in the beginning they mentioned she was having an affair with tom, i think grandma, in her own way, was trying to protect her daughters reputation. i'm not saying that makes it ok, i'm just trying to think of why else grandma would be so against the fight for truth.

Her murderer got to live a long life, never being charged. Something about that is just so infuriating.

The weird thing though is that despite telling her to forget about it, the grandmother kept a crime journal on everything she said about the crime, and kept the photo evidence. Why would the grandmother do that? Very confusing.

We had been together for seven years almost to the day, but he had not married me. His family was wealthy, and that made everything more complicated. I wasn't after their money, but I was in love with their son. I was 31at the time, and had let him know that if he didn't have any plans of keeping me, I was ready to move on with my life. I was. I loved him, but I'm no doormat. His family blamed me for his death, even though he was 6 miles away and 8 or 9 police officers witnessed him shoot himself. I called the police that morning, hoping to save somebody. He was angry with his father and had spoken of killing him, but was in therapy for his mental health. I knew something bad was about to happen, but I didn't know what. Up until the moment they told me he had taken his last breath, I did not expect it to end with him dead. His family was so angry with me that they sent me to the wrong church for his funeral. The one time I let our daughter stay with them, still only 4 years old, they tried to turn her against me. We had to move back to my home state of Indiana from California. After that I told them they could come see her where we live, but I would not be sending her to them alone after the damage they did the last time I gave them the benefit of the doubt. It wasn't about me at all, it was about my daughter. When she was 14, my dad took her to see them once. Again, they filled her head full of trash about me. These people had never checked to see if we were alright, they never did anything for her, and I never once asked them for a dime, even when we were struggling. My daughter has never been the same since that trip. She started showing symptoms of bipolar 1, just like her dad. She'll be 25 this month, is pregnant with her second child, and thank God for her husband. His mother lives with them and she has a phD in psychology. She has been in an out of inpatient psychiatric wards ever since, and she struggles with it daily. I don't blame them for her condition, despite that they may have triggered it. Her daddy was the second of three sons to die by their own hand, out of seven total children fathered by his dad, and they can't blame them all on me. I guess it's true what they say about grieving: you either get better or you get bitter. I chose better, they chose bitter. I wish them the best, sincerely. This case really touched my heart, bc Heidi was the same age as my daughter was when she lost her dad. It is so confusing to a child and it can cause a lifetime of emotional problems. It makes me happy to see her do well and find peace. I hope someday my daughter can find the same. Cheers!

Just because the grandma told Heidi to let go doesn't mean she did. She probably wanted her granddaughter to be happy and lead a normal life. Plus they dealt with things differently back then. Luckily things have gotten better at knowing how to handle trauma

I can't believe after all those years she still stood by her mom just to get justice! She didn't give up, it's incredible.

This is so sad. It's amazing youre bringing awareness to these horrible crimes, that girl did a great job of dealing with her emotions and outsmarting her mom's killer. I hope she has found closure and recovered from her grief. May her mother rest in peace.

I lost my mom 3 months after this happened. The grief never ends, and there is no such thing as closure. There are longer time periods where you don't think about your loss as time goes on. But it never leaves you. Not ever. Her mom died on my 7th birthday. 😢

Heidi's mother was so incredibly brave in order to ensure Heidi's survival, and Heidi did her mother proud in never letting go. Like mother, like daughter.

This goes to show you what a mother's love can do. It is so powerful,that she protected her baby girl form imminent threat. Truly tragic and sad. May she rest in peace. Thank goodness this monster is behind bars.🙏💔

I don't usually cry over things, I watch and read a lot of true crime stuff.. this one had me teary eyed. That poor mom knew what was coming and did what she could to protect her kid and get justice. That takes guts and strength. Glad to hear justice has finally happened

There's no reason to believe that the grandmother didn't tell the police, since he was arrested at the time'. He was released because of a lack of evidence. The vague testimony of a 4 yo was probably deemed insufficient to go to trial. And I'm not sure what the police missed back then, either. At least one person remembered about the name written in blood, so it must have been known at the time, for instance.And the 10 yo recognized him, but there was no evidence that the man who tried to abduct her was the same who committed the murder three blocks away.

So glad they finally got him!!!! Mom is the best for going to any length to protect her daughter, even not yelling out when being assaulted. So happy for you, Heidi! And what an amazing cop that helped her solve it!

That certainly was ultimate proof what Mothers will do to protect their child . The thought of her being stabbed 17 times in the back and more , and to not make a sound for Heidi's safety is like unbelievable . My Mom died when I was eleven and like Heidi's family none of the adults wanted to talk about her. It was like she just disappeared one day. Kids need someone to talk about the death of a close family member to. They need to be comforted and encouraged to remember good things about the deceased. Happy memories they had together, otherwise it takes a very long time to get over the death. I could not talk about my mother without crying until I was grown.

the grandmother really played a big role in delaying the case. she indirectly played a role in protecting the murderer. this could've been solved literally years ago. absolutely devastating that heidi had to live years without justice.

