There are 2 updated translations that were not necessary. The 2011 edition of the NIV and the NRSVue. The 84 edition of the NIV and the 89 edition of the NRSV did not need updating. Both updates were not for the better.

It is concerning to me, And frustrating, that they are revising it again. When they said the 2016 revision was the PERMANENT revision, I expected no more changes. I've got a bunch of 2016 ESV's, and it has been my primary translation for reading and study. If they actually do change it AGAIN!! I might have to switch to the NKJV, as you have, as my main translation. It is very frustrating, because I love the ESV.

i don’t have a problem with a translation staying current, but i am worried when a committee gets together they feel the obligation to “do something” ... Change for change sake to justify the committee’s existence.

"I end up making videos like this, which helps my channel." 🤣 Do you sometimes think there is a bit of an ego issue with these committees "having to meet" every 10 years or so for a possible translation update? It's as if they want to stay in the spotlight of being a relevant contributor rather than letting translations sit for 20-30 years and potentially having to pass up the position to the next and younger generation. Also add in the fear of the possibility that the next and newer committee may potentially mess up what was already fine in the first place.

Contrary is the better translation because it relates to Gen 4:7, but generally it doesn't seem bad to update if they're trying to remove old biases. But i suppose this is all moot given everybody interprets the Bible their own way.

I agree on new discoveries, they can be updated as footnotes. I actually like the NASB 2020, I don’t think it is an update of the 1995 but a totally new translation. One thing about KJV, for me personally, is not the archaic words - those are easy to find and understand, it is false friends that makes me leery. I do not want to misunderstand or misinterpret the word of God, and I feel like false friends might make me do that. If I’m super familiar with other modern English translations, I might be able to catch them but I’m not there yet. Mark Ward does amazing work on this subject.

I’m in total agreement brother. I’ve been reading the NASB95 since it came out, and while I enjoy the 2020, the frequent changes are too much and it really destroys the possibility of memorization.

Amen brother. First off, there are way too many translations out there. Don't get me wrong, the major ones, NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, KJV, CSB, LSB all have something to offer, but really do we need all of them. I mean the modern ones, based on the newest manuscripts basically say the same thing. I guess everybody has to get their own piece of the pie. As far as updating them so much, I agree, it's unnecessary. Did they get the translation right the first time or not? It's hard to have faith in something that changes all the time. The truth is though, it's not really about updating, it's about the money. Publishers know that certain number of people that are loyal to a certain translation, with have to have the "newest, greatest, updated edition." Me personally, I good with the KJV/NKJV. I grew up on the KJV, so it feels like home, and the NKJV is like going to a favorite uncle's house for a visit. It's not home, but it's close enough.

I'm fine with every decade. And I still think the NKJV needs an update. 😉 The ESV in general has been too finicky. I agree. But I have never been in a church in 30yrs where people got flustered by translation difference. Most churches put the reading on the screen nowadays anyway. Which *does* bother me. Because it discourages the congregation from following themselves. And that undermines Sola Scriptura and the Priesthood of believers.

We are blessed with so many translatuons in our language, yet other languages have not one verse in their language. We need to focus on foreign translation efforts for now.

Being new to the faith in 🇬🇧 I have found every copy or edition I have purchased a great blessing. First was ESV, then a KJV, ESV study bible, NASB 95, John Macarthur NASB 95 study bible, Catholic Adventure Bible, Douay-Rheims, Catholic Mens Bible NAB, Catholic Truth Society Bible (UK), NKJV and NLT filament edition. I love them and read them, the NLT read through a few times makes it easier to read more formal editions, but I am glad they are out and about for the cost of a days wage. I wouldn't buy a newer or updated version of what I have... yet always open to an edition I have yet to read. I came late in life to the word and would rather an hour or two in it than watching the box or an old movie again.

I would like it is they actually put Gods names in instead of Lord. As I understand it there is 3-5 names for God in the original language and they meant different aspects of God or something. I think the Jews didn’t say Gods name because it was too respected but still would be nice. could you maybe to a video addressing this? Would be interesting

Agreed this is why I use kjv and nkjv mainly and older translations. I get study bibles to read the notes and just started the CSB and was surprised at how that’s already been updated or being updated. It’s become to much honestly.

I'm all for updates when they reflect advances in scholarship. I prefer to let a more accurate reconstruction of the text dictate theology rather than theology dictate the translation. I couldn't care less about memorization. In my former profession, I have seen significant damage caused to an engine by someone who had "memorized" torque specs....

I agree with you. When I became a Christian (from Judaism), I couldn't believe how many translations there were. It was so very confusing, coming from a one-used translation world to the world of Christianity! Then, I had multiple Christians telling me (and yelling) that I was reading the "wrong" translation when I did finally buy a Christain Bible. It was terrible, honestly, and very confusing.

I don't think updates are that necessary. I believe the possibility does exist for tampering with Scripture, which is dangerous. I am not a scholar, but have 7:38 done some study on this issue. I am a fan of the older versions. I use the KJV, NKJV, NASB 1995, NIV 1984, and RSVCE. And for sheer readability the CSB. A note to clarify. I say the RSVCE because the Deuterocanonicals are available in that version. NKJV is my go to Bible.

Lockman can update the NASB all they want, as frequently as they want! Just so they keep the NASB 95 in print, I'm good. 😂 But you make a good point. Case in point: Our church has NRSV pew Bibles. The NRSV as it stood prior to the NRSVue is *gone* - totally OOP. So we can't replace less than all of the pew Bibles, or add even one, without suffering two different versions in the pews. Wouldn't bother me - while the reader is reading the NRSV in worship, I'm reading the NASB 95, and that works for me - but of course all our pew Bibles should be the same.

Another reason to consider is audio bibles. Nothing more distracting than listening/following along to an audio Bible that is not in line with the current revised/updated translation.

I think every current text for ever translation that is available right now should be untouched for the next century unless some earth shattering texual doscovery or a massively dramatic English language change occurs before 100 years lol. Everything out now is fine for study and learning about God and Christ, as you said, we actually have an embarrassment of riches in translation choices. Great video. I gave up on all the translation-update-nonsense and just stuck with the KJV. My practice remains to study from many different translations, but the KJV is my Bible. I strongly believe that God preserved His word in the original languages and that we should do what we can to have that same stability in our English translations. I also distrust all the modern critical changes. In my home church, the pastor uses (mostly) the NIV in the pulpit, but I see people in the congregation (when they bring their Bibles) with the NIV, NASB, NKJV, ESV, etc. How do we build unity when we are all reading from different translations? Sure, you can say, "Well, they are 95% or 99% (or whatever) the same." But the difference in wording (even though the meaning may be identical) is a challenge. Could you imagine a math class where students are using different textbooks at the same time? Well, they all teach how to factor polynomials correctly, even though they do so differently. So waht does it matter? It matters a lot. Still, I'm not sure how to bridge the gap in the modern world. Yet, the proliferation of translations coupled with the frequent updates is a disaster for building disciples and strengthening doctrinal education. I'm also not saying this means we should all use KJV, just because I do. I feel strongly in my spirit that I am to stick with it. All I'm saying is that it would be good to settle on a universal English transaction as the canonical translation that we could stick with for the next 413 years. I'd love that to be one based on the TR, if I were to have a vote.

Of the TR and CT are so similar to alter nothing theologically, would you be fine getting a compact McLaren without the complete footnotes on their variants as long as the font size wasn’t an issue? I’m trying to switch back but it can be challenging to abandon one you’ve read for a while lol
