I feel awful for Derrick’s mother. I can’t imagine the guilt she has felt for almost 30 years. I was a teenager around that time. It was more common to let kids play in the neighborhood. Four seems young but my mom let me walk alone to kindergarten at 5. Thank God I survived.

I was about to ask about this. I was younger than Derrick Robie when this happened, and don't remember many parents letting their kids run around unsupervised at 4 years old. But then again, I do remember running around unsupervised at 6 or 7 years old. Crazy how times have changed.

I know it seems unbelievable but in that small town in 1993, everyone knew everyone & nothing like that had ever happened. I remember people talking about how mature he acted for his age & I believe he was taller than most his age. I know the coaches all talked about him being a “natural” at sports & so well liked by the kids & adults alike. (He was everything Eric wasn’t or could ever be.) He had begged his Mom to let him walk to the ball park by himself, like most of his friends were doing. I think maybe his younger sibling was sick that morning, but I can’t swear to that…but I believe that seemed to have been a part of her decision. You can bet that poor woman goes through hell every day blaming herself 🥹. I’m the oldest of two, both born in the ‘70’s and in a small town. Just remembering things we were allowed to do at ages 6 & 3 makes my stomach drop all these years later! And I guess it caused me to keep a closer eye on mine.

I was stuck working the pediatric kids unit when I did psych and we had a lot of kids who killed animals and said things that pointed toward criminal behavior. They were like 7 years old. Some of them wanted to kill their parents or had been caught with knives in their siblings rooms. And it was a small unit. We had around 6 kids at a time.

One was given early release over several months ago, because doctors said he wasn't a threat, and he just killed another woman, again. The killer (Eric the Red) knew how to play victim to say to get himself released. My heart goes out to his parents so much on this. Being close to the same age as him, I grew up in a nice community just like he did. Parents always let their kids out in the neighborhood, so this could have happened to anyone. I really hope his parents have found some peace and I truly hope they don’t blame themselves. May that precious angel Rest In Peace and I hope that Eric has turned things around and that he has found constructive ways of dealing with his anger. Thank you Harmin, for covering this story so well as usual.

My little brother at 3 years old wandered out of our yard and crossed actual railroad tracks that landed him at a nearby Jack in the Box! They fed him fries and called my Dad. Back in the 70’s it seemed safer but it wasn’t that far off from this crime if you think about it. I have an 8 year old granddaughter and I’m terrified everyday with the country we are living in.

Another great video Thanks for always putting in your very best Yes I’m sure the mom will always regret letting her son go by himself. I was over the top and still am with my twins and they are nearly 18 But I think it’s better to be over protective. May God continue helping the family. I agree with you that the monster should still be in jail

Well done Harmon, with grace and class. It’s nice to see so many memorials for little Derrick Robie. 4 yrs old is too young to let a child go anywhere by themselves. Sadly it makes them a target for the crazies that lurk around. Rest In Peace sweetie! 🙏

Very sad! With the crime rate the way it is, doesn’t matter how old you are, you need to buddy up with someone and not head off alone. At four years old, Robbie was still a baby. Robbie was way to young to not have adult supervision. Shame on the parents, but It’s 100% Eric’s fault.
