Great choices Pastor Tim, I agree with all your choices but for me I would replace the ESV with the NASB. You can’t replace KJV & NKJV in the Psalms. I agree with you including the NLT and CSB in there, we need accessible translations. Of those two I prefer the CSB as it seems more faithful to me. They are both easy to read and the NLT is a pleasure to read but sometimes it strays so far into the realm of modern relatable language that it’s feels a bit more like a Bible play “reenactment” than scripture. I think CSB strikes a good balance but it suffers in the poetry. And I agree with you that NKJV is a winner. Overall KJV & NKJV are my top two with NASB/LSB being my third. Fourth and fifth would be CSB and NLT. 👍🏾

I also like the RSV-2CE along with the ESV-CE. Those are my two top Catholic translations. I really have no love for the NAB/NABRE and NRSV-CE.

If I had to pick four and only four translations to recommend to people in general, I'd pick: 1. ESV 2. CSB 3. NIV 4. NLT I like other translations (e.g. NASB, LSB, LEB, NKJV, KJV, NET). But I think these would be my top four to recommend. Not because I think they're "the best", as I don't think there's necessarily such a thing, and besides it's more about "best for what purpose?" Rather I'd recommend these four because I think these four well balance and well cover a wide spectrum of factors. Factors like accuracy, clarity, naturalness, the balance of written and spoken word, audience appropriateness, literary elegance, availability of a diverse range of Bibles from the publisher (e.g. affordable Bibles to premium Bibles, reader's Bibles to study Bibles), supporting material available in the translation (e.g. commentaries, dictionaries, atlases), controversy and debate surrounding the translation, etc. Just my two cents' worth, that's all. 😊

❤ this. When I started (not saying when) KJV and I think the RSV and ASV were around but choice was limited. I had a dictionary for word work and a Crudens Concordance. If I didn't understand something I was told to read it over again and again until I did. That actually helped in school.

As a pastor, I recommend the CSB to most folks. The translators did a great job of meeting their translation goals to leave no aspect of the original language text unaccounted for in translation, and to render the text using natural English that is as easily comprehended as possible. I preach, teach, and do my devotional reading from the CSB. I also recommend the ESV Study Bible. The ESV is a great revision and their study bible is second to none. For serious study, I recommend the NASB 95. For younger folks and folks that have more difficulty with reading comprehension, I recommend the NLT. I also tell them that at the end of the day they should choose the translation / revision that they will read and understand, as the common English translations we have are all good and reliable.

I love the CSB too (as well as the ESV and also the NLT)! 😊 However the only thing I don't like about the CSB is that it doesn't sound as literarily beautiful to my ears, especially in the poetic sections like the Psalms. I much prefer the ESV for literary beauty. Otherwise though I love the CSB for its accuracy, clarity, naturalness, etc. 😊

@@jestyjoshua I would say the WEB is on the more literal side. It uses the ASV(1901) as its base text while including the majority text readings. The NET has a good full notes edition if you want the translator notes. Not sure if that helped or not.

NASB 2020: I've not read cover to cover yet but it checks out when comparing verses during parallel readings. I'm on NASB 95 now and I really like it but honestly it's not doing anything that ESV NKJV NIV aren't, it's not awkward or intellectual in some profound way when using a clean text edition (not full of italics, bold, parentheses, nonstop invasive notes, etcetera), honestly I think using an *amplified* version it's probably better for study notes and worded clearer than NKJV but NKJV is actually worded for more nuance and the notes aren't nearly as distracting ..... they're peers. I really need to get a pair of premium SCRs but my list is bloated already.

I love the ESV due in part to the elegance and all the resources from Crossway. I use to use the NASB 95, but I am not a big fan of the 2020 update. It’s a good translation, but I’ve found several verses where they insert their theological views via interpretation-I’d rather them just translate it directly from the original. I’m only through Numbers in my read through the 2020 (I did read through the NT), but it’s still a solid translation. If you’re interested to check out some of those verses that I found just this last week here they are (Num. 11:17, 25; 14:18) they aren’t bad, but that’s not what’s in the Hebrew. I can understand 11:17, 25 even though it departs from the norm, but 14:18 is just not what it says in the Hebrew. Still it’s solid for the most part.

Adding to what I shared, I have been recommending the CSB and NLT to new readers of the Bible. CSB for general use and study and the NLT as a second reader or a main translation for those who struggle with reading and/or reading comprehension. I love the English in the NLT. It's the best reading Bible I've come across. There are times I don't want to like it or recommend it... but it's just too good ignore IMHO.

