I used to be a 3-4 on listening but would rate myself a 7-8 now and still working on improving. The reason it was so bad is I would overthink the conversation, whether it was thinking about something else related to how I responded or thinking about how I would respond before the other person was done talking. Both of these things distracted me from listening to the other person’s response or the second half of whatever they would say. I’ve been forcing myself to keep my thoughts surface level and not sink into my own mind so much, it has enabled me to have deeper conversations and create deeper connections with those I spend my time with. The easiest way is to literally just listen intentionally and respond when they are done talking. Staying focused is hard, but if you force yourself, it gets easier every time and eventually becomes a habit. I’d say that’s worth the investment.

I practice listening with a group l'm part of ie An Empathy Circle which uses principles and a process from the work of Marshall Rosenberg in Non Violent Communication:. The process involves Observation rather than evaluation, identify Feelings and Needs, and make a Request rather than a demand. It is a method used to resolve conflict and is training in the art of truly listening to a person wholistically.

Thanks Jim, for the tips for active listening. Although I find listening and understanding things hard when people talk to me, I remember to write notes down. Also, I am not going to forget the acronym you were discussing because I find it is important to keep it in mind when listening to anyone: Halt, Empathy, Anticipate, and Review.

I think I'm at a 6 for listening skills. I could definitely improve a lot. My thinking is very slow and I often forget simple words. My processing speed seems to be slowing down as well. Sometimes I think about how I'm going to respond before they are done speaking so that I don't seam slow or stupid. I will try to stop doing this and see what happens. Thank you for the tips and suggestions. I appreciate it!

I believe as much as I am mostly able to Halt, Empathy, and Anticipate, I need to improve on review. It was actually funny that I wanted to move out to the next thing I wanted to do before I remembered even though this isn't a conversation, I out to review what I just heard on this video😁. Thank you🙇🏾‍♂ Jim Kwik

Just start by BREATHING and counting to ten before opening your mouth. Then remember you don't owe anyone an explanation , anything you say is on you . You don't have to place yourself into their drama in their head, we choose to So own up to your shortcomings and character defects and just listen. Maybe they don't want to hear your opinion, they just want someone to JUST LISTEN.

This is old method unaffective, People like me who have ADHD use following : - 1. Eye contact is creepy, specially when you're talkin to women. They thing you're staring. Always watch on floor and never move your head. 2. Don't nod your head, it distracts. Don't say aha aha. 3. Paraphrase, try to repeat in your mind what they are saying.
