40:1 - The Battle of Wizna - Sabaton History 001 [Official]

Sabaton wrote a song about the Battle of Wizna, called 40:1. When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, they met determined and fierce resistance. Multiple battles show the steadiness of the Polish defenders, in contrast to the common narrative about the Polish defence. One of these Battles is the Battle of Wizna, where a Polish defensive force managed to hold off a much larger German army for several days.

    I can't wait to see Indy explain how the Winged Hussars were a tiny proportion of the cavalry charge described in the song, and that most of the fighting was done by Imperial and Polish infantry. By the time the Polish Cavalry, including the Hussars, arrived to the battlefield, the Ottomans were already retreating under sustained fire, suffering massive casualties and wavering, on the verge of routing. The charge didn't turn the tide as much as deliver the coup de grâce. It never ceases to amaze me how the German and Austrian forces, who made up almost two-thirds of the army that beat the Ottomans and did most of the fighting, has been completely forgotten in the popular mind. Even the Polish Infantry, who thought like fucking lions for twelve hours straight against the Ottomans, have been erased from memory.

  • @davyprayoga4276

    @davyprayoga4276

    5 жыл бұрын

    Jen'ari-asha well they weren't on the verge on routing. They were regrouping and preparing for an all out attack WHEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE. And even then the Ottomans still held a numerical advantage. But I do agree that we shouldn't forget about the Austrians and Germans who also fought in the battle.

  • @Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    @Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@davyprayoga4276 Imperial forces had captured two key targets a full three hours before the charge, the villages of Oberdöbling and Unterdöbling. A combined assault from the three powers had taken the main Turkish fortification, the Türkenschanze. The Grand Vizier himself had been forced to abandon his position and retreat to his original headquarter in the camp since the Ottoman troops were getting pushed back so quickly that he would soon be in danger himself. A full two hours before the charge, Ottoman units were beginning to rout from the battlefield. Make no mistake - The Ottomans were losing the battle, and they were losing it with exponential speed as their frontline was being pushed back. They were exhausted, demoralised, and on the back foot. The cavalry charge didn't *turn* the battle, it *finished* it

  • @davyprayoga4276

    @davyprayoga4276

    5 жыл бұрын

    Jen'ari-asha whether or not the winged hussars were there didn't change the outcome of the battle. Sure the Ottomans were losing but they weren't defeated. The winged hussars actually saved the lives of countless imperial and polish infantry. If the Ottomans were able to make an all out attack on the infantry they would still lose but the death toll would be a lot higher. So the winged hussars didn't really "end" the battle nor really "turn the tides" but merely accelerated the battle.

    The Poles never gave up. Even while occupied, they secretly designed and mass-produced a sub machinegun. I remember reading that Polish lancers actually did make a few cavalry charges against the Germans, but only when it was appropriate (never against tanks - that one didn't happen) and usually very successfully. Some Polish pilots in France were given an obsolete plane (to be fair, the French also operated that design) that during the battle for that country, French command ordered those fighters grounded because they were so out-matched by German planes. The Poles flew them anyway, and still managed to knock German planes down. Do not tell a Pole he can't kill his enemy. He'll find a way.

    The poles were definitely one of the fiercest fighting forces of the second world war, even if they were outnumbered, outgunned, and didn't even have the proper supplies to defend against an invasion. Yet they stood, they chose to fight to the end and held the wehrmacht for 3 days. It's truly ashame that such a country was tainted by the lies that we bestowed upon them, as an american every polish citizen has my deepest respect. Especially to those who serve(d), I'm am glad you were on our side

    One other thing to note about the Polish defense against the Third Reich: It did not end when Poland fell. Hundreds of pilots went with that retreat to Bucharest, and they eventually found their way around to France and Britain. 145 Polish pilots served in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and by the end of the war, 19400 airmen served in the Polish Air Force operating out of Britain alongside the RAF. That's a substantial chunk of the total British air power. And then the war ended and everyone got sent back home to the other side of the Iron Curtain. That's the bad part of the story.

The hypocrisy of poles and their sympathizers is ridiculously stupid.

