BIG tip, if you're going to use a container for a living space, ALWAYS use a one trip container. It won't be dented or have bowed walls, and who knows what kind of cargo it carried, could've been a hazardous material that leaked into the flooring. Going with a high cube gives you more storage space up high.

Even if you use it for shop space at least get a "cargo ready" container because "WWT" typical junk containers are sold only because they are unfit for maritime service. That is a very important consideration. The difference is well worth the price. I own both types and will buy "one trip" grade in future. Container structures are to get the very specific benefits of a container (robust, weathertight construction rated for typhoons at sea which provides gasketed storage). There are much cheaper ways to get living space like mobile homes; Containers are terrific for gearheads and metalworkers (like Andrew Camaratta) but typical helpless people should study long and hard to become their own subject matter experts before choosing a solution. If in doubt, make a 40' High Cube workshop first! That will teach far more than videos....

@@Comm0ut Very true. I made a workshop, and I learned a lot from it. I'd only use one for habitation if I needed something that I could easily secure from theft.

Good information with a small correction: high cube containers are 9'6" in height, standard containers are 8'6" with the difference in height being exactly 1 foot rather than the foot and a half you mentioned.

DAMN! I just paid $4,850 for a used high cube in NC. Was like $5,300 delivered. It's in great shape on the inside, but outside could use a coat of paint little bit of rust. No major dents or dings.

They are extremely expensive and you would have to retrofit mechanical and electrical systems into it, making it more expensive.

@@wakeupamericaandresist2413 I'm doing that, as for the wrong type of insulation response, thats hogwash. Mine has stainless interior, exterior and raised t channel floor. Electrical will run in the the floor or up walls and ceiling inside ridgid conduit. I get 92 inches interior, wall to wall. Insulation is about 3.5 closed cell. I'm disabled so its taking me a really long time, so far though the temp has remained comfortable even on hottest days this year.

I think you missed one detail -if you want large vertical cutouts of a wall in your design, you could have structural issues with the standard container that are no problem for the high cube. The high end designs with big floor to ceiling glass are easier with high cube.

Excellent point. One of the reasons I went with HCs in my build is that it allows me to retain part of the wall at the ceiling while still providing a 8' ceiling height. Simply adding a lentle with angle iron will regain much of the verticle load bearing capacity, vs needing massive LVLs or trussing above the cutout.

@@ModernMountainLiving Smarter thing to do is use a HC and limit your ceiling height to 8' and retain/reinforce the remaining wall web at the ceiling. The extra height will provide room for vent ducts and insulation allowing you to put a deck over the container roof.

@@MotivatedMetalworks The Deck over existing roof is the Best Idea for the Container House argument. Not One person on my channel has considered it. Heat deflection with ventilation. But it still required building a structure over an existing structure which is redundant for material costs.

@@ModernMountainLiving I built one on my 20'er that used to house my tractor for the last 4 years. Material cost was minimal as I used green treated lumber. Maybe $250 with deck screws all-in for an 8x12 deck. I have a deer blind up there, and the critters all ignore it.

Could you put the container a foot into the ground to run cables and plumbing underneath your feet rather than doing it above your head?

Even in an arid environment(desert) you want to build above grade for runoff and most building districts mandate some sort of foundation. If you used just HUD pads you will still need access and a conditioned space, slab on grade either perfectly preset your drain lines, conduit or remove existing wood floors and run there. Best case would be a footing then stem wall foundation(CMU"blocks", ICFs, Poured Concrete. You could have access, freeze prevention, and adequate drop for "p"traps and drain lines. Remember to build it airtight to not lose the asset of a container.

I have a question why I'm on a budget I am trying to build my home but I need 40 foot shipping containers I need 10 of them my question is where can I find the cheapest ones online

2 high cube and 2 standard is what I want.

Do you think it would be possible to cut the roof off a container and extend the roof ?🧐 I’ve seen a company do it and I got a couple standard containers in my back yard so would be nice to get a professionals opinion.

Hey! yes it is possible, a lot of work though, so if your willing to take on a big project anything is possible. The steel is obviously very heavy and cutting those panels out will have to be done in small sections, but if your comfortable with that type of work, you sure can!

@@bmadgett85 If you cut the roof completely out, the sides will most likely bow in or out if there's nothing keeping them plumb. The side walls and especially the roof steel aren't very strong laterally (or vertically in the case of the roof). It's easy to flex the roof steel, but what it does structurally for the container is lock the walls into their strongest orientation. You might think the tubular steel welded in the upper corners is what gives the walls their strength, but it's really the roof panel acting like a web holding everything rigid. In order to replace the structure lost by cutting out that web, you'd need to add some kind of lateral trussing or some other structure to retain the wall's vertical alignment. Cutting the roof out will be the easiest part.

Two questions for your answer: Do you want the final product that looks like a really tall Container? If so Welding the two back together will be a nightmare, but it can be done. Envision seamlessly splicing two(2) wet pieces of pasta together while they are standing straight up and down. Welding a butt joint with thin metal is very tough not to burn thru. Best is weld flat bar behind one then bring in the other. I see major safety concerns if you plan to weld under a top part of container that is dangling from a crane. Super expensive, Dangerous, incredible amount of time by a very experienced welder. End result will most likely not be very successful. Is it possible? Yes(maybe). 2. Is it the look of a container, the 8' width you like or is it that you want to utilize what you have(Cool), but will dispose of the left over top and bottom(not Cool). Rather than destroy two good containers you may already have, raise a roof that spans between the two for your additional headroom. Or, You can sell what you have and replicate the "look" by building what you want then use vertical metal siding. K.eep I.t S.imple S.illy.

Are these costs for a 20 or 40 ft?

Aren't standard container 8.5 ft high, so 1 foot taller then high cube?

Not sure what unexpected costs I might come across, where to reinforce, best flooring for it etc. Working personally with 3x40' high Cube for the main base part of the house stacked 3 tall

How are you integrating the 3 levels of containers? The container load capacity ratings are based on weight only bearing on the corners and internally on the floors. When you look at "racking load capacity" they're only rated for around 12klbs, and that requires one of the doors to be closed (and latched 4 places). While that 12klbs might sound impressive, my 40'HCs are all over 8500# empty. That means if your doors are open, and you have 2 containers even stacked pad-to-pad, you might end up with your bottom container tweaked out of square and you won't be able to close the doors.

3 shipping containers tall? Do you have to comply with Zoning or Land use Height restrictions? Wind loads? Where I am building our wind load is 132mph. Significant structural requirements are needed to keep from toppling. Have you checked what your set backs are? If you take nothing else away, please cutout ALL plumbing penetrations exact measurements (up/down) prior to stacking. Have you not seen "The Ugly Truth" video?

I was going to sit down with a structural engineer, as I have no knowledge of anything of the sort.. My thought was just to weld all containers together and basically use it as a structural form, is this really that much of an issue? Please let me know, I thought it would hold. Structure is 3x2 20' 3x3 40' and again 3x2 20' all pushed together welded to one another and put on footings foundation with steel to weld it to. I thought this would support enough

@@sixsixseven2896 Are you making a "+" or "z" shape with the 20'er's on the sides? Maybe a "u"? If you have some kind of lateral structure to keep it from blowing over or leaning/twisting, you'll be fine with appropriate footings.
