Derick's mom will regret that decision to let Derick walk alone that awful day forever. 💔
I feel awful for Derrick’s mother. I can’t imagine the guilt she has felt for almost 30 years. I was a teenager around that time. It was more common to let kids play in the neighborhood. Four seems young but my mom let me walk alone to kindergarten at 5. Thank God I survived.

I was about to ask about this. I was younger than Derrick Robie when this happened, and don't remember many parents letting their kids run around unsupervised at 4 years old. But then again, I do remember running around unsupervised at 6 or 7 years old. Crazy how times have changed.

My son was born in 1991. Sorry but no, it was not common at all to let a 4 year old walk alone to a park then. We had many predator's then as now, maybe even more so for it was easier for them then. No one let there kindergarten child walk alone either.

I'm pretty sure my parents werent taking unnecessary risks, but i was still allowed to run around and play wherever with the other neighborhood kids. we just had to get our asses home if there were gunshots or when the street lights came on
I was picked on and bullied as a kid but it didn't make me mad at the world or want to kill anyone, let alone a kid younger and smaller than me. This is sad.
There is no way I would of let my 4 year old go to the park on their own. Don't care if it was next door. You don't know what kind of people are lurking about. Thanks for sharing. RIP little man and Merry Christmas Harmon 🙂👍💖

I know it seems unbelievable but in that small town in 1993, everyone knew everyone & nothing like that had ever happened. I remember people talking about how mature he acted for his age & I believe he was taller than most his age. I know the coaches all talked about him being a “natural” at sports & so well liked by the kids & adults alike. (He was everything Eric wasn’t or could ever be.) He had begged his Mom to let him walk to the ball park by himself, like most of his friends were doing. I think maybe his younger sibling was sick that morning, but I can’t swear to that…but I believe that seemed to have been a part of her decision. You can bet that poor woman goes through hell every day blaming herself 🥹. I’m the oldest of two, both born in the ‘70’s and in a small town. Just remembering things we were allowed to do at ages 6 & 3 makes my stomach drop all these years later! And I guess it caused me to keep a closer eye on mine.

You’d be surprised how many evil kids exist. I was stuck working the pediatric kids unit when I did psych and we had a lot of kids who killed animals and said things that pointed toward criminal behavior. They were like 7 years old. Some of them wanted to kill their parents or had been caught with knives in their siblings rooms. And it was a small unit. We had around 6 kids at a time.

I would never let my 4 year old walk anywhere alone. I do not understand how his mother could think that was ok. At 4 years old he was still a baby and should never of been allowed to be by himself. My daughters are 35 and 30 and it is still not safe for them to walk the streets alone. Children and adults are kidnapped every day. There are awful people out there in the world. This case broke my heart all those years ago and still breaks my heart. The horror that poor baby must of went through for the last few minutes of his life. It just breaks your heart. I can not believe they let that monster that murdered him out of prison. No matter how much he has changed it doesn't change the fact that he brutally murdered this poor innocent baby. It is not fair that he gets to walk free but this little guy can never get his life back. Just makes me sick. Thank you for doing this video Harmon. RIP to this little guy. Merry Christmas Harmon.

You have to be a sadistic POS to torture and murder a 4-year-old baby. I would not let a 4-year-old out in the yard by himself much less walk anywhere alone!
This story is sad all around. Thank u for showing this.
I remember a part of the trial where a veteran detective broke down on the stand describing what happened to that little boy, Derek. Psychopath should have never been let out. One was given early release over several months ago, because doctors said he wasn't a threat, and he just killed another woman, again. The killer (Eric the Red) knew how to play victim to say to get himself released. These inmates have nothing but time on their hands to get into the law library, and come up with some lies and victimhood to get themselves out.
4 years old and Mommy let him go to the park by himself?? Wow! I wouldn't let my 4 year old go to the end of the driveway without me being with them.
