The 180mm f2.8 If ED is derived from the Zeiss 180mm 2.8 made by Zeiss for photographers covering the 1936 Olympics. It was a fast telephoto for its time. Nikon simply took the design and perfected it. You can get the Zeiss 180mm F2.8 Sonnar but the Nikon version is better. Leica's 180mm F2 APO Summicron is considered the best 180mm produced. The price on Ebay for a used copy is around $9,000 US. The Nikon is a steel at the prices you see on Ebay. It is my go to lens for fashion, portraits when I have the room and for sports. Film and digital it is stellar. On a DX sensor it is a 270mm f2.8 If ED! perfect for sports and wildlife. 1/4 the weight of the 300mm f2.8 IF ED D.

I think the Micro Nikkor 55mm deserves some love. I am sure you've mentioned it sometime but I never saw it. I use it, 3.5, on my C body Sony, it's a great all around fun lens for manual photography. It's a little tank, doesn't need no stinking lens hood and of course it's got that feel.

I have owned the 180 since 1997. I chose the 135 over the 105. But they are both the same breed. Amazing lenses... very underrated indeed. Built like tanks. I wouldn't part with them at any cost. I bought the 28 1.4 g a few weeks ago. And it has become my everyday lens. Try one if you can.

I am in love with the 180 mm F/2.8. It's old but damn it's solid. Using it with the D800 gives an amazing experience for around 300$ (used). Not the sharpest at F/2.8 but close it down one notch and it's just great.

Fine optics are like fine watches, nothing really changes in 50 years (except minor details like water resistance) in terms of the craft and good things of yesteryear are still good things today. Heck, even the Petzval lens is still a really, really good lens today. It is not sharp to the edges but it was the first calculated lens and it was designed for portraiture.

Already have the 24mm and 180mm from your past recommendations and also 60mm Macro ...... Very happy with all of them but due to us all following your advise ..... now you have endorsed the 105mm i suspect the used price will as the others did go up .... but i can live with that i guess ... keep doing what you do

I own two out of the four mentioned. The others I have are the 18-35 IF ED D and the 24mm f2.8 AIS.Reason being, I still primarily use film and the gelded lenses will work on my F5's but not My F3 HP or my F2A bodies. Funny exact focal lengths, The 24mm f2.8 AIS is mechanical perfection better than the 24mm f1.4 but slower. If you need the speed then the 24mm f1.4 G is king I've been a pro for over 30 years, nothing beats great glass to help realize your creative vision.

Hi Ken. Just a quick note. I tried using my Nikon 105mm 2.8 D Macro lens on my D850 to focus stack. The option to focus stack in the menu on the back of the D850, is greyed out. Put a G lens on & bang focus stacking is back as an option. I am therefor assuming that all D series lenses won't focus stack on this camera?

Hi Ken love the channel I was wondering and it may be a stupid question but hey ho is there a noticeable difference in using a crop sensor vs full frame for landscapes say using a nikon d500 vs a nikon d500 as they have similar sensors with lenses that give approximately the same focal length for wide angle shooting again it may be a silly question but it's one I need to ask and a lot of people say yes defiantly go full frame for landscapes also keep up the honest reviews thanks matthew

Think people confusing the sensor size with the light circle. Thats why it is generally more advisable to get a DX lens fro crop sensors. I have tested a number of them myself and at the same aperture the FX lens is darker than the equivalent DX.

I’m not sure about the selection. One can get an Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8G ED on the cheap, the negatives are it doesn’t take normal filters and weights 1 kg. The Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art effectively replaces three 1.8 24, 28 and 35mm lenses. The negative is almost weight 1 kg. I also have the classic Zeiss Distagon 2/25, which is very underrated, though quite expensive used. The Nikkor 105mm f/2.0DC may be good but it doesn’t have special glass, and at $700-800 used, is still very expensive. I would recommend to save for the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E ED instead. If you use Z-cameras, the 105DC would be manual focus only and besides very poor at manual focusing. On the other hand, the Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D ED IF and 180mm 2.8 ED AI-S are both highly recommended. Wish one could get the 105mm f/2DC for $300-400.

