The Mr.Dawson is inspired by the real life Charles Lightoller, which did the exact time thing as he did in the movie, his boat, the Sundower is preserved today in a museum near the english channel. Charles Lightoller was also the most senior officer to survive the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. What a legend.

Lulz. The main reason is that the German troops stopped their advance and they had the time to evacuate. It is hotly debated why they stopped, but it definitely was a mistake.

They thought the evacuation wasn't possible so that they had time to secure other objectives to consolidate their holdings. There were also political motivations as some generals did want to attack them but others with closer ties to the Nazi party felt it wasn't suitable for armored vehicles so they left it up to the airforce.

Hey there

The was a chance to make this film into a blockbuster , but the clinical beach scenes and lack of equipment/turds/bodies/dirty worn uniforms and chaos strewn about Dunkirk, was on it's own enough to kind of spoil it. It's attention to general details missing and lack of employing a few hundred extra's they should have invested more money in.
