I noticed your comment after watching your video. I’m sorry but his take is absolutely incorrect. “Not sharp” … tested similar to the Otus 28. Way better rendering too as the otus series has meh bokeh characteristics, ive compared the two. It’s an absolute masterpiece. His take on the 105 is equally as bad, another masterpiece. I believe his disdain for China manufacturing is definitely influencing his view. That and constantly talking in hyperbole. You can find the 28 1.4 for 900-1000 used. Bargain.

I will say sigma’s 28 1.4 is also excellent. But it’s a behemoth and doesn’t render as well IMO.

The 28mm 1.4e is a spectacular lens. It has nice falloff, focuses fairly close, and is perfect for environmental portraits. Not sure if it's suitable for video, since I don't use it for that. Mine is made in Japan, for what it's worth. The 105 is also a gem of a lens. You should give them both a try.

Hey Ken...second question...I really like the 35mm focal length for indoor groups of people. I'm looking for sharp images. Sorry I had to say it. Should I go for the Nikon 35mm f/1.4 for a whopping $1700 or put the money into the 24-70mm 2.8 VR? As I noted in my other post about the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 FX, one often doesn't shoot groups at 1.4, but the reason for it is the overall quality of the 1.4 lens. But would I be better off spening the money on the 24-70 VR for indoor shooting? Any advice would be appreciated. I know my details might be a little lacking.

Take a look at the reviews of the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 lens. It has VR and is cheaper than the Nikon. 24mm is useful for group shots in a cramped spaces and 70mm is useful when you can't get closer to fill the frame or crop out distracting backgrounds.

I thought to buy the 58mm 1.4G and the 105mm 1.4E at some point, to complement with the Canon 50mm 1.2L and the 85mm 1.2L II that render dreamy looking images wide open. Was wondering if it’s worth buying a fast prime wide angle, given how good are the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8G and the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L II, because fast aperture gives a shallow DOF only if the subject is right in front of the lens?

@@troyphillips1077 - Late response, but if other people are wondering maybe this will help. The 28/1.8D has a beautiful old rendering. I loved the lens, but was it worth the $3,000 price tag back in the day? Maybe. It was the only fast wide angle lens at the time. High demand kind of dictated prices - I bought mine for $2,500. ...Then it kind of became a collectors item when the 28/1.4E came out - but that steep 28/1.4E price didn't help bring the 28/1.4D price down. Low and behold the Z cameras, and the new big shift from DSLR cameras. This Z mount with the FTZ adapter basically renders the 28/1.4D useless aside from manual focus. So the pricing has come down significantly into the $1,200-$1,500 price range. So finally less expensive than a new 28/1.4E. The good thing is, Nikon still makes the 28/1.4E, so the used prices of those lenses is still fairly inexpensive. A good used 28/1.4E can be found for about $1,000, and it's worth every single cent if you're looking for something a bit wider than a 50mm lens, but not wanting to go quite as wide as 20 or 24mm. Ken has his opinions on these lenses; and having used all but the 105/1.4, I disagree with most of his assessments. Save for the 50/1.4G - that lens is just shit. However, the 28/1.4E is literally the GEM in the Nikon AF-S prime line-up. This lens is magic. It has a fast accurate AF - far better than what I experienced with the Nikon 24/1.4G, 35/1.4G, 50/1.4G, 58/1.4G, and the 85/1.4G. It's damn sharp wide open, and the rendering is beautiful, with a nice touch of mico contrast. The field of view and that bit of micro contrast gives it a nice 'pop'. They only way I'm going to sell mine is if Nikon comes out with a 28/1.4 S that's at least equal to this one, so I can go native to the Z cameras. But even then... it'll be hard to part with this lens. It's just phenomenal.

The 85mm 1.4 is a Highly idiosyncratic lens. You have to know how to use it. As u said, sharpness isn't everything, but mine is fine on that aspect and the way it renders is amazing. Either I lucked out on an exceptional specimen or you're vastly underestimating this lens.

