The Attack of the Dead Men - Gas Warfare on the Eastern Front - Sabaton History 051 [Official]

This episode is about the "Attack of the Dead Men". During the third battle for Osowiec Fortress in July 1915 during the Great War, German artillery was bombarding the defending Russian soldiers with a new deadly weapon: Poison Gas. The fatal mixture of chlorine and bromine descended like a green fog over the Russian trenches. Without adequate gas-masks to protect themselves, the defenders were believed to all have died in agony. However, as the German infantry advanced, they did not only march right into a Russian counterattack but also encountered the dead, seemingly rising from their graves.

What did I think? I thought it was strangely legendary, and quite legendarily strange . . . Kidding aside, I'm not exactly a serious student of history, more of an enthusiast, but I still wouldn't have heard about any of this without Indy and Sabaton (or is it Sabaton and Indy?) This is horrifyingly beautiful stuff guys.

As someone who's accidentally gassed themselves (in the lab) with HCl and SO3 gas before i can say its super unpleasant. It was very dilute (most of the gas went up the fumehood) but still sucked, burnt all the way down my throat and lungs, stupidly painful for hours had to just sit in fresh air for ages nothing can be done for this type of injury really, it was only a mild exposure. Can't imagine a deliberate high conc. gas attack must have been sheer agony for the forces being gassed.

Yeah, almost any chlorine-based compound is extremely unpleasant if inhaled/exposed to. Had my experience with it, when I was working in hydrochem. Had to dive into the lab, flooded with the tear agent (namely Cl3CNO2, aka chlorpicrin) during the accident, to drag out the guy, who accidentally synthesized it. And then one more time - to knock out the window, because ventilation was on fritz. Spent the next few hours with my face in the sink.

I was making ITO (indium tin oxide) using stannic chloride (historically used as a chemical weapon used to deliver chlorine and HCl gas) and it reacted very violently, couldn't get the fume hood down fast enough and got a good lung full of gas, the HCl then reacted with a sulfate compound in the fumehood releasing the SO3. Learned my lesson keep stuff further in the fumehood and make sure its extracting at maximum when dealing with something tbat spews those gases

I love this song but not in a usual way, I love it because it reminds me of how strong humans can be, every time I listen to a Sabaton song i'm reminded of the horrible tragedies people have went through and it makes my life seem that much easier. It's insane that people can have the will to fight after a chemical attack like that. Soldiers are brave and I need to be as strong as they are while facing the small challenges in my daily life because what i'm faced with is nothing compared to what they went through. If even dead men can fight I sure as hell can fight too.

Just a small correction on the gas part: Chlorine gas is subjected to a redox reaction in the presence of water. I watched Bismarck 1 day after it came out absolutely loved it. I knew some of the song titles and knew it’s about or have and idea what’s it’s about, and I have started to watch Sabaton history vids about the songs. Love it.

Every single time, I have GOT to appreciate the fact that you explain the backgrounds behind so many songs and educating us in history! If I am ever able to become a history teacher, THIS is how I will add some fun to the lessons.

I want you all to appreciate the audio edit of this episode in particular: the music fits amazingly, doesn't feel looped, the re-start when Indy said "or was it?", the audio effects, everything felt amazing!

Definitely find both versions of this song a flat out bop, even though my neighbors would ask why I was blasting Russian songs on my speakers XD Worth every beat though

Of all the songs Sabaton have released, this was the episode I was most looking forward to, for several reasons. First and foremost, it's by far the most epic song on the Great War album. Second, I have looked for information about this event, and I've come up pretty much empty handed every time. So, thank you very much to the whole crew!

Finally, I have been waiting for this one since July when the Russian version came out. I wonder what the story will be. This is going to be one good episode. I knew that Radio Tapok would come into this. And the story is good. About the Christmas Truce, I do hope we get one day.