I think it would be harsh to say that; we don't know how the original case proceedings went. If she wrote down everything Heidi said-- who's to say she didn't bring it up as a secondhand witness? She must have, given that it was her daughter, and that she was so scrupulous in making sure that everything was documented. There simply wasn't enough to circumstantial evidence to go on in 1970, and that's why the murderer went unsentenced. It might have been rather difficult for the judge to try someone on the word of a four-year-old alone, looking through a keyhole no less. Afterall, it has to be 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.

@imnotreal6275 the grandma is wrong for forcing her opinions on young Heidi, yes, but we are all fallible human beings. A person's response to pain can differ: the grandmother tried to avoid it but clearly never moved on from it as it was too painful to mention both the loss and the failure to exact justice for her daughter, while Heidi sought to overcome it, no matter how long it took. There could be other considerations too, such as financial reasons for not pursuing the case, societal standards for women back when, old age, etc.

The pain of being forced to forget is something I hate Heidi felt. Mourning and grief are slippery, neverending slopes. Talking about your deceased loved one hurts, especially if they died unnaturally. But, coming from someone who was forced to forget; Don't stop talking about them. Even if it hurts, and you do more crying than talking. Even if you get angry, and if you can't remember much. Don't stop talking. Because while you still remember, young kids like Heidi genuinely forget. Young kids like I was genuinely forget, and we can't get those memories back.

It’s so sad that the grandparents were probably so ashamed of Loretta for being an unwed mother back then. I believe they didn’t want that to be publicized for their reputation.

I can't imagine what she went through seeing her mom like that and how it effected her. I watched my aunt pass away when I was 14 and my mother in-law passed on mine and my husband anniversary 5 years ago it takes a toll on your mental health

This is by far the best true crime channel on the site. It doesn’t glorify the killer in any way like a majority of other channels do. It gives great accounts of the survivors and gets you to empathize with them.

He lived till 70 years old, mom got killed at age 23 , daughter lost her mom at age 4, her whole entire life was ruined, he at 70 lived a full life got caught had not much to loose so it was not justice

What a 4 yo had seen was presumably not considered reliable enough to go to trial (assuming even that she was still remembering it and could testify, as the grandmother saying "my granddaughter said after the murder that it was Tom" would have been an hearsay). I guess that you think that she "didn't want justice" because she tried to discourage her granddaughter to focus too much on the crime? I assume that she thought that her granddaughter needed to move on, which doesn't strike me as necessarily bad advice. Doesn't mean that she didn't want justice for her daughter.

The fact she stayed quiet is so sad but really makes her a legendary hero and she write his name YES MAMA👏🏾. Thank God the daughters never gave up, it's crazy no evidence and some how from peoples dedication it came together. Rip.

I’m just a kid but I’m so proud of Heidi . Everyone wanted her to give up but she didn’t. To me it looks like the police didn’t even try to solve the case . The evidence was right in their faces.

If he attacked another little girl , he was after Heidi. Her mother saved her life. Her mother must be so proud of the woman she's become .

How does all evidence from a cold case just disappear?! That sounds shady as hell. I get sometimes things can get lost to the years (which is still unacceptable) but every single piece the police had is absolutely mind boggling

Heidi seems like such a sweet woman. My heart breaks for her. Justice came very late in this case, but it's a relief that it has finally been solved. It's so painful to think of the fact that she wasn't allowed to talk about her mother, and that her grandmother hid away her diary that contained important details.

Wow the amazing incompetence of the initial investigation, if they find a murder victim was trying to write something in their own blood and the “cops “just ignored that!!!!!

That neighbor recording Tom admit what he did is heroic, she’s the real MVP of this story.

I think it’s important for adults to encourage children to talk about the person they lost. Whether they have lost a family member through trauma, violence or just natural circumstances, staying quiet it the worse thing you can do. Talking about it helps the mind heal & keeps their loved ones memory alive & active their minds. Watching videos is another good way for kids to remember a parent, grandparent or sibling. It helps them remember how they looked or what they sounded like. When they are older as an adult, they will have vivid memories of their time together & will remember detail of things they did together.