The 85mm 1.4 gets better and sharper with a smaller aperture opening, such 2.2/2.8 etc. One does not have sacrifice too much on the Bokeh. I generally prefer to photograph outdoors and the pics look great. I guess, it also depends on the camera, sometimes my cropped sensor D5600’s pics look superb, while lousy on D850. Believe it or not. 85 f1.4 is not an easy lens, try it with a tripod on high megapixels cameras. I had 85 f1.8, I like that one as well. Might get it back.

I have the 50 f1.4D, purchased new in about 2000. I used to think it was great, and I have used it a lot. A. Lot. Then 2 things happened. First, I looked at my Lightroom history and discovered the only images from it I like are at f4 or f8. Then, I followed Ken's recommendation and bought a 50 1.8 E-series, which kicks the 1.4's butt, IMO, at all apertures. YMMV. I also have the 85 f1.4D, also bought new when it was current. When I was using it for theatre photography, I liked it a lot. But, again, I currently prefer the 85 AIS 2 or the 100 E-series for my photography (which is just for fun, these days). Sometimes I really want to not agree with Ken, but then I look at my own images with the same lenses that I like. I usually have to change my mind.

The 28/1.4E is the best AF-S prime lens Nikon makes. By a long shot. If you can find a refurb for $1,500 or a used one in good shape for $1,000, it's a steal. This is the one AF-S Nikon Prime (without getting into the exotics) that is worth every penny.

In this review, you also dislike the Nikkor 28mm 1.4 in this review - my question is whether the lens you critiqued was the latest/current 28mm AF-S 1.4 E ED version or an earlier model? I'm also seriously considering the Zeiss 28mm Distagon - I own it Canon mount (also the 35mm in both), the Nikon 28mm 1.8G and the Sigma 28mm 1.4 art. I'd really appreciate your thoughts. I am a portraitist and event photographer. The 85mm 1.4 gets better with a smaller aperture opening such as 2.2 and higher. I guess, it also depends, what camera you use it on. I used it on D5600 as well as on D850, and The pics look great, but yes, there is fringing. Which can be corrected in pp. I like the smoothness of the Bokeh; try it outside and with window lighting, no problem there. Yes, he is right, the focus is very limited, meaning 1 eye is sharper and the rest blurry, e.t.c., just go to f2.8, and it will look better. The 85 1.8 is also very decent. 50mm 1.8 is ok for general photography; depends, what quality you are looking for, I find the skin tones and textures grainy, not very good. Still looking for a good 50mm . My D850 camera dictates. I love 70-200 EFled VIII, excellent pairing with D850. The ED and VR make difference. Just keep on trying.

IF you had a choice - video for the Z6 - between Legacy Nikon 35mm or the Z 35mm and the Sigma Art 24mm 1.4 (which is pretty close $$$ to the Z 35mm 1.8) for MANUALLY pulling focus on a Rhino Arc II Slider (with Rhino Focus) where you can set two focus mark points. Using for actors in Studio with controlled LED lighting) I hear you can NOT really set focus on a Z lens because it’s “electronic” (?) predictably... but you set focus on the legacy lenses ie if you turn the focus back to a previous position you will get focus on the same object at the same distance.

When will you return to lens reviews? Your lens reviews are the best in the whole internet.

Hey Ken I am switching from my Sony a7rII and looking to get some lenses to start I was thinking the 35mm 1.4 and the 70-200 2.8 fl ed or whatever the newest one was. Is there anything else you'd recommend instead or think is better to start? I am getting the Nikon D850. Thanks KEN!

for shooting what and what budget? well i own all the current 70 200, and oddly the much cheaper G2 tamron is better than my $2800 70 200 E FL nikkor in many ways.......however the nikkor is more lightweight and has better no-bump buttons. i dont have enough info on WHAT you wanna shoot? :)

Theoria Apophasis truly not an unlimited budget but not enough for a 200mm f2! Lmfao! I shoot a lot of portraits and headshots and products photography and lifestyle that’s why I was thinking that 35mm 1.4 and the 70-200 2.8. So you think that tamron 2.8 is better and only $1300 which is nice. I am trying to become a full time photographer and trying to get a base lens collection. Also didn’t know what you thought about the 24 1.4 vs 35 1.4 for product photography and lifestyle! Thank you for getting back to me brother! Huge fan and really happy to be coming to the Nikon family! As soon as I can get a damn D850! Hahaha