Right now my top four translations are the NKJV (personal reading), NASB '95 (first read through for study and Discovery Bible Study), NLT (second read through for Discovery Bible Study), and the Berean Standard Bible (I'm doing my Scripture memory out of this translation -- this is my top translation right now). Honorable mentions are the NIV and CSB. The BSB is the NIV '84 and HCSB update I always wanted. I just wish there were more physical formats to choose from (i.e. I would love to have a single column large print like the Holman CSB).

I really enjoy the ESV but read many. My 9 year old has used the NLT and NIrV mostly but just recently asked for an ESV and she now carries that to church and read it on her own.

ESV, NKJV, CSB, NIV, and NLT are all very good translations, with different philosophies and reading levels. Like you said, the recommendation depends on the convert/congregant and where s/he is regarding reading level and spiritual maturity.

As a personal choice. I'm done with the 2011 NIV. Still like the 1984 NIV.

Nice video. I agree that the language of the Bible, which is not just any other book, should not only be understandable, but also beautiful and edifying. As a non-native English speaker, I like very much the NKJV and the RSV. I also love the KJV, but I do need to have a dictionary at hand while reading it so I don't misinterpret the text.

My top 4 translations: NKJV ESV ASV & NIV I love the word for word for the the first 3. They speak to me the most, and I love preaching and doing in depth Bible study with them. The NIV I love for personal devotion reading.

I like all your recommendations and follow your thinking on order. I've given CSB mostly but also ESV. I agree on the NLT for younger people but don't have too many in my circle that would need that translation. I did run across someone way out of normal and gave him a Legacy Standard Bible. As Christians we are blessed to have so many translations to help whoever comes across our path in this area.

Agree with you on all counts. I use all 4 but mainly use NKJV. I also use The New English Bible by Oxford, which I don’t believe is in print. It uses the translation I used when I came back to the Lord in the 70s. It’s what I’m use to. Memorized most often in KJV or New English Version.

These are solid recommendations for people. Thank you. My main Bible is the NAS95, but any good Critical Text could easily replace it. If I did not read the NAS95, I would read the ESV. I grew up on the NKJV and I still have a soft spot for that, but I have chosen to move to the NAS95.

As a seminary graduate and Bible College instructor, I have found the NASB to most often translate with accurate precision for study. Thus, even for devotional reading, I trust it and profit from it more.

My standard translation of choice is the NASB but lately I have read out of the NLT just to get a fresh perspective on Scripture. I also have this translation in an audio Bible that I listen to at bedtime.

The top two I rotate through are the ESV and the NKJV. I read the CSB for flyover studies. One that surprised me was the NASB 2020. I used to use the 1995 a lot and at first the 2020 seemed dumbed down, but I relized the word flow is better and it just uses words that are more common use. I have been diving more into it as of late.

Good recommendations. I can't find fault with the NKJV, but it's never been one I have gone to. I am definitely on board with recommending the NLT, not just to first timers or young believers, but to anyone wanting a plainspoken text. If ever I am struggling with something from the ESV, the NLT usually helps me think it through. I've really been enjoying the BSB as a reader and haven't (yet) found anything in it that bothers me. I think it works about as well as the CSB in terms of readability, and I find the entire Berean Bible "project" fascinating.

I pastor in eastern Kentucky and there’s a strong KJV presence here. I preach from the nkjv. First off I love it for all the same reasons Tim does. I'm a die hard NKJV fan, but I'm finding I have to explain words in it to people all the time. When I'm giving someone a bible, I give the CSB. If I was starting out, that's what I would use for my main squeeze.

I recommend the CSB to adults and the NLT to youth. I only recommend the ESV to adept readers of literature. And no, that doesn't mean readers of the latest popular NYT bestseller: I mean people who are enthralled by what they read in an English Lit class.

I’ve compared several translations and my favorite is the Legacy Standard Bible and the NET if I get to sections that are a little awkward because they are so literal. The LSB has the name of God in the Old Testament (which I know some debate if that’s really HIS name but regardless is reads much smoother and more personal), textus receptus in brackets so the reader knows it’s questionable but still there, In the Old Testament they literally “cut a covenant” which the text reflects, in the New Testament the Old Testament prophecies are clearly marked etc. I write down the sections that are difficult with the net translation in the margins. Some people complain about Masters University and this update to the NASB 95 because of the association with McArthur but this translation was reviewed by a large team of people of various Christian faiths. My personal favorite translation!

