one down quickly)

Where these tools come into their own, is if you are working close to properties or near cars or other items; where a strimmer with line can/will flick stones or debris. Causing stone strikes. Potentially causing damage & cost to the Company or operator. While most people won't care about that as a home owner, or contractor staff for example. As the business owner & the person who is footing the costs of tools, fuel & Wages; that is your insurances potentially going up and claims you don't want. As well as having to fix damage & reputation with your Clients. That problem does exist, this is a solution. (Especially in the UK where laws/regulations or insurances are hot on this issue.) Many people don't care because it isn't "Their problem". For those of us where it is our problem. We do care. So a fix is welcome. We run the Huskie version of this on a 535LK. (As well as their Edger for that specific task. When working by the side of Multi Million pound properties, or Historic buildings, or Clients cars and other valuables; where we need to clear down/strim or cut & edge. Strimmer line is an accident waiting to happen at close range, and with the bigger Backpack strimmer's we run, worse still. It's about risk reduction & risk management. They are not light though, so not something I would use for edging unless it was in tight quarters with property or vehicles etc. Running it from a strimming harness or something like an ET2 or Easylift harness; saves your back, shoulders and neck. The issue for me with trimmer line is the miles and miles of plastic string that I leave in nature for thousands of years. Stihl alone makes 240000 miles of line each year, enough to reach the moon. And all of that goes straight into the ground. I use string where I have to. Close to solid objects etc, but not on open areas.

After you break your first $800 window you will be running to get one of these...

Seems like it would be perfect for trimming over areas with rocks or obstacles where a traditional trimmer would throw rocks.

It would be good for small trees and brush

I have this attachment that I use with the KMA130 r Powerhead. The Stihl RG-KM Reciprocator Attachment is not like the rotary scissors. The blades are not spinning. they work more like a hedger trimmer and ocellate side to side. I use it if I am working around stones. You can dig it into them to cut the weeds without sending stones flying. If you have a wall or something you need to trim up to that you do not want to damage you can trim right up to it with that attachment with a lower risk of damage. I need to trim up to a painted plaster wall on one of my lawns. It will not damage the wall That same lawn has lawns to edge right next to gardens with lots of little stones in them. There is no garden edging. If I use the line trimmer I risk sending stones into windows I did a little test at home with some very old sun-damaged plastic planters. I used my line trimmer head and the line just nicked it. Plastic exploded all over the place. I used the RG-KM Reciprocator Attachment and I was able to push it right into the plastic planter and it only left a tiny little scuff mark. I do however find that the attachment is very heavy compared to the line trimmer attachment. The KMA 130 R is a light powerhead as the battery is attached to a harness and it's not in the power head. This can make it feel heavy at the attachment end when using the Reciprocator Attachment.

i get the idea of them prevent stones being fired through windows but expensive and cant help thinking how long before it wears out blunt blades needs sharpening and more maintenance on the blades

Walking home from work one day I seen a professional crew do a yard with something like that and I wondered what it was my dad can use something like that in his yard because he has weeds that my trimmer cannot handle if I was TQ I would have the car keys and the in case something went wrong nice to try it out at your own place before going to a customer's.

It would be good for trimming and leveling up bush tops etcetera

First thing I thought of is that the new thing is great for edging. Not the trimming, but the cutting of that edge when held vertical. The downside of it, I think, would be when you hit a rock or something, it will dull those blades really fast and then needs getting sharpened, where with the trimmer line you can just continue going without having that maintenance added to it. Brush cutting I wager it would do great at. It sure does look gnarly! hahaha

Wicked looking head on that Stihl. Great review watching it in action. Agree--not an optimal trimmer. If you want to sell it--I'll come and buy--cause I need a reason to see Schlaeibaugh

Looks like a learning curve with that one to keep from bouncing it off the grass and against a solid edge surface.

I remember when the string trimers came out and one of the selling points was it was safer to use.

the great thing about it not attached all the time to an engine for the few times you use it but feel expensive and hi maintenance dont think id use it for edging digging in soil with blades results in having to sharpen but defo another option for grass cutting and maybe storky stuff

How does it work touching up hedges?

I couldn't fit half of what I use on a daily basis doing fertilization and weed control in that van. Cool setup, I'm guessing they either refill it multiple times or just do much lower square footage per day.

I mow my lawn 2 times per week, it grows about an inch every day

The biggest advantage I can see is that when doing next to a gravel driveway, you won't be launching stones. Like she said, you don't get the grass stuck to your pants.. stones can be painful for you or anyone near you. I miss grass (phoenix AZ is not known for grass)

You guys remind me of My wife and I We own a Drain Cleaning company Now she is long since out of a service truck And runs the office now We we’re a good team and I am blessed to have the company at the point it is today But saying that I do miss the ole days when we had one van scrambling for work and doing what it takes to get it done Here is some advice Don’t grow to big to fast Or you guys will forget why you started in the first place

Always be sure to check that the nut is tightened before using it. It will work itself out.

Good Advice.

Does yours shake a it when you run it. I hit a flag the small yard ones and I got a small shake. Wanted to know if yours shakes a small bit.

Something like that might be cool to get in there where the HVAC people lost interest in their job , and left wire hanging in behind the A/C unit where you are always afraid to get crazy to avoid hitting a wire.....

That new attachment would be good to use at place where y'all took so long to clear out. Around those rocks and high places where the mower can't get too.

that does look like it would work best for clearing growth like hedges do. Hopefully price comes down with fixed income it took 4 months just to get the power head and basic trimmer attachment

He is like a new kid with a new toy trying to learn how to use it. After he uses it awhile getting the hang of it. This new tool will cut time done in trimming tall grass spots. Give us a future update on using it .

The famous Zenoah Reciprocator from 30 - 35 years ago, now by Stihl.

Just watched GCI Turf channel and he actually uses the EZ Go version of the one you tested.

I wouldn’t recommend it. I have the power scythe that operates similar. Got a thin piece of metal caught one time and it chipped off a tooth. Had to replace the whole blade assembly

I meant to watch this yesterday and I know I'm probably wrong on this due to the fact it's been so many years ago. I'm almost 100% sure Shindaiwa weed eaters spin the opposite direction of your Toro weed eater. This was in the 90s but when looking at the house from the street we'd start on the furthest right spot on the house property and then work to the right standing in the yard and flying around the house. I've always thought that looks so weird but over the years I've forgotten all about it.

Looks like it doesn’t mulch up the clippings as good as string. Looks mint for tall ornamental grass

Another good reason to get a Ventrac. Grind the stumps down and there's a boom mower which might help out when it comes time to cut all of that hard to reach grass. I'd like to see how the rotary scissors do on cutting real overgrowth compared to a brush cutter attachment for a trimmer. Any chance you might consider getting a small chipper shredder like the one at Harbor Freight?

Yes Robert….Ventrac at $25,000 plus $15,000 for the boom mower. Oh yeah, and if you want a finish deck add another $5,000. BTW….I’ve owned Ventrac and Steiners. That Stihl Kombi goes about $400 plus $400 for the rotary head.

Are the stand behinds as hard on your back and knees as a walk behind with suki? Ive used a snapper pro 61" walk behind on our campground and fishing lakes for about 10 years and its getting harder and harder on my body every year. Would love to get a ventracts but $27k is alot to spend on a mower.