  • @craigjohnchronicles2504

    @craigjohnchronicles2504

    3 жыл бұрын

@@PhiggysDOTcom The Nikon 85/1.4D is a league of it's own. The crinkle lenses - 28/1.4D, 85/1.4D, 105/2DC, 135/2DC and the 180/2.8ED - are all outstanding. The 135/2DC can be a bit glowey, but the image rendering is just special on all of those lenses. Wish the AF was compatible with the Z mount camera bodies. The Manual Focus lenses are so fun to use with the mirrorless cameras (save for Fuji cameras). They suck with DSLR cameras, including the Nikon DF. They have a whole new life with the Z cameras and focus magnification as well as focus peeking. The gems in this area are the 28/2 AIS, 50/1.2 AIS, 85/2AIS, 105/2.5 AIS, 135/2.8AI, 200/4 AIS. These particular lenses are small, fantastically built lenses with wonderfully dampened manual focus rings. The 50/1.2 has a crazy beautiful rendering wide open. They all have very good sharpness wide open, even on these high-res digital sensors, and have a beautiful rounded film-like image rendering. These lenses can be had for dirt cheap prices compared to their AF counter parts. ...but there are so many other Nikon Manual Focus lenses to explore. Some can be a bit expensive. There is a 1297 page thread on the Fred Miranda website, exclusively about using Nikon Manual Focus lenses. Highly recommend you check this out... www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/929565

Then I bought a 35mm af-d f2 lens and WOW this lens has a beautiful color rendition and I can use this lens on Nikon FA body with manual focus, the 50mm 1.8d is not usable with manual focus because of a thight focus ring and because I dont like to have alot of gear I bought the 50mm af-d 1.4. The same build quality as the 35mm af-d and same color rendition and is sharper than the 1.8d and I can use it with my Nikon FA. At 1.4 it is soft but sharp from f2 on. The 1.8d I have to stop down to f2.8 to get sharp image. Now I have to sell my 50mm 1.8d...

As I've said in the past, I must have an exceptional copy of the Voigt 58 (with the 58 filter). The second one I bought was not as sharp at all (the 52 filter design, no idea if the new design played any role) to the point that I returned it. Because in my tests, the sharpness (at f/4) of my copy was a hair below the Zeiss 50/1.4 and equal to Zeiss 50/2.0. So I doubt it's less sharp than the Nikon 58. Who shoots at 1.4 anyway... I still have those test raw files. As far as the 24 1.8 it's crazy sharp and well corrected, very nice, but the Zeiss 25/2.0 (not the 2.8 which renders boring) is in a different much higher world in dimensional rendering, no comparison. Of the 50s I liked the Nikon 1.8D.

Actually, the 50 1.4 doesn't have composite elements, the 1.8 does though. The 50 1.4 also has a true ring SWM. Depending on the type of chisel, a wood worker's chisel is probably sharper then most straight razors.

In one of his later videos, he does recommend the D-version of the 85mm 1.4, and the G-series 85mm 1.8. He highly recommends the D-version or non-D version of the 105mm f/2 DC (defocus control) lens. Or, you may want to look at getting the 180mm 2.8D--another lens recommended by Ken. With the longer focal length lens, background clutter is reduced.

Love the video - Funny, out of all the Nikon f/1.4 primes, the one I love is one you hate. The 28/1.4E. I believe it's the best Nikon 1.4 prime I've used. Sony FE primes ruined me - really, they ruined Nikon, and it screams how bad Nikon F mount primes really are. I'm not a sharpness freak, but good lord, Nikon has been awful in this department. 24/1.4G - Sucks. Slow crappy AF. Rendering was decent. Sharpness was meh. 28/1.4E - Awesome. Love the rendering. The sharpness is more than decent. AF is quicker than I ever thought it would be. Literally the best AF-S prime I've used from Nikon. 35/1.4G - Meh. Decent AF. Sharpness? Average. After a year of use, it started sticking, and wouldn't AF properly. So really, it sucked. Sony's 35/1.4 FE is fantastically better than Nikon's. It's not even close. 50/1.4G - Sucks. Soft. Slow. Just shit in every way. Nikon should be embarrassed they even released this lens, much less the fact they charge $450 for this POS. 58/1.4G - Soft. renders beautiful bokeh, but...soft. AF. Slow. soft. you decide. 85/1.4G - Sucks. Slow as shit. But yay. It's contrasty and the bokeh is creamy. It's nano-coated to hell and back. 105/1.4 - Never used it, can't comment. I will say one thing - it's freaking huge... Thank GOD For the Nikon Z mount, so Nikon can start over from scratch. And when you hear people commenting/raving how amazing the Z primes are, it just illustrates how shitty Nikon primes truly have been (save for the 85mm f/1.8G and the 28mm f/1.4E. -- the two standout lenses in Nikon's prime line-up).