Man I'm with you on NKJV and ESV Tim. And yes, from time to time I'll still reach for NLT to get me through some tough areas. I've never warmed up to CSB however. I suppose (this will sound silly) I find the bold old testament references so distracting that it simply turns me off. Oh I understand what they're doing (I read the preface!), but that bold text annoys me so much I simply don't read NT out of it. I will use it in OT however from time to time.

My faves in order: KJV, NIV, NKJV, CSB. I have only poked around the ESV and find the KJV and NKJV cover what I would get from it. Curious about NLT based on it being a respected friend's favorite and generally good things I have heard. I will always read the it even though it has kind of become the Rodney Dangerfield of translations. I still love it.

NASB or NKJV for those who have grown as believers, ESV for new believers and teens, NIrV for those with reading difficulties.

For a more "grace" oriented version try the Mirror study bible. Still in progress with not all the books yet translated. Youngs literal is also good. Not an easy read but helpful when wanting to bypass translator bias.

I don't mind the CSB but there is something about it that doesn't click with me like the NIV or NLT. It could also be that the ones I have are poorly constructed so it discourages me from picking them up. But it seems CSB is getting better at that.

NKJV my favorite 😊

No problem with your choices, and my primary reading / preaching Bible is the NKJV too. I'd swap out the CSB though, and push the NLT a notch higher to include most of your target group for CSB as well as youth and brand new believers. I would stick to the three remaining most often, but for the sake of four, I would insert the NASB for mature believers wanting to teach, preach, prepare... it's still in first place for word-for-word accuracy, IMHO. Just my 2-cents...

Top 4 for me... NKJV CSB NIV ESV That said I do also own and sometimes read/reference the KJV, NASB and NLT but they're not translations I really enjoy reading currently. I do also own and occasionally enjoy reading the NET and LSB, as well as an Amplified Holy Bible. My NET is a Full Notes Edition (which is why I got it). As a reference resource it took me a while to realize that I actually like the text translation itself. I find the NASB to be a bit dry and yet really like the LSB. I do enjoy the NKJV (much more than the KJV, I grew up with that and think I have KJV PTSD, lol) and bonus points to it as that's what my church uses. The ESV fits my want for a more formal sounding Word of GOD, while being totally understandable. While initially I was a bit unplussed by both the NIV and CSB they have both really grown on me and have been quite enjoyable as reading Bible translations lately. I do find that for myself the NLT is a bit too paraphrase but if it helps people read and understand the Lord than God Bless!

Here's my top 4 I recommend: 1. The Orthodox Study Bible 2. Douay-Rheims Bible 3. ESV-CE 4. New American Bible 1991

I would recommend that your 'Main translation" be the one your church uses for worship. Make that one your bread and butter Bible.

KJV for reading, NEB for study.

For me it's NKJV. ESV, CSB, and NET. Previously I would have included the NASB95, but with the direction of it's successors, plus having the NET translation notes to help better understand confusing verses, I'm dropping it off this ranking.

I’m a KJV guy but have no difficulty recommending the NKJV. And I agree a good case can be made for the NLT (especially the NLT LASB) for new believers. But the ESV-ugh!

ESV was my primary for years.

I’ve used the NIV84 ever since I received a copy as a Christmas present in December 1984. I prefer the NIV84 over the newer translations of the NIV (2011, etc.) because I think God inspired the original writers to use gender-specific words for a reason.

Hi Tim! What are your thoughts on the “missing” verses in the newer translations that use the critical text? I use multiple translations, but I prefer the KJV/NKJV. I have heard many times that none of the “missing verses” actually affect any doctrines, but that begs the question to me - if they don’t affect doctrines and are ultimately benign in the grand scheme of things, why not just leave them in? I have studied the arguments for both the TR when the critical text extensively and I believe there are good arguments to be made on both sides which is why I use multiple versions. I would love to hear your Input on this!

The NLT, NIV, NRSV, are the ones I recommend. The first two for new Christians for an accessible translation, The NRSV because I like my Word for Word bible to be non-evangelical. I also recommend the CJSB for Jewish insights into the scriptures. Another option would be a parallel bible with several translations side by side so you get many insights that one translation alone cannot provide. For high-quality early modern English, you can't really beat the KJV or the Geneva Bible. The NKJV also has a similar lineage so is worth looking at. I have an HCSB and an MEV in my collection as well.