    @pacthug4life

    @@s4le First of all, Poland gained its independence from Germany not Soviet Russia. Central-Easter Europe was under German control according to the Treaty of Brest. Soviet Russia could not give Poland independence, because it had no control over the entities that constituted reborn Poland: The temporary Kingdom of Poland, Republic of Lublin and Duchy of Cieszyn. Second, Polish-Soviet War started with Russian attack on Vilnius (04.01.1919), it was Lenin who stated that "The road for the revolution to reach the west leads over the dead body of Poland", "We must direct all our attention to preparing and strengthening the Western Front. A new slogan must be announced: 'Prepare for war against Poland". When it comes to Polish eastern border, it is much more complicated than that, Symon Petlura gave Western Ukraine or Galicia to Poland in exchange for help against Soviet Russia (the Kiev offensive).After Ukrainians gained back Kiev, they failed to construct any state or army structures that would help prevent Russia from taking Kiev back, they put little over 24 000 troops, while Poland in 1920 put almost 750 000. Most of major cities in eastern Poland, like Lviv, Grodno, Vilnius were in majority Polish, while the countryside was mostly Ukrainian and Belorussian, that created a situation where creating a ethnic borders was basically impossible, one village was Polish, next one was Ukrainian. To avoid instability, Poland resigned from taking any major cities without significant Polish population like Minsk. Third, Yes, Soviet Russia did stab Poland in the back, because it attacked Poland without a declaration of war, breaking non aggression pact, Treaty of Riga and many other international treaties. I would call Russian historical revisionism "hypocrisy" PS. Why do all Russians who I meet on the internet are insulting everyone they disagree with. Cant You guys have a normal conversation?

    Just think about it. Left all alone, with two powerful military forces attacking from two sides, poor Poland, having only recently regained independence, had to stand at arms again. They fought bravely, until they couldn't fight anymore. One of the soldiers who fought in defence of Poland in September 1939 was lieutenant Franciszek Wacławik, my great great grandfather. Along with many other Polish soldiers, he managed to evacuate to France. He enlisted in the Polish Armed Forces in The West. He fought in the French Campaign and after France fell, he returned in 1944, taking part in Operation Overlord. He was promoted a few times during the war, making it all the way to colonel. The war was won, but my great grand father couldn't return to Poland. The newly installed communist regime considered the soldiers who fought in the name of the fatherland to be "traitors, western spies and enemies of the people". Along with many of his brothers in arms, he couldn't go back home, under the threat of imprisonment or even death. After Stalin's death, Poland declared amnesty for the soldiers who fought in the west and he finally returned. He spent the rest of his life hoping for his country to regain freedom, but passed away too soon to see Poland liberate itself from the communist rule. He was laid to rest in a suit, but his belt had a really peculiar buckle. It came from his field uniform and bore the words "Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna", meaning "God, Honour Fatherland". Rest in peace, Colonel. We will never forget our brave soldiers, our ancestors.

Commander in Chief salutes brave deffenders!" After most of ammunition was spent and no meds lesf, commanders: Mjr Sucharski - overal commander (during battle struk by illnes and unable to command for some of the time) and Cpt Dąbrowski - designer of the deffences and battle commander (took over command when needed) decided to surrender. When Mjr Sucharski negotiated capitulation, Ctp Dąbrowski orginized what left of the troops and led them to the meet the germans. It is said, that among those soldiers have been some of the best in the whole riffleman, machinegunners, enginners, mortarers and granade trowers in the whole polish army, some of them prized highest scores in military competitions. Yes, this is another battle, where facts mixes with legends and sometimes facts are unbelivebla. Like mortar barrage accurate since first salvo with no actual training on Westerplatte, or a soldier digginng up gun ports of a bunker, covered by sand from bombs and battleship fire, during infantry attack, or soldiers holding ruins of a bunker while lying next to corpses of their comrades smashed by rubble.

    Heavy Metal and History!!! That’s why I LOVE Sabaton!!! Also: The polish call this their version of Thermopylae? I’m now envisioning the Polish Captain all like: Captain Reginas: Madness? THIS! IS! POLAND!!! (Pulls Grenade)

    Oh my god, I had no idea it was the allies that created that false narrative. Always assumed it was German propaganda. Thank to people like Indy and Sabaton for educating about how heroic the Polish really were!!

    This was actually one of the few Sabaton songs i didnt know the story behind. Its a brilliant story really does justice to the bravery of the polish army. Also the uniforms and set is sooo cool Astrid did a great job with it.

    Congratulations! This was so good and this channel will be one of my favorites, of course (metal music + history is the perfect combination!). As a brazilian, I can't wait for the "Smoking Snakes" video! 40:1 is one of the best songs from Sabaton, and the whole history of Poland is so great! Greetings from Brazil!

    Even just a few years ago, my college textbook told the odious “polish cavalry charging tanks” lie. I was pretty dang furious about it.