Congratulations to that Police Officer for helping Heidi to get him locked up! ❤️

I feel so bad for this woman having to bury her mother twice just to try and get justice for her slain mother and her family was horrible for telling her to let her mother's murder go. She witnessed it with her own eyes, shame on them. My heart goes out to Heidi. ❤

This made me cry sad and happy tears. What an amazing lady Loretta must have been to not only stifle the screams of fear and pain to save her daughters life, but to think of writing the name in blood. Let me tell you as a mother I'd like to think I'd do the same thing, but primal instinct takes over and when that urge to survive kicks in, it's really hard to curb it. So hats off to her, she done what she needed to do and it's only fitting that the child she fought so hard to protect would be the one to fight so hard for justice! The neighbor that was asked to watch the dogs was absolutely brilliant/awesome!!! She became a detective asap and asked the questions & in the right way and got the confession to solve the murder that they would’ve never had enough evidence for PERIOD! Mom wasn’t hiding evidence that they would’ve been able to use back then. She saved evidence to bring future forensics & detectives to solve this case & bring that horrendous POS to justice!!

What a devoted daughter. I'm sure her mom would be proud.

I don't think that they missed anything, in fact. They arrested him, they just didn't have enough evidences to go to trial. Presumably the testimony of a 4 yo was considered too unreliable (assuming even that she hadn't already forgotten about it and could testify), and even though he was recognized by the 10 yo he assaulted, there was no evidence that it was the same guy who did the assault and the murder. And since someone remembered about the name written in blood, it means that this too was known back then. It seems to me that the new enquirers just rediscovered the same evidences already know at the time and wouldn't have been able to do anything this time around, either, if he hadn't spilled the beans himself.

I feel so heartbroken for this little girl who lost her mom in such a horrific manner. But I am so glad that her friend, David didn’t just listen to her story and chose not to do anything about it. I am so happy she finally got the justice for her mom and this family can heal from the tragedy knowing this monster is behind bars.

I started bawling when she said her mom looked like sleeping beauty while she was laying in her casket 🥺

Now she can’t even get closure because her grandmother isn’t around for her to ask why she kept this a secret!!! This is so terrible!

There's zero reason to believe that she kept it a secret, especially since she even wrote it down. Presumably her detailed notes about what her granddaughter had said were precisely intended to inform the police. The files were lost, so we don't know what the police was told at the time, but the guy was arrested, so presumably they knew.

Her grandma probably scared when Tom attacked the wrong kid and feared for her granddaughter's safety. Hence why she kept telling her granddaughter to let go but still kept everything written down and collect every piece of news. Thankfully she kept the box and didn't throw it away. I guess she herself cannot let it go even though she adviced her granddaughter to do so.

So the grandmother knew all along and didn't say anything wtf!

Yeah, that’s what I wanna know! Also, I wonder if it was the grandmother that took the picture of the victim’s daughter at the crime scene… Knowing there were no crime scene pics… all the information she saved for later …maybe the grandmother was scared of saying something… so strange tho🥺

Since someone who remembered it told the police, the letters in blood thing was known at the time, so the cops were aware of it back then. But two letters in blood aren't an evidence that a specific person committed the murder.

A Hero is someone who gives their own life for the preservation of another. Heidis' mom is the true definition of the word, she died a terrible and painful death, in silence, to save the life of her child.

This is one of the best Crime channels I’ve watched so far thank you for explaining what’s going on and not being so overly loud during it or long exaggerated sentences your channel is great keep up the good work

What an amazing story of love that reaches beyond the grave. I can hardly fathom that her mom was able to go against every instinct and die silently and not fight back! True love!

I know that different people react differently to crimes like this but her mother not wanting to pursue justice blows me away. Her sister said she has mixed feelings and that her Mom just wanted her sister to rest in peace. I don't believe that would be possible for a murder victim to rest in peace if their murderer is never caught. Also, this very young child found her mother murdered, covered in blood! Why wouldn't anyone in the family realize that this would be devastating for her and get her help?

Why in the actual f*** did they take a picture of her over her mother's blood.... That is so freaking weird to me

I can't believe the mom never mentioned the name in blood she tried to leave. Especially after the lilgirl picked him out all of it is crazy just glad she finally got the justice she deserved.

The cops really dropped the ball back when it first happened, and the grandmother had in a journal that her granddaughter was saying “Tom killed my mom”. Why didn’t she give that information to the police ? The answer was there all along, but no one cared enough to solve the crime. Then for all of the evidence to come up missing? Maybe Tom had a friend, or relative in the police department. I’m so happy that justice was finally served, but I only hope that in all this time Tom hasn’t hurt, or killed anybody else.

That is so sad that her grandmother couldn't compose herself enough for her granddaughter. She isn't the only one suffering the loss. She is a little girl who lost her mother. How on earth can you tell her to "let it go"

It makes me think that the grandmother was also an emotionally-repressed person, didn't know how to deal with her own grief, and it also didn't occur to her that she could grieve with her granddaughter.

They seem to have listened, they even arrested the guy. But "my 4 yo granddaughter said that it was Tom" wasn't enough to go to trial.