@@jesuguru2394 NRSV is a more cross denominational translation foregoing a particular theological bias. Often called an ecumenical translation as it caters for a more neutral translational bias. It's a bit like political bias in newspapers. Theological bias in translation may lead to word choices that support the theological position of the translator. Rather than letting the scripture itself lead the translation. All translations are in many ways more of a commentary than a direct word for word or thought for thought equivalent. This is particularly true of the Hebrew language which often contains more nuances within its structure than direct transliteration into English can provide.

@@SoulPoetryandOtherWorks Hmm... food for thought. Neutrality is a bit of a myth, to be human means to have bias (conscious or otherwise). Though the word "evangelical" itself has become politicized, in the past especially it often referred to someone who believes the Bible is the Word of God. Which it is. I'd be averse to anyone translating a Bible who did not have an evangelical perspective - that they are translating the literal words of God into another language, and approach that task with the sacred soberness and mindfulness it deserves.

@@jesuguru2394 True. That is often why committee based translations are preferred to single translator based ones limiting bias. However, doctrine should never influence the transliteration of scripture. The scripture itself should influence doctrine.

I always recommend the KJV over anything else BUT big BUT there is a new one out called the simplified KJV and I recommend that first for any new believer. I just wish they would release a high quality bible as the pages are crap when it come to notetaking. I like it so much for an easy read and they are so affordable that I've thought of carrying some in my car to give to those who are searching and have never read the bible.

There's Bibles that have multiple English translations. These can be helpful in the transition period for new converts or the younger generations as they mature in their walk in Christ.

Any thoughts on the Barbour Simplified KJV or the KJVER? I like the thought of reading the KJV but with the “outdated” words just replaced with modern equivalents.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews Oh okay thx. I'm considering buying a study bible. My two choices are 1. NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible by Zondervan or 2. ESV Study Bible.... Should translation be a deal breaker? Idk have you used the first one? It's more theologically broad compared to the ESVSB, offering more viewpoints when discussing some controversial verses. But idk if the ESV still offers better resources.

KJV, NKJV, NET, and NLT. But I also like ESV & CSB.

I always recommend a literal translation. KJV if they read and understand Shakespeare. NASB 1995, ESV 2016, and NKJV are all excellent translations and readily available. The CSB is my recommendation as a cross reference when using a literal translation.

I'd probably go with NKJV, ESV, CSB as by recommendations, but to honour the video idea, might go with the NIV as a distant 4th. I'm afraid I lost interest in the NLT when I read Isaiah 7:9 early in my reading and realised that respectfully, they had made it up. There is no justification from the Hebrew for changing the focus on what God is saying. After that, I just lost confidence and would spend too much time wondering about the translation. If they did it once, how could I be sure they won't do it again?

Everyone gets the NLT wrong. It’s not just reading level, it’s Christianese and poetic writing. Nobody knows what propitiation, justification, elect, “walking in path” and such mean unless you’ve already read the Bible once or twice. For this reason, the Yoda-speak in other translations mean that NASB is more readable than NIV in some places!

Yes, the main strength of the NLT is its ability to clarify points that would have been clear to the original audience. With other translations, study notes are far more essential for crossing that millennia-wide divide. The only downside is that it's very, very biased toward a conservative Protestant reading of many verses, to the point that I'm surprised that it has a Catholic edition. (The bishops were really okay with the words, "Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear," rather than the more typical wording of Philippians 2.12, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling"?) Despite being a Protestant myself, I want every bestselling translation to be one that all major Nicene branches of Christianity can use without feeling like they're compromising their beliefs.

There is no such thing as a "word for word" translation. Anyone who knows more than just English knows that. There are more literal translations, but if you read Hebrew or Greek "word-for-word" it is very difficult to understand. Take a read of the NET. Not only is it a fantastic translation into English, but it includes ALL of the translator notes! It's a fantastic study Bible.