The Canon 50mm f1.4 is also underwhelming. For most things I prefer the 50mm f1.8 STM to that lens. Your reviews are helpful, since I also use Nikon equipment. For wide lenses, I like the old D series a lot, since you can live without stabilization with wide lenses and I shoot from a tripod quite a bit. I even like some of the old auto lenses that are manual focus. The new stuff is sharper and technically better, but look at portraits side by side, and the "old-timey" look of the ancient glass has a certain something. Does your page have an easy way to list photographic content only? BTW, your video on lens cleaning was the best one I ever saw on that subject.

You are failing to remember that the 24 f/1.4 has been around for a lot longer than the 1.8 version. I have the 24 f/1.4 and it is far and away my most used and most favored lens + focal length. If the f/1.8 versions had been around when I got that lens, well, then we'd have something to talk about. When Nikon started unveiling these made in China f/1.8s, I did consider selling off all my kit ... I could seriously sell two lenses and that would fund the entire 1.8 lineup. Yes, they are lighter weight. Yes, very nice optically. But give up my big guns? NEVER. I did pick up the 20 f/1.8 because it got such great reviews. Also I got it to console myself when I sold my 14-24 f/2.8. But it does feel like it would shatter into a million shards if I dropped it. On the other hand, I could use my 24 as a weapon.

My kit is an even mix of G and D. I have a thing for the D series, but my older lenses are my G series: 24, 50, 85, 105 micro. D series: 135, 35, 200 micro, 60 micro. The 20 f/1.8G. Then of course that big zoom: 200-500. In order of purchase: 105 f/2.8G micro--the lone survivor of my DX kit, 50 f/1.4G purchased to prevent me from getting the 24-70 f/2.8G, but then I ended up getting it anyway to complete the trinity. 24 f/1.4G purchased shortly after it was introduced, thus spelling doom for my trinity, all gone now; 85 f/1.4G. And for a while, that was it. I lugged around a D700, the 24, 50 and 85. Left the 105 at home. Then let's see. I got a Df (oh, I sold that a few months ago) and got the 60D with a rubber hood because, AQUARIUMS. Then I sold my 24-70 to buy the 135 DC. Then I sold my 14-24 to put money toward a D5. Then I missed it so I got the 20 f/1.8. Then I got the D5. Then I got the 200-500. Then I got the 200 micro, which has been on my wishlist for about 100 years. D700 still with me. Not worth it to sell. I call it my legend camera. Heh. AND THEN: angst over 35... I should get the 1.8, but I have a 1.4 lineup, in the end, the D won. So gosh darn cute and so light, and frankly, I dig the colors from it.

And also my 35 and my 60 D series have character. I picked up the 60 on eBay, so uninterested was I in that macro length. But then I found myself in aquariums googling on my phone, "what's the best focal length for aquariums?" I think I paid $230 for it. Of course the 35 D was also a cheapie. Looks like a pimple on the D5.

Ken is absolutely correct about the 50 1.4 lenses... they all shoot soft compared to the 1.8 models... both G and D series.

Sucks you don’t like the new nikon cameras because I want to know what are the best old lenses to adapt to a z7ii and nobody else has all the lenses you do! No that video can never be made. :/

You don't have any money Ken cos you have it all spent on lenses, camera bodies & lighting! 😂 If you sold them all you be a millionaire 🤤

I say get the 28/1.4E, and skip the 24/1.4 and the 35/1.4.

Lol, I LURVE the 50 mm 1.4 lens for its price. Great portrait lens on DX.