One of theme i things get better with the years and it's the 18-35mm ! I love it on my D800 with the past but that lens make event more sense now !!! On Z series camera the things i dont love on that lens on start it's the ergonomie of that lens on dslr (still totally usable but i just find it weird) the that lens on FTZ make more sense versus the Z series lens! The ergonomie are soo nice on it. It's lighter (event with the FTZ added in the weight) IMO sharper and less expensive. That a totally keeper in my bag now !

Hi Ken, if my understanding is correct, you said in this video that the Nikon 24 mm f/1.4 was incredible. But if I remember right, in your previous videos, you did not seem to like this lens very much and you argued that at 1.4 it was not so good. Did you change your mind on the Nikon 24 mm f/1.4? Well, I would not disagree on this because I own this 24 f/1.4 and actually it is one of the lenses I used the most with my Nikon cameras because 24 mm is very convenient when you travel, it is lighter and smaller than a 24-70 lens and at the same time you can do low light photography. At 1.4, it is not that sharp but I think it is still decent and quite useful, especially when there is not enough light for a wider aperture and I want still to take a picture at 64 iso with my Nikon D850. Maybe, you should do another video on the Nikon 24 mm f/1.4 to give us your final thought on this particular lens.

Hi! I just got the 105 f2 DC NIKKOR and I’m having trouble with auto focus. I absolutely LOVE how this thing renders skin tones and bokeh, and when I manually focus, I can hit nicely even wide open. But auto focus lets me down 9 out of ten times. I tried fine tune calibration but it seems fine in that regard. Did I buy a bum lens?? I use a d610 btw, and I paid 700 bones for the 105 for what it’s worth. Anyway I hope you see this, and I’m a huge fan of the channel!

It's also a common problem with that lens. Mine won't focus properly until f3.2. I keep it at 3.5. Try shooting at 3.5. It's still the best portrait shooter even at 3.5.

It is hard to admit, but Fujifilm has nothing that compares to the Nikon AF 105mm f/2 D DC. If Nikon starts making mirrorless cameras, Fujifilm will be in serious trouble.

Fernando Opoka some of his opinions go against the mainstream. Sometimes I think he just does it for the heck of it. But on the 105 1.4, I was determined to get it as an Xmas gift. I checked it out at b&h last week and was totally underwhelmed. Surprisingly, they had been sold out. Tried the 135 1.8 sigma and 135 f/2 milvus. The Zeiss was the surprise performer. Having said that, ever since I got the 70-200 mm fl ed, which ken praised to death, before throwing it under the bus for tamron g2, I have been unable to justify buying another portrait lens. Save 600 bux more and get the 70-200 fl ed. It's a weapon of mass destruction that makes the 105 prime look like a a slug...and trust me,you will find the 1.4 aperture totally useless. All the best

angangaus the only problem of the 70-200 for me is the price, is damn over priced, and its true. It is also true that you won't use the 105 at 1.4 most of the time because the narrow DOF but that is not a negative point... sorry for my bad english

24mm f/1.8G and 105mm f/2 DC are not underrated IMHO. They are universally considered as very good lenses. Even the Canon and Sony people know how good the 105mm f/2 DC is.

The 105mm F2 DC is in a class on its own along with the 135mm f2 DC. you have amazing control of depth of field in both the foreground and background. No other lens manufacture make them.

@@gregoryvarano8002 4 years have passed, recently Canon made a 105mm macro with similar capabilities for their RF mount. However, that lens is intended to be a macro, and stopping down shifts the focus plane. To me that is unacceptable.

I don't think 24mm f/1.8G is underrated, almost all reviews and users claim it awesome. 105 f/2 and 180 f/2.8 are more forgotten than underrated (as the 135 f/2D, some Canon users even pretend there's no 135mm in the Nikon line when they talk about the f/2L). 18-35 f/3.5-4.5G is, but I think there's others lenses more underrated, e.g the 35 f/2D, the 85 f/1.8D or the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5D (just look at the second hand prices, almost for free ^^).