For very many years now, both US general readers and also US serious students of the Bible consistently have chosen the same three versions - KJV, NKJV, ESV - as the top three versions. For many years, to 2020 inclusive, the fourth version was NIV, overtaken from 2021 by NLT. In 2023, for example, these four top versions were preferred by 76% of US general readers, and by 78% of serious students. Of other versions, NIV was preferred by 7% of general readers, CSB by 10%, NASB by 2% NRSV by 2%, and Others by 2%.; while NIV was preferred by 7% of serious students, CSB by 4%, NASB by 4%, NRSV by 4%, and Others by 3%. Publishers and pundits alike seem anxious to avoid - even, evade - these uncomfortable statistics! At the same time, there seems to be avoidance - even, evasion - of the various OECD [Office of Economic Co-Operation and Development] assessments, which show declining literacy in the US : currently, the portion of the adult population counted as “functionally illiterate” or nonliterate [below Basic Level 2- the level required to cope with everyday tasks] is between 19% and 21%. General literacy is declining; and Biblical literacy is plummeting ; but schools are not improving matters, and churches are barely lifting a finger to teach Bible reading skills. I write, to Yanks. as a Brit - and the UK is in a worse position than the US!

For me: 1. ESV 2. CSB 3. NASB (Hebrew/Greek Keyword) 4. NKJV 5. NLT I've read through the NIV, but its not one i like too well or recommend.

I prefer the NASB2020 over the CSB.

I always compare Galatians 3:16 and Genesis 12:7. If the latter contradicts the former, I don't use it.

"Offspring" can be acceptable because it can be singular. "Descendants" is inappropriate because Paul specifies that God was using the singular version of the word.

I know that this isnt the best place to ask this but I'd like your advice since I'll.assume you know a lot about what the Word says and can rightly divide scripture. I've been struggling with a terrible Lust addiction for over a decade before coming to Jesus and even today when I cried and asked for Jesus to cleanse me and fix me for what is probably the umpteenth time I still end up falling for my same.old desires and temptations every time and I really don't wanna lose my salvation..or was I never saved and I'm some false convert who's deluded himself into thinking he was ever saved..what do I do I despise this flesh so much and I really wish I didnt have this addiction. Its no excuse. Sin is sin and The LORD detests sin to the max. What do i even do anymore after falling for the 100000th time as if I never learned from my mistakes..

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews i use both and have been blessed by both, the book of Enoch had kept me from going to Judaism, and also the wisdom of Solomon and Jubilees

Tim, I like the ESV as a translation but I think they made some questionable complementarian choices, seems as if they brought meaning to the Bible, instead of the other way around, I won't use it. I am reading a NRSV for the New Testament right now and I really like it. I also like the New English Bible for the language. I don't need any more Bibles right now, but I think I will get a paper copy of the CSB at some point. I have the HCSB on my kindle and it does read very well.

I understand your conviction.

1. NASB 1977 2. NKJV 3 GENEVA BIBLE 4. KJV 5. YLT.

After going down a translation rabbit hole this last year, these are my preferred, in order: NASB2020, NLT, NKJV, CSB. The NASB2020 is my daily driver. I keep the NLT handy in case I read something in the NASB where it doesn’t fully “click” or I find myself stumbling over some of the prose. The NLT is a great reference tool for specific points of clarification. The NKJV has a timeless poetry to it but it’s even more clunky than the NASB2020 at this point. The CSB is what kicked me down this rabbit hole and I still appreciate it but since the NASB2020 has trended a bit more toward “optimal equivalence” compared to its 1995 or 1977 predecessors, I don’t find myself going back to the CSB as much. Honorable mention to the BSB, which reminds me the most of the NIV84, the Bible I grew up with. I keep meaning to buy a copy but my wife would probably kill me if another Bible shows up in the mail.

Nasb series is good. NlT is better than most people think. NkJV is close to NASB 95. Lock-in italicized added words. So does NKJV

The most recent update of the ESV was in 2016, and that one received criticism for being overtly antifeminist, not for being progressive.

ESV 2001 (original translation) ESV 2002 (Anglicized Edition) ESV 2007 (First revision) ESV 2011 (Second revision, less than 500 words changed) ESV 2016 (Third revision, changes 52 word) ESV 2018 (Catholic revised edition) ESV 2019 (The Augustine Bible, by Augustine Institute) The ESV has been criticized for gender-exclusive language and having a bent towards Reformers or Calvinistic interpretation. I avoid it.

@@SpaceCadet4Jesus Thank you for your honest and documented information. Disappointed in Nickles's abrupt dismissal when all I wanted was an honest opinion. I had just received the huge ESV Buffalo leather study Bible when I saw that video where they decided to change the WORDs of God and immediately returned it. I just wanted an opinion on whether I had acted rashly or foolishly. It was not forthcoming.

CSB yes…others …no…don’t want anything to do with the KJV or the manuscripts that it is translated from…too many mistakes and added verses…👎
