Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

I honestly have difficulty finding good examples of foreshadowing in crime stories, so I think she has a good point. If you focus on making the motive, opportunity and means connect, the foreshadowing either happens on its own or just isnt necessary altogether

Foreshadowing absolutely happens in detective crime stories. You're supposed to make the viewer feels as if they're solving the crime along with the detective and you can't do that without clues. You also sprinkle in the red herrings to mislead intentionally so the clues aren't as obvious.

For people who keep criticizing her about foreshadowing, keep in mind that Se7en did not have any foreshadowing at all. Kevin Spacey appeared out of nowhere in the third act. So it can work with a murder mystery. It's all about how you execute it.

The story goes Kevin Spacey specifically didn't want his name in the opening credits just so it would be more shocking for the audience to see that it was him.

True but some of his actions could be traced to certain things earlier in the film - like playing the journalist taking a photo of Brad Pitt. So it didn’t feel totally contrived.

Very informative, however, I'm pretty sure you need foreshadowing no matter the genre, otherwise you're kind of cheating when you just pull something out of nowhere. It can be subtle, and can lead to different possibilities, but it's got to be there.

Her definition of red herring seems very idiosyncratic. Id like to see how other mystery writers define it. And there is no way she doesn't foreshadow. If the murderer is a complete surprise that's bad writing. You should ask her how she makes sure the murder makes sense to readers once they are revealed and how that differs from foreshadowing.

MOM (means opportunity motive) is how you make the murderer make sense, even without foreshadowing.
